I wonder what the "vulgar" signs contained? Hard to decide if this is justified or an overreaction without knowing that.

sounds like there has been extended ongoing drama between the players, coaches, and administration in that program, and the "vulgar signs" may have just been used as a "last straw".

"cancelling the volleyball season" equating to cancelling the final weekend (2 matches) of competition. Though it may have had an impact in the conference standings (Penn wasn't in contention for postseason play, but one of the teams that Penn was scheduled to play in that final weekend was in contention)

I generally think that statements like Penn made are stupid and counterproductive.

If you are going to insinuate that your players are doing horrible things, then they deserve the right to protect their reputations.

If you want discretion, just call it a "violation of team rules." Once you describe things as vulgar, you really need to provide information. Sometimes, readers will imagine far more vulgar things than were actually present.

This is nothing compared to what Harvard had gone through with their soccer and CC programs several years ago. Men's teams in those sports were making vulgar comments about their women's counterparts. I do not know if it is fully resolved by now.
