View Full Version : Weber State #3? @ Sacramento State #4?

Second straight week in the FCS of teams in the Top 5 (presumably).

6:00 Pacific Saturday.

Will this thread get to two pages? Two posts?

Discuss.

For Weber, game 2 of a 4 game gauntlet of Davis, Sac, UND and Montana with three of them on the road.

For Griz purposes, go Weber. We still have a shot at them, but if Sac doesn't lose this one, they'll likely run the table.

Same goes for that. Ideal outcome for the Griz would be to win out and for Weber to win this one.

Not on my settings.

Only watched Sac for a little bit and they were the far superior team to Montana, so a loss wouldn't be surprising at all.

Defenses look comparable. Sac St looks like it has a much more potent offense.

Weber St has feasted off turnovers so far this year with a +12 turnover margin... if Sac St takes care of the ball they should win IMO.

Tough game but if Josh Davis can run like he ran against Sac last season then we should be able to steal a W. If we can't establish the run then we'll be in trouble. Coach Hill game plans and scouting is a very underrated part of Weber's success over the past few seasons.

Weber State's defense has been consistently tough. Sacramento State's offense has been unstoppable.

Quick stat glance: both teams have good defenses, but Sac has the noticeably better offense. That should more than offset Weber's advantage on special teams.

But the turnaround out in Sactown has been fun to watch.

I have not watched Weber but did watch Sac dominate Montana and attended the game vs Eastern. Sac is for real! Sac State is a testiment to coaching, Troy Taylor inherited most of these players and has made them believe. 2-8 last year to BSC champs in one season. Home field advantage is more than enough to give Sac this game and Big Sky Championship outright.
This should be GOTW in FCS

After his stint in Cheney I'm a big Troy Taylor supporting. Like what he's done down at Sac. But Weber's been at the top for a couple of years and have experience in the big games. Heart wants Sac State but head tells me that Weber will win.

Anyone know what the spread is on this game?

I wonder if the winner of this game has a legitimate shot at a top 2 seed if they win out. If Weber State wins out they could have 3 top 10-15 wins over UNI, Sac State, and Montana, depending on where each ends up. If Sac State wins, they could have 2 top 10-15 wins over Montana and Weber State, and potentially a third as well in Montana State.

Either of those resumes would be very impressive, albeit with only 10 wins instead of 11 or 12. I’m not sure what effect that would have, if any, on their eventual seeding come playoff time.

Gotta be careful with statistics. OOC games can skew overall stats. Conference stats show this game may be closer. Weber's offense is averaging 100 yards more per game against Big Sky opponents and their defense has been even more dominant. It looks like it's going to be a good game.

Think the key stat here may be yards per play as they are pretty equal otherwise. If Sacramento State can win the TOP decisively, and their defense plays to their norms, they'll put themselves in a great position to win.

Yes, one must be careful with statistics. Who they come against does matter (cough... Kennesaw State... cough). Both teams played 2 FBS, with SDSU and ASU being comparable and Nevada and Fresno also comparable (Massey gives Fresno a bit of an edge, but call it a wash). Weber's other OOC are UNI and Poly, while Sac played down against Southern Oregon and UNC. UNI is infinitely better than SOU and Poly is a bit better than UNC. So WSU's OOC is a bit tougher. Now let's look at how you derived your conference-only stats... BBQ has played Idaho, SUU, NAU and Davis. 3 of those teams are in the bottom half of the conference and NAU (5th best team in BSC) was a home game. Sac State has played EWU, MSU, UM (back to back to back) and Poly. 3 of those teams are in the TOP HALF of the conference. According to Sup's How They Fared spreadsheet, Sac State has amassed their season statistics against the #1 toughest schedule in FCS, while Weber has played the 14th toughest schedule. Weber is now heading into the meat of their schedule, whereas after this weekend, Sac is a more of a downhill. If you're going to move goalposts, make sure it fits your agenda.

There's also the common opponent to look at: Cal Poly. Sac went on the road, beat them by 24 and out-gained them 519 to 202 yards (2.5x more yards). BBQ had Poly at home, won by 17 and only out-gained them 457 to 346.

All that said... I've watched 2 games start to finish (MSU in person, UM on TV). They are picking up steam and playing well. Gotta figure Sac State wins this one, especially at home.

No argument there. I'm also fine with us being picked as an underdog in this one. My only caution is to be careful with overall statistics when making your picks. My only statement is that this game gives Weber the opportunity to prove their mettle. I think this game is similar to last season when we played E. Wash and held their vaunted offense to 7 points. I have feared all season that with our offense we may be overrated at #3 in FCS. But don't discount our defense and the ability of our coaching staff to gameplan against opponents. I feel Weber has earned it over the past few seasons.

I meant that in no way to be disparaging. Weber seems tough as hell. I think I speak for good number of AGS posters when I say I'm looking forward to tuning in for this game. I didn't take your post as disparaging at all. You actually drove my point home. Relying on statistics is useful but it can be misleading. You can endlessly compare stats or you can just line up and have them play the game. Good luck to the Cats, Sac is an awesome team this year they are going to need it.

No matter who wins this game, if they run the table the rest of the season, I think they should be a top 3. NDSU clear cut #1, JMU could easily be placed above the winner (though not clear cut), and then the winner of this game. There's no one else from a top conference that would have no FCS losses. Sac would have quality wins over UM, MSU (assuming the wheels don't completely fall off and the quality goes to nil) and Weber. BBQ would have quality wins over UNI, Sac, UND (7-4 assuming they don't inexplicably lose to BSC cellar dwellers UNC and SUU at home), and UM. I understand that SDSU could have quality wins over ISU and UNI (possibly SIU if the finish 7-5), but they'd still have an FCS loss, even if it WAS to #1 NDSU. 10-0 vs FCS in a power conference > 10-1, IMO. SDSU has a bit of an argument for it, but undefeated should count for something.

