View Full Version : Who Should Be A Preseason All-American?

Mr. C
May 20th, 2007, 08:00 PM
The College Sporting News is beginning to put together things for its 2007 preview magazine, which will include a preseason, three-team All-American squad. You at AGS can help us in our decision-making for determining those 75 players by giving us feedback on who you think should be on the squad from your team, your conference, or other teams and other conferences. But don't just give us names/nominations. Tell us why you think these players belong.

Tom Zetts.
He will be a 4 year starter at qb for YSU and will be a team captain. He has a 3.9 GPA and does quite a bit of community service for those in Youngstown.

He exemplifies what a 'student-athlete' should be. O ya; he isn't too bad at QB either. Just ask the JMU Fans!

Herd Donaldson, I don't have his stats in front of me, but was solid the entire season, I'm pretty sure he ran for at least 1,500 yards and this will only be his junior year.

While Zetts is one of the biggest strengths returning to the YSU team, I'm not sure he will even be first-team QB in the Gateway. Eric Sanders of UNI is also a four-year starter and a great leader and Luke Drone of ISU is a three-year starter, who has been pretty effective. Why would you take Zetts over either of these guys?

Richardson and Donaldson are definitely among the top RBs to be considered. I wouldn't be surprised if Richardson is a Payton Award finalist this season.

Cory Giddings cornerback from Stonybrook. 2006 NEC Defensive Rookie of the Year Scored two TD's on fumble recoveries in the Albany Game and a returned a 3rd - that was a NCAA DIV 1 record. Had 39 tackles during the season (21 solo) plus a blocked field goal. Cory is always in the game.

From the SLC...

DE Byran Smith, McNeese State.
KR Steven Whitehead, McNeese State
TE Blake Martin, Sam Houston State

Both the Cowboys received All-American nods from various folks last year. There's no more versatile offensive threat in FCS like Whitehead, who was SLC POTY last year. Defensively, Byran Smith is a force to be reckoned with - 13.5 sacks last year, the reigning defensive player of the year in conference.

Blake Martin is one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the nation. Led the Kats in pass receptions last year and was a 1st team All-SLC pick last year. Should be a major threat of Rhett Bomar's this year. I expect him to get a few preseason All-American mentions.

Why do you think Tolbert is an All-American? Make your case for him.

Two of the top fullbacks and 2006 preseason All-Americans in FCS return this season, Jerome Felton of Furman and Broderick Coles of Nicholls State. Joe Casey of Rhode Island is another good one who comes to mind. Competition will be tough here.

OC Stephen Field, Cal Poly (Jr 6-1 280) is a two time All-GWFC center and one of the best OL in the FCS. No stats for the OL, but he dominates.

I know that there are a lot of great guys at fullback - that's what makes all-american lists so tough. But my case for Tolbert ...

He is big and fast, hits like a brick wall but is also agile. He runs straight ahead but can cut, blocks well, and is also a pretty good receiver. He is truly a multiple threat.

He was the 4th leading scorer, 3rd leading rusher, and 7th leading receiver for a Coastal offense that was primarily pass first.

With Aundres Perkins and Tyler Thigpen graduating I think you'll see Tolbert used much more this year.

Tony LeZotte, FS

I don't know how many top RB's have graduatued (I know of Whitlock and Baylark), but maybe Eugene Holloman could be on there. He's definitely not a player that will fit any offense though, just that he'll probably carry for a huge bulk of the -already run-heavy offense- rushing yards of the Dukes' squad.

There really cant be any choice for 1st Team QB other then Ricky Santos.

He's going to finish up 2007 as one of the top 3 QBs all time in FCS statistically and an argument might be able to be made as the best all time in FCS. Hes the reigning Payton winner after finishing a very close second in 2005 and finishing 9th as a Freshman.

Hes arguably the front runner for the 2007 Payton award as well.

Has anyone every finished in the top 10 all 4 seasons of their career?

Good question on the Payton, Travis. Vote totals for previous years are sometimes hard to come by, but my hunch would be Adrian Peterson of Georgia Southern probably had the highest four-year finishes of ANY player in FCS history.

No question in my mind that Santos is an All-American. After that is where the debating begins.

Well I was careful to insert the word statistically...

Among the records he has a decent chance at before 2007 is over are...

