Citing the April 16 campus shootings at Virginia Tech that left 32 people and their killer dead, basketball recruit Augustus Gilchrist said he is "not mentally prepared" to honor his letter of intent and will not play for the Hokies next season.
In an interview with The Washington Post, the 6-foot-9 Gilchrist said he informed Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg of his decision shortly after the killings.

Seems kind of odd considering this can happen anywhere.

It sucks that this guy backed out of his commitment. I think the title of this thread, however, could possibly be worded better. It insinuates that there somehow was an upside to this whole thing. A basketball recruit backing out is a minor consequence in the grand scheme of things.

I get what you're saying, but IMO there is an upside. Similar to the 9/11 events, it has brought this community and this country together. This fall, Virginia Tech will be everyone's team on the football field. It's sad that it takes events like this to bring folks together, but it does nonetheless IMO

I think the kid probably just got a better offer. That's usually the way BCS schools work. Get in the kids ear and tell him he can probably get a release because of the shootings.

Re-check that. :) I vehemently disagree! Some would LIKE to HOPE to think that an event of this magnitude would "bring folx together" lol. But, reality says otherwise. Even for 9/11. lol There are TOO numerous folx who see things for what they are especially when a certain 'faction' of folx are finally affected and they're begging others to feel sorry for them. :( God forbid, but they even want to pray w/ them for the FIRST time(s) in their whole life. xreadx

Ofcourse its not gonna bring EVERYONE together. Taking it that literally is just dumb. But the community of Blacksburg has surrounded that campus and the things going on there can not be doubted. Be a cynic if you wish, but it did and will continue to bring people together. As a fan of a fellow ACC school, I have seen the outpouring of support not only from the ACC schools, but schools across the country

Not sure about the "cynic" comment as I'm a realist and history has shown that americans tend to show their best, which transitions into their historical worst eventually over time lol, during "a currently emotionally trying time......" It's expected that a community would rally the troops during a trying time. I would hope so.
Too bad it didn't rally the young recruit. Wonder why? xreadx

Cynic or honest? You decide. Pessimist or REAList? Again, you decide.
I love those "rose" colored glasses (pun SERIOUSLY so intended) that most americans tend to wear. xreadx It blocks out the truth. xlolx

If one lived the exact same life and endured the exact same turmoil that some of us have, you'd understand. Otherwise, you can freely proceed to stay atop that glorious mountain of deceit lol called "Mount Everything Is A-Okay!" (in your world xreadx ) xthumbsupx

Some of "you" have endured much more than you and have come out with a better way of thinking. xnodx
But don't let facts ruin a good rant. Some people just love being a prisoner in their own minds. Enjoy your walls, I'll enjoy my view.

I don't know them all, but then neither do you - unless your name is Ole. xlolx
I do, however, know some well adjusted, very successful, positive people who see opportunities instead of limitations. Perhaps, since you do not seem to recognize their existence, I do know some folks better than you – and have for most of my life.
Enjoy your trip. I am sure it will be a positive experience for you in one way or another. People seem to find the very things they seek. xwhistlex

Yeah, I bet that one-line success book is a huge hit in certain circles. xlolx But hey, you have to play to your audience.
As far as history goes, it can be a useful tool or it can be a crutch. Consistently, those individuals with strong wills have been able to learn from the past and move forward with success. Others blame fate. They don’t realize that at any time they can get up from the table and refuse to play the game. xreadx
