DIVISION I FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP COMMITTEE TO REVEAL TOP TEN
INDIANAPOLIS — The Division I Football Championship Committee will announce a top-10 ranking, Wednesday, November 6, during halftime of the 8 p.m. (ET) Miami (OH) vs. Ohio game on ESPN2.

For the fourth straight year, the sport committee will reveal the rankings ahead of Selection Sunday. The early reveal will provide insight on potential teams competing for top seed positions in the upcoming 2019 Division I Football Championship. In addition to building excitement around the FCS playoffs, the reveal may have some bearing on the final bracket that will be publicized during the selection show on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 12:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU.

Odds on it being a complete disaster?

Any extra exposure is good in my book. I know a Wednesday game isn't true coverage, but I feel like with the championship moving to ABC and gameday in Brookings there is an effort to get more interest in the FCS. I don't know if it will work, and the reasons may be ESPN looking for cheaper games than the FBS, but I hope it will lead to more coverage of this level.

No, I don't think so. The committee does a pretty damn good job and if you step back and look at things and try to do it on your own you see how really tough it is to do what they do. They may miss on one or two according to a lot of us but those are normally toss up type things.

I would make a bet with you, but the results would be too open to interpretation.
I expect at least 3 WTF moments.

There is a concerted effort on the part of the FCS group inside the NCAA to put a real promotional effort behind things this year.

Well I'm not sure what you mean but we can use the AGS Poll as our baseline if you would like to?

On the Top 10? I don't get what you mean I guess. If you mean the whole field and you are talking about 3 in that group I will disagree for sure because as I've said about my thoughts on it for many years now when you are down to the final 3 or 4 picks then it really doesn't matter...it is all mediocrity hoping for a chip and a chair.

I can almost guarantee some if not most on that committee will not do their homework. Perfect example: Kennesaw State

They should be no where near the top 8 but I bet they will be top 4-6 in this ranking.

You know I'm not sure if you realize the amount of work they do on these things. Maybe KSU will be Top 10 but I damn sure would bet they are not around the 4 or 5 mark and probably closer to the area AGS has them in. I could be wrong but based on past efforts and discussions with a couple of former committee members I can tell you they do a pretty fair amount of work on these things.

It's always fashionable to gripe about what they do so I will try and not take that away from you guys.:D

One thing we know is that this is opinions and over time criteria changes with members changing and so on and so forth but overall I think the committee does a very good job even if I disagree with the gravel of the selections at the bottom of the heap. We will see if SOS is a large part as it has been gaining traction for years now and if so then KSU will probably be at the lower end of the seeds if at all. But seriously, I've seen so many times the last couple of weeks the statement "Many after 6 or 7 it is all guessing" and if that is the case then I would not think KSU in that range is some big deal.

Outside of the first year they tried this (which was 2016 I believe) they've actually done a pretty decent job IMO.

You could tell that first year they just threw some names together with not a lot of thought or discussion about it beforehand. I think they learned their lesson.

Unfortunately for me, nearly every time in my lifetime they could make a decision that actually mattered to me it was wrong. xlolx

You can't really compare this to the hockey rankings but Pairwise has been pretty accurate in picking the teams and the regions. A lot less teams to deal with but it seems that the more they do this the better a job that they do.

I'm glad that they are doing this on a Wednesday. I tend to watch MACtion because I'm home, this one in particular since the Ohio Bobcats were the first D1 team I ever saw play in person for Band Day when I was a sophomore when they came to play the Gophers. Saturday's I tend to be at games in person so I would miss the show.

Here was the only pre-bracket release of committee's rankings last year on 10/31: https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?216791-Committee’s-Top-10-(10-31)&highlight=10%2F31+committee+rankings

And here's how their ranking on 10/31 compared to the AGS, STATS, and Coaches polls that were released a couple days earlier on 10/29:

So you can see that they were actually tougher on Kennesaw St at that time last year than all the polls were (including AGS) and their rankings more closely resembled AGS than the other 2 "national" polls. Like I said outside of that first rankings release that first year they did it in 2016 they've done a pretty good job.

If I recall they actually did a pretty good job these last few years. I think it was SHSU that was ranked really high all year with a lighter schedule but the committee had them at like 5-6 in their "first ranking" they released, much to the surprise of many. They had taken into account many factors it appeared.

Yes, that is a great example. The coaches and STATS poll had them 1 o4 2 and we had them 4 or 5 and some SHSU peops were not happy with us for our criteria...and it turned out that the committee used the same glasses we did. As I said it is always easy to be a critic and pretend it is all **** all the time but the job they do is solid.

Not perfect, but very solid...and getting better as you suggested.

You're thinking of 2016. SHSU was #1 in both the STATS and Coaches polls at the time the rankings were released and they actually were at #2 when the committee's first rankings in 2016 came out (you want to see a **** show of a thread check out the one that those rankings spawned: https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?188124-Selection-Committee-s-Top-10-11-3-16).

