NEW YORK -- Mets prospect Lastings Milledge is in trouble with the team once again, this time for making a rap CD that uses foul and offensive language.

The song, "Bend Ya Knees" was on the Web site www.souljaboirecords.com, the record label the 22-year-old outfielder founded. Milledge can be heard using a racist term for blacks and language derogatory to women.

"We don't approve of the lyrics," New York general manager Omar Minaya said Wednesday.

The Met's have to be the dumbest mofo's on the planet. xlolx
Riding the "Get Rap" bullshat, they just assured a song and group that NOBODY heard of nationwide sucess.

Oh well............... Guess those 2 guy's with him will send the Met's a thank you card.xlolx
They bout to get paid. xlolx

Oh yeah.............I guess they still playing rap, PLAYER REQUEST, as they come up to the plate to hit .................. Hypocrit's. xlolx

The radio play clean versions also.xnodx

They want all versions cut out if the implication is there when talking bout "rappers" only.
It's their fault according to all the hypocrit's pushing this mess. xlolx
And that includes the words that came out of IMUS mouth. xlolx

If you gonna ban or censor something, you can't pick this and leave that.
I'm sure this guy's song would have been cleaned up for radio just like everybody else's.

Hell..................NOBODY even knew about it.xlolx

But I think this is more serious than jumping on the BAD RAPPER bandwagon.
An obscure rap song and rappers is just what the Met's need to be worried about. xrolleyesx
If anything is front page for the Met's organization, it should have been this. xrolleyesx

Even as the Mets furrowed their collective brow at Milledge's behavior, however, they were demonstrating a bit of hip-hop-crisy. Milledge's song may be a misogynist's fantasy, but it wasn't even the biggest, baddest story of the day at Shea because yet another Mets minor leaguer had tested positive for steroids.

Reliever Lino Urdaneta, who had been demoted on Tuesday, was the culprit this time and received a 50-game suspension by Major League Baseball. A week earlier, Jorge Reyes was suspended for 100 games for his second offense. A month ago, former clubhouse assistant Kirk Radomski pleaded guilty to distributing performance-enhancing drugs to players.

The fact is that these days a team has to think about the financial impact of their player's behavior. Advertisers have demonstrated that they will pull support if enough fans/people are offended and threaten to stop purchasing their products.

Like it or not, money talks. Player's off field behavior can impact the team's bottom line. If the players do not want to recognize that fact, then they can just walk away from the league.

As far as what the Mets should worry about, they should address about BOTH issues.

It is interesting when people say that people should ignore their indiscretion and worry about something "bigger".

"Hey, I only slapped Judy. What you should be paying attention to is that Fred is punching Jon." Yeah, as if that were a rational answer. xrolleyesx

Okay. Well it's not like the Mets came out and announced this first. Surely the media got a hold of it and then the Mets found out. Milledge is co-owner of a record company with one of his good friends who is an "up and coming" rapper. Milledge (L Millz) has a few lyrics in one song (I don't know what he actually says) but the song is disparaging to women on many levels (shocker!).

So put yourself in the Mets Front Office shoes for a while. What are you going to do when one of your employees, a high level prospect no less, helps create a song that says many things of the same things and much worse things than Imus got fired over?

They have to come out and denounce it. They have no other choice. All of you that are saying the Mets are hypocrites are a little off base, although I can understand where you are coming from. The Mets play *clean* radio edits of rap songs for about 3 seconds while a better walks to the batters box. So does every other team in baseball.

The Mets aren't coming out and saying, "We are Against Rap Music". They are saying "We are against ALL music with lyrics such as these". Yes, it happens to be a rap song in this case, but what if David Wright came out with a metal song with equally disparaging lyrics? The Mets would play this the same way. I'm pretty sure the Sixers did the same when Iverson came out with his album. Did the Sixers still play rap music after that? How many of you were calling them hypocrites then?

Milledge has been a MAJOR disappointment. He hasn't figured out that talent alone won't make for a successful career. He hasn't learned what type of work ethic it takes to make the most of his talent. Can't see that this Rap Crap is helping him work on his baseball.

whitey
May 18th, 2007, 09:15 AM
Mr. C,

Milledge (aka L Millz) has certainly been a MAJOR disappointment off the field. But it's way too early to carry that label over to his baseball career. He is only 22 years old. And currently on the DL in AAA. If he wasn't on the DL he would have been the call up and not Gomez when Alou went down.

This guy is just killing the Mets though with all of this crap. The Mets have 3 big time OF prospects (Milledge, Gomez and Martinez) + Beltran for another 4 years at least. That means one of them is expendable and this is just killing his trade value. Something the Mets might desperately need at the trade deadline or in the off season to upgrade at a position of need.

Mr. C
May 18th, 2007, 09:20 AM
The Mets have been major disappointed in his work ethic and his off-field demeanor. From what I've heard they are ACTIVELY shopping him around. Of course no one else particularly wants to deal with this head case's problems. On the other hand, I hear great things about Gomez.

True. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Milledge moved before the deadline or in the offseason. Gomez looks to be very good, but the crazy thing is he isn't even the top OF prospect in the Mets system right now. That honor belongs to Fernando Martinez, 18 years old and the youngest player in all of AA.

still gotta have skills, ask Scott Podsednik

True. So far he is 5/12, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 SB with the Mets this season. Way to early to derive anything from that.

In AAA this season: 40/140, 8 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 17 SB, 15 BB.

Last season in AA: .281, 24 2B, 8 3B, 7 HR, 48 RBI, 27 BB, 41 SB. In 430 AB's. He might have a bit of a strikeout problem. So he will need to work on his plate discipline, although he is only 21 years old.

In 2009 when the Mets open Citifield you just might see Beltran flanked by Gomez and Martinez (assuming they trade Milledge).

I should note that all of these outfield prospects for the Mets can play defense with great range and good arms.

Let's review.

The Mets can fire, trade (unless it is not allowed in the player's contract) or "disapprove of the behavior" of anyone on their team.

When a player owns the team, then he can make the decisions about what behavior is acceptable for his players.

As someone already said, if a player came out with a heavy metal CD with a bunch of curse words, the reaction would be the same. Some news guy would find the CD and the media would dig into it the same way they are digging into this story.

But hey, feel free to bithc all you want and twist the story to fit your paranoid view of the world.

Well these 5 second clips they play are from the *clean* radio edit versions, correct? A player in the Mets organization recorded a song with explicit lyrics. I can see a difference here, but I also understand your point of view.

Let me ask you this: If you hold a high profile position within a big Corporation, lets say Microsoft and you come out with a song with explicit lyrics, what do you think Microsoft's reaction is going to be?

I think that issuing a statement saying they disapprove of your actions and your lyrics are well within their rights. I don't think it matters what race this Microsoft employee is of. They would do this no matter what I think.

Edit: Err....Maybe that's not the best hypothetical situation as Microsoft doesn't play 5 second clips of radio-edited songs at Bill Gates press conferences but just go with it.

Kris Benson pitched for the Mets for 2 months + 1 full season before he was traded. The Mets did not put up with him or his wife's antics very long. Actually she (not a typo) was traded shortly after appearing in this Mrs. Clause outfit at a children's charity:

That is clear to anyone who doesn't have an agenda.

Look here young boy- if you want to start some schitt, the PM is wide open and waiting. If not- address your elders when you are addressed, boy.xlolx

I don't have anything hide old man, hence no need for a PM

As Cluck U has so gracefully pointed out, we all know your agenda

Paranoid view of the world.
Do all you mofo's go to the same "catch phrase" party and pick this shat up. xlolx

The MET's organization got 3 players and a clubhouse mgr suspended for more than half a year for drug use and dispensing the last 2 month's alone yet the biggest story is about a damm rap song by a black guy.

You tell me which is worse ................... Byotch all you want from your closed minded world.xlolx

BTW: Nice party ya'll had up there Mr. Delaware. xlolx
And don't act like you don't know either. xlolx

Just so you don't call me Paraniod..........These are your HONOR STUDENTS (http://news.bostonherald.com/national/northeast/view.bg?articleid=1000305)

Steroids are bad. The league dealt with it.

Now, I know it is hard for some people to juggle multiple issues, but it seems a bit limited for even the dullest of minds to put forth an argument that asks people to ignore one person's poor example by saying that there are worse behaviors. xeyebrowx

Interestingly, Roselle issued a condemnation of the behavior displayed at the UD party.

Since the Mets are being criticized for issuing a statement against offensive lyrics, perhaps you are suggesting that Roselle (and you) should have ignored the students’ poor behavior and not said anything?

Scenario in Met's Clubhouse

Exec 1: Oh my word! We have found out that one of our players is doing..."rap music"

Exec 2: This can't be true! Woe is the world that is the Met's organization, whatever shall we do?

Exec 1: I've got it we will publically condemn his music and image while sidestepping the major issues of steroid abuse within our team!

Exec 2: Genius! The white man will reign supreme!!!!

Met's MGNT. xlolx

"What can we do to divert this ROID monkey off our arses...........HUMMMM".
"I got it...............Throw a wannabe rapper under the bus".

This was not, is not, and never was about rap music

It is simply about Milledge's language in his music.

If this was freakin country music and one of their players was cussing up a storm, they would say the same thing.

It is not about the type of music, just the contents of said music.

How many pro athletes have been in movies saying all types of sh%t, but they single this cat out for raping? His lyrics arent doing anything to the Mets's image, that was a poor ass excuse for nothing.

to you
seems pretty much what you should expect from professional sports teams these days, they want to protect themselves and their image, and image is money