Most Offensive Plays Career
Most Yards Gained Career
Seasons Gaining 3000 Yards (Would tie Steve McNair)
Seasons Gaining 2500 Yards (Would tie Many)
Most Yards Gained by Freshman Game (Already Holds)
Most Yards Gained by Freshman Season (Already Holds)
Most Games Gaining 300 Yards Career
Most Games Gaining 400 Yards Career
Most Touchdowns Career
Passes Attempted Career
Passes Completed Career
Highest % Passes Completed Game (20-29 Attempts) (Already Holds Record 96.2%)
Highest % Passes Completed Career Atleast 700 att. (Currently tied with Dave Dickerson at 67.3% Pending Senior Season)
Most Touchdown Passes Career
Most Touchdown Passes Freshman (Holds Record)

Thats some of them. :p

Tell me more about Fitzpatrick. I had already had another prominent person I respect mention him as one of the top TEs. I saw NAU play a couple of times last year, but don't really remember much about him.

I think Watson is one of the top handful of WRs in FCS. He is a player that can dominate games (just ask Arizona).

Two names that I'll be supporting for All-American status (in addition to the three SLC guys I mentioned earlier - Byran Smith and Steven Whitehead of McN and Blake Martin of SHSU)...I'll have more as I research it up! ;)

DT Rio Stotler, Weber St, Jr. Last year, he was an All-Big Sky conference 1st teamer while racking up 41 tackles, 14 unassisted with 7 TFL and 5.5 QB sacks. He seemed to catch steam at the end of the season, when he posted a nine tackle (seven UA) game complete with three QB sacks and a FF in the season finale. Perhaps someone up for 2nd or 3rd team consideration?

RB Herb Donaldson, Western Illinois, Jr - 9th leading rusher last year, was second in the Gateway in his first go as a starter (144.6 ypg). Was able to move the ball forward, only losing 20 yards in carries in over 220 carries. Now, that's impressive! 18 scores last year. Seems to have all the potential in being a top back in FCS. 1st or 2nd team without question.

There are 3 QB's in the CAA alone who had comparable stats to Santos last year. It will be interesting to see the #'s put up by Santos, Schaefer, Flacco and Coen next season. I personally wouldn't mind having Edwards over Santos, maybe that's just me. Too bad many people who decide these teams take your view of using career stats, instead of just a single season.

I think Corey Lewis, RB for UNI will be in the mix at the end of the season.

As a sophmore Corey had 99 yards per game in his 9 games.

Our other back (Darian Williams) averaged 59 a game.

Second team All-Big Sky, started 7 games, played in 9. Had 20 catches for 229 yards, 1 TD. Was mainly a recieving TE.
6'2", 240 pounds.

He is Ryan Fitzpatrick's (Harvard QB) brother. Was recruited by Harvard, Northwestern, Villanova, etc.

Shaun Fitzpatrick was 1st team All BSC

I also wouldn't count out the return of DE Blair Boynton as well as WR Skyler Moore and OL Kevin Meager

Here are some names nobody has mentioned and might get overlooked, however, they deserve mention!

DE Rudolph Hardie, Howard, Sr.- All-American, All-MEAC last year
DE/DT Mark Huygens, UNI, Jr.- 2nd team All-Gateway last year
FS Chris Parsons, UNI, Sr.- 6 INTs, 2nd team All-Gateway last year
DT Mychal Savage, YSU, Jr.- monster DT, all-gateway last two years i believe
P Chris MacDonald, Texas State, Sr.- will play in the NFL, big, strong leg, all-southland last season
TE Kyle Link, McNeese State, Jr.- big, athletic... sleeper for all-america honors
OT Brock Pasteur, SFA, Sr.- athletic, big, 2nd team all-southland last season..named one of 10 strongest players in NCAA by ESPN a couple years back
C John Reese, Lehigh, Sr.- all-patriot league last season
OT Demetrius Bell, NW State, Sr.- sleeper, was not even all-southland this past year.. nobody knows who he is...NFL does and the SLC coaches do.. he was a year away last season and while he might not end up a postseason all-american he is an NFL prospect... could be this year's version of jacob bender to go late rounds and still no media attention.

Kevin Richardson, his performance last year says it all
Along with his sophmore season, as well.

2006 preseason there were many doubters on AGS. When I suggested that he were "AA" caliber. I was met with there are many other "proven" on "other" teams. Based on his career and playoff performances against the best competition in the FCS, I certainly think he is now is "proven" as anyone at the FCS level. So, AGSers KEVIN RICHARDSON is your 1st team 2007 FCS All-American. xthumbsupx

Witness Foster's 2006 season. xeekx

I do think that he deserves preseason consideration as a return specialist. He didn't stand out statistically last season, but he deserves some recognition for his talent, and he's not likely to put up the receiving, rushing, or passing numbers to get him on the list.