Then when they released their next set of rankings a week later SHSU moved down to #5 after a pretty dominating win IIRC: https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?188584-11-10-Selection-Committee-Top-10

I think the committee figured out that year that maybe they shouldn't publish their very first draft of the rankings and instead fine tune them privately for a week or two before the first public release.

They mentioned this is 4th year .. if i remember right:

- 1st year they did this for 3 weeks, after games 8,9, 10 maybe
- 2nd year they this for=or 2 weeks, after games 9 and 10, I think
- 3rd year .. I thought they also did it for 2 weeks .. maybe it was just 1 week

This year, they are only doing it for 1 week. Wish they would do this at least for 2 weeks. The reason AGS is the best subjective poll, is because of this forum with all the transparency and debate - the debate comes from doing this every week. That is the same postitive result the FCS committee presumably was going for by publishing their top 10 for 3 straight weeks ... transparency and at least the potential for debate. But now they are doing this once .. once again resorting to easier way out.

The most impactful mistakes are in the top 8 seeds and the bottom 4-6 bubble teams. The middle 8-10 teams are usually pretty easy and their pairing and home/away don't really matter since it is a budgetary based process with their bids, etc ... other than who plays into #1, etc... which I accept is necessary evil .. they have to try to optimize their budget.

So most of their focus should be top 8 seeds (picking most of these teams is usually easy, ranking is much tougher) and then then bubble teams .. the rest is pretty easy by comparison. Last year, I thought they did a bad job with the bubble teams ... which I have documented to death. So I hope they tap into some objective SOS sources ... they should do way better than the Coaches Poll .. that is the usually the worst poll out there.

Just a reminder to all from another thread .. https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?229608-FCS-Playoff-Records-by-Conf-2011-18#post2772950

MVFC playoff record since 2011, including and excluding NDSU ... MVFC excluding NDSU has the highest playoff win% of all conferences at .553. And f I remove the MVFC had to head games (i.e. canninbalizing ourselves), our .553 jumps to .631 .. plain and simple facts since 2011. Like Id did removing NDSU from MVFC ..... If I removed EWU from Big Sky, their playoff record falls to .360 win %. If I remove SHSU from Southland, their playoff record falls to .250 win %. Colonial is about .500 no matter how you slice them .. but since 2011, every time they've gotten 5 or 6 bids, theyve crashed and burned in playoffs. Every time MVFC got 5 teams, we dominated.

At some point, the FCS Selection Committee might want to take that into consideration ... like last year, when three 6-4 teams got into playoffs ... 2 from Southland who 3 teams and crapped bed and 1 from Colonial, who got 6 teams and crapped bed ... while 6-4 ISUb from MVFC stayed home despite having strongest SOS.

Can MVFC get benefit of doubt just once from the committee .. can't ignore our (MVFC excl NDSU) FCS leading .553 win % (.631 win % removing conf head ot head) in playoffs since 2011 forever, can they ???

AGS has 4 Valley teams in the top 8 right now, I highly doubt we get 4 seeds. Expecting 2, would be happy with 3. Except those 3 will probably be 1, 4, and 8 so we're all on the same side.

Why do you think a team should automatically drop because they played another ranked team? I doubt you dropped SDSU last week because NDSU barely beat them. Assuming Weber@Sac this week is close they might swap spots but shouldn't drop much. A lower ranked team getting a close loss to a higher ranked team means your ranking was pretty good. If the Valley has 4 in the top 8 in the last week poll but get 2 seeds, how do you feel about that?

Well, in the case of UNI and ISUr I think it's very likely one of them drops 3-5 spots this week which would put them out of the seeds since neither has any particularly good wins to fall back on. Only way it doesn't happen is if it's very close regulation or OT game especially one that the home team Redbirds win or if the teams near them in the polls like Kennesaw, UCA, Nova, and Montana lose a bunch of games as well.

I'll bet you a dollar there are at least 3 MVFC teams in the top 8 next Wednesday though.

Assuming Weber@Sac this week is close they might swap spots but shouldn't drop much. A lower ranked team getting a close loss to a higher ranked team means your ranking was pretty good. If the Valley has 4 in the top 8 in the last week poll but get 2 seeds, how do you feel about that?I do not think that necessarily but in the case of these two teams being at number 7 and number 8 and just barely hanging into what we would consider to be the seeds then I would assume, depending on the other things around them that they are probably going to have at least the one losing team drop out a little bit based on everything.

but it really doesn't matter what my philosophy on it is because all you have to do is look around here a little bit and you can see what other voters do 218 when they lose and most of the time it is probably the right move. In very rare cases like the NDSU and SDSU game it is probably the right move not to move SDSU down with the exception that they lost a big piece of what made them the number 3 team in the country so a good possibility they should have lost a spot or two but that information may not have been very widely known.

Professor chaos pretty much made the more cogent points or why it is unlikely that the AGS Poll would have had four teams in the top 8 at the point that the selection committee rankings would come out.

I'd feel like the playoff committee corrected the errors in the AGS poll
