For the third consecutive year, Sam Houston State has won the Southland Conference Commissioners Cup for all-around athletic department performance.

Additionally, Sam Houston State, for the second time in school history has won the All-Mens Trophy for all-around mens' sports performance. The last time the athletic department won this honor was 1999.

Sam Houston State's athletic year was highlighted by winning conference championships in womens' indoor track and field and womens' golf. Sam Houston State also won the 2007 Southland Conference softball tournament as the softball team advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time in school history.

Sam Houston State is also the leader in academics in the Southland, having the highest athletic department GPA, which comes without having a 'General Studies' degree like many of the major institutions in collegiate athletics.

Congrats Sam Houston State student-athletes! It sure is a great day to be a Bearkat! xthumbsupx

Nobody cares.

SHSU cares. This was the goal of the athletic department, particularly the athletic director for some time. For years, it seemed like a pipe dream that could not become true and yet, for three years running, the Bearkat athletic department has done it.

It's a sign that things have gone well. Whether it was volleyball stepping up a few years ago or the emergence of the womens' tennis team, it seems to have galvanized our athletic department. Softball is back (and should be near the top of the conference for years to come) and baseball has got back on the winning track.

It takes a department to win and having the top academic institution as it relates to the success of students-athletes in the classroom makes it all the better.

Release from SHSU on winning the Commish Cup...

The Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup has been awarded annually each year since 1997-98. Texas State-San Marcos and Sam Houston State have each won back-to-back cups, the Bobcats in 2004 and 2005 (tying that year with SHSU) and the Bearkats in 2005 and 2006. No previous program has achieved a "three-peat."

Congrats! xthumbsupx

Western Kentucky finished 2nd for Vic Bubas Cup, an equivalent of all-around sports program. WKU won the cup last year.