You're either missing some details or that's not accurate. For instance if the kicking team bats the ball at the 2 but it still goes into the endzone it's a touchback. Maybe its once the kicking team has control of the ball it's dead but I thought I've seen scenarios that didn't matter either. That could've been an NFL game though as well.

Yeah, bad description. Control of ball is a better word. Even the kicking team can be standing in the endzone and bat the ball back unlike the NFL. It's only if the ball crosses the line in college. I've never claimed to be the best communicator xlolx

Big drive to open the half for Sac State -- they need to score on this one and set a different tone. Thompson is not back for the Hornets.

Crazy INT for Weber converted into a TD. Weber looking really good right now up 29-10 over Sac who is now playing their backup qb after the starter was injured.

The numbers say Sac St, my eyes say otherwise. I like Weber's run game and the experience gained from last years playoff run. Will be betting on Weber this weekend.

Weber State might be a legit threat to NDSU. They just play nasty and they're talented. That's a good combo...

Agreed, although Weber didn't impress much against UNI, especially in the 2nd half.

Our offense has definitely been a work in progress this year. We've had more success recently due to the resurrection of our running game. Had our offense been in sync to start the year I think we would have beaten San Diego State and Nevada. In fact, we should have beat SDSU anyway as our kickoff return for TD was called back on a phantom penalty.

So is Weber State the #2 team in FCS? Really good wins over UNI and now Sacramento State (probably 2 seeded teams). Also a top 25 win over UC Davis plus 2 big games left against UND and then at Montana.

They could have 5 top 25 wins and 3 over seeded teams.

Thoughts?

Maybe, I am beginning to wonder about the strength of the CAA and how JMU had issues with SB and Villanova. With those teams struggling and Richmond who has some WTF wins and losses now.....what is the CAA really? Is JMU better than Weber....is NDSU really that good with the close game against Davis....good thing FCS has playoffs.

You could make a strong argument for them at #2 right now. Especially with JMU's best wins against Villanova and Stony Brook taking big hits today.

I'm jumping in late on the thread but Weber is looking real good and Sac is looking to have the sort of lackluster effort again Weber that we had against Sac.

Weber has been good all year but they are getting better each week it appear by adding offensive power they did not have in the first 5 weeks.

Agree, I did not answer the main point on dewey's post but I think the argument is valid if things hold here tonight.

The CAA has no real nationally relevant team outside of JMU. I still think the Dukes are really good despite sleep walking at times. They know it's all about the playoffs.

The CAA really doesn't deserve more than 2 bids this year but they'll likely get twice that....

Yeah, the CAA is a disaster outside of JMU. Trying to get a headstart on my poll and it's a complete mess... the next teams after JMU in the conference standings have awful OOC losses (UNH to Holy Cross, Richmond to Fordham) and the rest of the teams worth considering have bad losses in conference.

Well Weber was already doing what they continued to do to Sac before the Corner blitz put him out so probably not a whole lot of difference really.

Comeback slightly more possible but overall would not have banked on it. Weber D was on point tonight.

It would be a mess if Montana beat Weber after Weber beat Sac State. Assuming all win out except for the Weber game, there would be a three way tie with the auto bid going to the winner of the best common opponents, which I don't know if there are enough with the unbalanced schedule. Could be interesting.

Selection committee doesn't take auto bid status into account when determining seeds.

They do if the comparison is against a team with an extra D1 win. Say Montana beats Weber St along with Montana St in the brawl and all three of those top Big Sky teams finish 7-1 in conference with losses to each other. I think that extra win for Montana might get them the nod.

...or I could just be hoping for that because I hate it when FCS teams, especially top FCS teams, play multiple FBS games.

Great game Weber! This team continues to gel and improve each week. I hope we continue to get picked as the underdog. I like opposing teams underestimating us. On the other hand, I hope Thomson can come back and play. Sac State deserves to be in the playoffs this year. They travel to NAU in Flagstaff next week and believe me winning at their place is not easy. 7000 ft of elevation change won't do well for the Cali boys.

None of the teams or coaches are underestimating Weber. Man, we gotta drop some of that silly stuff around here because I think we all know better than that. A top 4 team being underestimated, not gonna happen. Weber is not the underdog man that just doesn't fit.

Not really even then. I want to see more FCS vs FCS game on the OOC schedules. I acknowledge that every team is going to want (and in some cases need) one FBS game but the more teams that play 2 FBS games the less "cross-pollination" we get to compare teams from separate conferences with each other. Weber probably does as good of a job as anyone playing tough OOC FCS games as their recent series with UNI and upcoming series with JMU shows but I'd still rather see them play someone like Abilene Christian than have both those teams play 2 FBS games.

The poll results on this thread and being picked by Vegas to be underdogs for 2 consecutive weeks say otherwise. Sac’s fans on their site still believe that we are the 3rd best team in the Big Sky.

I think Weber can beat or lose to anyone. You probably need to score 30+ points to beat us. Montana’s offense is certainly capable and I know from firsthand experience of the home field advantage you guys have there at WA/Griz. Should be a good showdown.

I think the CAA gets max 3 (purely because that's the prediction I made in the "Bold Predictions" thread...)

Wonder if both teams win out, will politics and visions of a likely sellout in Frisco will keep JMU on the #2 seed line. Weber looked really good last night and if they beat Montana in Wash/Griz I would certainly say they'd earn the #2 seed.