There's probably not a better all-purpose player in the country, and probaby no one better at breaking big plays in the return game.

HAHA, Zetts did well, yes, but to give him all the credit for YSU barely winning that game is a little strong. I give more credit to your offensive coordinator and our defensive coordinator (for sucking). I was there, our entire game plan focused on stopping your running game, which we did. You coaches adapted your plays, we didn't. Any decent quarterback could have done what Zetts did. Not taking anything away from his game and its good to hear he's a great guy, but don't use that game as the singular reason why he should get into the top 75...

Tony LeZotte FS

If LeZotte doesn't make it in I'll be very disappointed. He's been making great plays since his freshman year. He's ridiculous. Plus the fact that he had groin (?) surgery in December and in a recent interview he said he recovered quickly and is playing better than ever. Look for him to explode this year. He's really the only one on JMU's team that I would give preseason honors to. I could point out some others that could break out, but they still need to prove they can step up.

In all fairness to Zetts, he played a great game against JMU, the best of his career thus far, and completed a bunch of clutch passes under the pressure of the playoffs to lead YSU past the Dukes. It was probably the best game of the playoffs from a an aestetic viewpoint (particularly if you didn't have a dog in the fight).

That being said, I see Zetts as being a very good QB, but not an All-American.

Two players from Cal Poly who probably wont be on any preseason All-American teams but have a great shot at being on a few post season All-American teams are Sophomore DE/LB Ryan Shotwell (brother of 2006 Buchanan winner Kyle Shotwell) and Jr Rover Mark Restelli.

Shotwell had an outstanding Freshman season in 2006 recording 51 tackles, 7 sacks and 10 QBH. He is switching from DE to a rush LB spot in 2007 and I think his numbers should jump considerably.

Restelli had an outstanding Freshman season in 2005 where he had 83 tackles, 1 INT and 3 PBU. In 2006 Restelli playing time was reduced due to injury but he still recorded 57 tackles, 1 INT, 9 PBU, 2.5 sacks and 5 QBH. If he stays healthy in 2007 he should have a monster season.

Senior LB Mike Gallhiugh, Colgate

I think a good case could be made for Lehigh QB Sedale Threatt as well. 1 1/2 year starter, 61% pass efficiency, 300 yards rushing, 2,000 yards passing, 14/5, 144 passing rating... No doubt his record versus Lafayette hurts him, but statistically, I put him up against an awful lot of QBs.

Other names I would put for consideration are:

Junior RB Jordan Scott, Colgate
Senior T Jesse Padilla, Lafayette
Senior DT Kyle Sprenkle, Lafayette
Senior WR Ryan Maher, Holy Cross
Senior DB Andrew Berry, Harvard
Senior DL Naheem Harris, Penn
Senior RB Luke Siwula, Cornell

Ingle Martin stood 6'3, weighed 225 lbs, broke nearly every Furman and many SoCon passing records, ran in the 4.5 range, and played for the top football program in the BCS (UF). He got drafted in the 5th.

Johnson might be a phenomenal talent, but to call him a quarterback going in the first three is probably a good deal presumptious. Especially when he hasn't seen the calibre defenses that the other big name FCS quarterbacks (Swogger, Meyer, Martin, Rascati, Williams, Thigpen, etc.) saw on a weekly basis.

True that he isn't going against top calibre talent, but then again you can make the arguement that he isn't playing with the best calibre players either. Those other QBs had, according to many here, top calibre receivers, linemen, running backs, and tight ends. Would Troy Aikmen have been so successful in Dallas without all the talent that surrounded him, I think not. Some QBs look better than thye are by virtue of the talent that surrounds them. Josh Johnson is doing what he does with good players, but not top calibre players.

Martin was a starter at UF before Zook gave way to the hype and supplanted Martin in favor of Chris Leak.

Martin's short tenure at UF was a case of bad timing and it certainly was to FU's benefit.

Rhetorical question: How good would Martin have been in Meyer's offense at UF with the talent that group had?

I think he would have done well. Meyer likes bigger mobile quarterbacks out of the shotgun like Tim Tebow and Alex Smith. Martin's physical abilities were top notch. Furman fans would probably have rather seen him tuck the ball and run more often a la Meyer's offense. In most games FU played with him at the helm Martin was the biggest, fastest, strongest player on the field.

In the two years I watched him, only twice did a team have a gameplan to efficiently slow him down, Western Carolina and the Citadel in '05.

You can call it presumptious, if you like. But that is EXACTLY where a lot of NFL scouts are projecting Josh Johnson right now. For the skeptics out there, I have to ask, have you seen this kid play? I've seen him several times and I believe he is the REAL DEAL.

