For those from afar, not really familiar with south Louisiana football, Southeastern vs Nicholls is a REAL rivalry that draws well every year, and gets the attention of New Orleans and Baton Rouge media, regardless of records. The schools are 78 miles apart, share the same recruiting territory, and many families in the area have both SLU and Nicholls grads. This will be the first time since the two schools began playing in 1972, that both schools have a conference championship at stake. We anticipate a packed house and raucous environment in Strawberry Stadium. This is a great match up for south Louisiana and FCS football in our state. Get their early.

Rivalries are always exponentially better when both teams are good. Hope there is a sellout and lots of great tailgating. If I wasn't going to be out of town next weekend, I would have seriously considered road-tripping to this game. Good luck to both teams, but I think the Lions have a better shot at actually making noise in the playoffs. For that reason, I will be rooting for them to win.

Yeah, try as I might, I can't really ever hate on SLU. I have a long history of family that attended that university. So, I'll be rooting for my alma mater Thursday, but if SLU takes it, after I stew for a week, I'll be warm to them representing the conference in the playoffs.

That’s what makes this rivalry the best of all the in-state ones we play. So close together that families and friends are inner twined between the two. Not to mention recruiting against each other so geographically close. Another thing that makes it great is that each fan base is able to travel well, so good numbers in the stands for both sides. If there was one drawback at all it would be the Thursday night game. But really, I think Thursday evening is better for the student section here in Hammond. Going to be a good one....I hope....

Went with the homer pick again. With the emergence of the passing game, I think Nicholls can score enough to get it done.
Colonels are 3-0 in the Southland with 5 Dixon in the lineup. He had 140 receiving in the first half against UCA before he was injured, then went for 185 yards last week against McNeese.
Me and and my nephew will be there. Geaux Colonels!

The key for you guys is how well will your passing game stack up against a very stout and fast defensive front? IF you can handle that you may be ok, but pass rushing has been a weakness for your guys. SLU ended up playing very well defensively upfront, just as SHSU did. That was one area they really surprised me the most.

Big 4th down stop for Nicholls. Although calling it a "stop" is a bit misleading since SLU's QB missed a WR for a TD that had about 2 steps on his defenders on 4th down. Nicholls with the ball around midfield with 4 minutes left still tied at 21. Neither coach seems to have much confidence in his kicker.

If Nicholls can drive and score here start up the second guessing on SLU's play calling on that drive to throw to the endzone from inside the Nicholls 20 with around 2 minutes left, a running clock, and Nicholls having only one remaining TO.
I guess if the kicker can't make an XP you can't trust him to make a game winning FG either.

We went over the 10k mark in attendance for the first time since the return of football in '03, and fans got their money's worth, and then some. I didn't personally hear anything from my perch in the stadium but from what I gather there were things said on both sides. I heard there were some pretty nasty comments hurled at our players as well. It's a rivalry (a real one), there were 10k packed in close quarters and it's south Louisiana. Congrats to both Nicholls and SLU for a great game and great seasons! Hoping both get to represent the Southland well in the playoffs.
I'm curious now how the committee will compare SLU at 7-4 against other bubble teams. Due to the hurricane cancellation with Bethune-Cookman, SLU did not get the chance to play a 12 game schedule. Does the committee give them some extra wiggle room because they did not get to play a game they would have been favored to win? That could give them a slight edge against other 7-win bubble teams.

We're not totally sure either but supposedly they stopped it one time for a helmet coming off, but we definitely got the benefit of four timeouts. Had we gotten a safety, I'm sure all hell would have broken loose.

Has anyone explained what all those timeouts were towards the end of the game? Seemed like they were materializing out of thin air.

I would assume that in the case of a helmet coming off (when not ruled to be caused by a foul) the clock should stop temporarily but then start on the ready for play by the official.
I'm not sure how accurate this rules document is from "College Football Officiating, LLC" dated 9/1/2017 but they seem to indicate that's what should've happened. They even say a 10 second runoff should happen in a scenario where "the game clock is running and the only reason it is stopped is due to a player's helmet coming off".

At $60 a year, ESPN + is worth it
Agree. I don't mind ponying up to be able to watch most all FCS games I care about.

Lionsking, I know that game didn't turn out like you wanted but it was highly entertaining, really and all timer
Hoping SE LA gets the playoff bid because I would like to see you play again....
nice crowds shots to but I didn't notice anyone that looks like me...

Thanks CH. From purely an entertainment perspective, not sure we'll be involved in another one like last night for a long time. The atmosphere in the stadium was as electric as I've seen at an FCS game. The loss sucked but it'll be talked about and debated in these parts for many years to come.
As for the playoffs, I think we're one of the best 14 options for at-large consideration, and capable of doing damage if we get in. We'll see how it unfolds.

Apparently Nicholls had a helmet come off after each play. The clock stops. We got the option to take a 10-second runoff or stop the clock. We chose to stop the clock. The rule is weird, and doesn't make sense, but the officials were correct by rule. They did a poor job explaining it to the crowd, however.

Take the joke credit and run with it. Just don't try to extend beyond the goal line. Ok I'll stop.
I'm actually about to go hang out with some SELU grads and trying to remember that I'm actually an adult and not supposed to troll other 30somethings.

Make that 4-0. Crazy last few minutes and I may have had a heart attack or two. Hopefully we’ll be in Guidry next weekend.

Great player, definitely impacted the game. Didn't help matters that both of our starting corners were out, but not sure it made a big difference who lined up across him last night. Pretty sure you guys will get a home game, if not the eight seed.
