I'm a Cubbies fan

Soriano is finally starting to come around.

I'm kinda torn on Derrek Lee. Don't know if I like 40 HR Derrek or the guy who is currently hovering around .400

The pitching staff, sans Zambrano has been lights out. If he can snap back into form, the staff would be one of the best in MLB

Don't speak too soon! I was there last night and watched "Pat the Bat's" two monster mashes knock in 5! Hamel K'd 7 in 7--two solo mistakes. Soriano, though, is one tough cookie. I wish the Phils had made a run at him.
I'm going to be in Chicago next week and got tickets for Cubs/White Sox on Friday! Feel pretty lucky since I hear they are tough to get. Looking forward to my first visit to Wrigley since 1994.;)

Since you guys brought up the Cubs, I have a question I've been curious about for sometime. I'll start by saying that I am not a Cubs fan, but I don't really have anything against them so this isn't meant to be an attack on any level. I have been to a game in Wrigley (June of 1992) nad enjoyed it.

So here goes, part of the charm that draws people to the Cubs is the loveable loser culture they've played up forever. That culture is a big part of what makes the Cubs different than most every other Major League team. Only the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and maybe the Cardinals have the same level of passion and tradition seperates them from the cookie cutter franchises everyone else has.

That being the case, what would it do to Cubs Nation if they actually won a World Series title?

Would they lose their identity? What would then seperate them from the Angels, Diamondbacks or Marlins except having a more historic ballpark? Would Cubs fans around the country that had no tie to the franchise due to having lived in Chicago at some point lose interest?

Don't take any of this the wrong way, I've just always been curious as to what effect it would have on their perception if the won a World Series. What do Cubs fans themselves think?

I've just always been curious as to what effect it would have on their perception if the won a World Series..."Lovable loser culture" is a TV creation and doesn't really exist in Chicagoland. The Cubs are not losers and have done more than a lot of teams outside of winning WS recently. The thing about the Cubs is historic and Wrigley. Win another WS and that just heightens the allure.

True, but they've had a lot more success short of winning the World Series during their drought. The Cubs strike me as historic losers, the Red Sox as historic chokers.

I moved to Fort Wayne IN in 1982, and wanted to root for a midwest team. Since I'm a born and bred die-hard Red Sox fan, it had to be a National League team...either the Reds or the Cubs. I picked the Cubs because until 2004, they and my Red Sox had so much in common...they would build up your hopes only to dash them. I also think Wrigley and Fenway are the two best parks in baseball.

Every year I follow the Cubs quietly as I roar for my Sox...and will always pull for the Cubs until they meet the Red Sox in the World Series...then, I have to pull for my Sox.....

And tonight, since they are playing a New York team, I especially will pull for the Cubs.

Only thing worse than the pitching was the commentary.

After the Cubs intentionally walked a player, the pitcher got down 2-0 on the batter. The genius from ESPN said "Well after throwing those intentional balls your muscles get in a rhythm and it's hard to get out of it" (or something to that effect). He was then stupid enough to repeat it again later.

I'm sure your muscles adapt to throwing those 4 balls way more than throwing in your regular motion. xrolleyesx

Is ESPN trying to lose viewers? Sutcliffe and Dusty Baker? I actually MUTED my television last night. When they started arguing over their #1 starter selections is when I lost it. They sounded like a bunch of 14 year old girls arguing about god knows what. Not one of those dummies picked Santana so ESPN maybe realizing their error in placing these 2 in the booth at the same time had to cut over to Steve Phillips to get it right.

but the Wright for Green one was rather shocking, despite the lefty reliever. Green's just been better than Wright this season. I actually thought he'd bring in Reyes for Gotay.

No. It was a complete no-brainer to have Wright (or Reyes) hit for Green in that situation. I agree about Reyes over Gotay, but I think Willie was being overly cautious with Reyes.

Here are the #'s (yes I'm aware of the small sample sizes), but I still think you'll see that he has to pinch hit Wright over Green.

Green has been terrible against lefties: .244 Avg. .311 OBP. .293 SLG (YIKES).

Wright against lefties: .282 Avg. .356 OBP. .359 SLG
Reyes against lefties: .442 Avg. .449 OBP. .698 SLG

Wright had a terrible April, true, but he is back to his old self in May:
.328 Avg, .353 OBP, .602 SLG, 6 2B, 4 HR, 14 RBI.

Willie had no intentions of using Reyes yesterday due to the hamstring "cramp" the night before. Not when the Mets next 6 games are against the Yankees and Braves. So he has to use his best available right-handed bat in that situation and that is Wright.

Zambrano comes off easily his best start of the year, going 8 innings and only giving up 1 ER to the Mets. Cubs won that game 10-1. Zambrano's problem has been HR's. He has given up atleast 1 HR in all of his starts except 1, which was only a 4 innings outing. If he can keep the ball in the park, he should be in good shape.

This is Masset's first start of the season. His last outing, he gave up 4 ER in 2/3 of an inning to KC

Yea, it is the catchers fault the pitcher can't hit his marks.

No one loves Barrett more than I do, and no one thinks Big Z needs to control his temper more than I do.

With that said, I watched the game, and Barrett did make more than one glaring mistake. Zambrano didn't bring his "A" game, but he wasn't nearly as horrible as the score indicated when he was pulled. The Cubs defense, which had been their saving grace, was beyond terrible today.

Zambrano sucks. Also, notice how many punches Barrett threw. 1 player went to the hospital for treatment. It wasn't Zambrano. Cut the guy. He's sucking the life out of this team. Trade him for grass seed. Anything would be better than having his 5th inning meltdowns and retarted temper.

CHC: S. Marshall (1-2, 2.25)
ATL: L. Cormier (0-1, 18.00)
7:35pm ET

Marshall hasn't given up more than 2 ER in any start this year, including his last start which happened to be against the Braves. He went 6.2 innings, giving up only 1 ER, while striking out 8. Lets make it 3 in a row and 5 of the last 6

I'm going to go ahead and give you Cubbies the win tonight. Cormier is HORRIBLE. I'm writing this one off. xoopsx

Meltdown last night by Dempster really hurts. Cubs now 6 games back of the Brewers starting this week. One game with Houston tonight, then 3 game set with Seattle, all at home.

Tonight's matchup:
HOU: W. Williams (2-8, 5.79)
CHC: C. Zambrano (6-5, 5.38)

So, knowing that Zambrano's going to get stretched for as many innings as possible with the tired 'pen, should I start Zambrano on my fantasy team??

haha, the question of the day

he has been good, bad, good, bad, good, bad in his last 6 starts

all I know is that he is costing himself money, and he better start getting things right if he wants to get paid

Zambrano now batting .321 on the year, damn good for a pitcher

3 game set with Seattle starts today

SEA: J. Washburn (5-5, 3.94)
CHC: R. Hill (5-4, 2.71)

Ichiro has been hot lately. Washburn is coming off 2 bad starts in a row, raising his ERA almost .75

Rich Hill on the other hand, has allowed only 2 ER in his last 3 starts, 2 of which were ND which the Cubs lost after he left