There have been a ton of running backs and quarterbacks mentioned, but keep in mind that there will be THREE RBs and THREE QBs named. That is it. We distinguish by position and we pick the top three fullbacks and the top three tailbacks, or whatever you want to call their position in their particular offenses. Those are probably the most competitive positions to make it from.

PaladinFan
May 25th, 2007, 01:38 AM
I can't imagine one game that Furman played where Martin was the fastest, strongest, or biggest player on the field.

I watched him play every game. He was, in many cases, the best athlete of the 22 standing on the field. Yes, there were those that were faster, stronger, or bigger. However, I did not witness one single player that combined all of those traits into one athlete. He was as fast as the defensive backs, tall as the recievers, and big as the linebackers.

There were several games where he ran an option keeper around the end and completely outran every defensive player on the field. I saw him in 2005 completely pick up and throw a GSU saftey off of him and throw for a big gain. He made Furman a completely different team. You could make an argument that Furman was one play away in '04 and one in '05 from being in back to back NC games. We road Ingle Martin the whole way.

Again, I'm not talking about wins and losses or statistics, but in terms of pure athletic ability I didn't see anyone that encapsulated what Martin brought to the table.

Martin didn't do too bad in the wins and losses department either.

One thing that people forget is that Furman was perhaps one or two plays from advancing to the 2005 championship game and was in a similar position to beat the eventual champion in the 2004 quarterfinals. Martin could have EASILY left Furman with two I-AA championship rings. It took the national champs to knock the Paladins out both years.

So, Mr. C, who would be your choice for these two positions (QB and RB) at this point? xsmiley_wix

Grambling's WR Clyde Edwards who lead the team in receptions as a true freshman, finished second as a sophomore, and led the team in receptions as a junior. A really good receiver who combines good route running with great hands/concentration and deep strike ability.

It would be hard to not go with Ricky Santos and Josh Johnson at QB. The third QB is tough. There are a lot of great candidates. Kevin Richardson pushed himself to the head of the class with his MVP performance in the playoffs last year at RB. I've also been a big Lex Hilliard fan over his years at Montana. After that, it's a logjam at RB, too.

What about Steve Walker from NDSU for the third QB?

I happened to see Steve Walker's very first game as a freshman. Here is my scouting report on Walker:

He is a tremendous leader and a great playmaker. He is good at getting out of the pocket and throwing on the run. He can scramble and run, if necessary, making him a good run-pass QB. The downside is Walker doesn't have tremendous arm strength. He has great touch, but his arm strength isn't as good as most of the top caliber FCS QBs. Guys like Ricky Santos, Josh Johnson, Luke Drone, Sean Schaefer and Rhett Boomar have much better arm strength. He reminds me most of Eric Sanders of Northern Iowa, another kid that gets the most out of his talent. My feeling is that Walker is among the top 10 QBs in FCS, but not quite an All-American.

Lex Hilliard is pretty much a no brainer. The only thing you worry about with Hilliard is how he comes back from the Achilles tendon surgery and I hear he is doing fine.

Just some WCU honorable mentions

Some of the top returners are

DB Carlton Bailey
WR Michael Hines
WR Eddie Cohen
RS Mike Malone
DT John Martin (yeah he is coming back)
LB Kadeem Morgan
PK Jonathan Parsons

Due to last years record I know these guys probably don't make the cut but could be in the mix at the end of the season.

Kick returner Mike Malone is probably the WCU player with the best chance to be an All-American.

Keep those names coming.

Delaware has had some pretty impressive running backs in their 100+ year history of mostly run-oriented, Wing-T football. Several UD backs have had single game performances where they have rushed for 4 TDs. Some of the best have even accomplished this feat on more than one occasion. But there is only one back in UD's long history that has rushed for 4 TD's in a single game on 3 separate occasions and he has done so once in each of his first 3 seasons. That man is Omar Cuff.

He is back from injury and says he feels better than ever. Look for Omar to keep the string alive with another 4 rushing TD performance this year. Hopefully several! He is a special player to watch.

A UD player who will not be on anyone's preseason AA list, but may be there at the end is TE Rob Agnone. He was hidden behind Ben Patrick last season, but is a big TE (taller than Patrick at 6'6") with good hands. He should play an important role in UD's offense for 2007.

Mr. C

Omar Cuff is definitely the short list of RBs to consider for All-American status. Thanks for the heads up on TE Rob Agnone as well. That is exactly the type of information that is tremendously valuable on AGS.
