Joins former NAU coach Brad Childress' staff

The Minnesota Vikings have named Derek Mason to the staff as Assistant Defensive Backs coach. Mason joins the Vikings after 13 seasons coaching on the collegiate level. Mason most recently worked at Ohio University where he helped Frank Solich’s staff rebuild the Bobcats program and play in the GMAC Bowl following the 2006 season. The bowl game was the first for Ohio since the 1968 Tangerine Bowl. The team advanced to the Mid-America Conference title game against Central Michigan and ended the season with a 9-5 mark.

Mason has worked on both sides of the ball and assisted on special teams in the return
game throughout his coaching career. Mason got his first exposure to the NFL through NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship opportunities with St. Louis in 1996, the NY Giants in 2000 and Oakland in 2006.

A 1992 graduate of Northern Arizona University, Mason played DB for the Lumberjacks when Brad Childress served on the staff. Mason was teammates at NAU with current Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart.
