Which I-AA schools have built a new stadium in the past few years?

89's futbol thread sparked this one - sorry if it's a duplicate to anything that's been posted previously (possibly by me).

Speaking as a fan of a team that desperately needs one, I'm wondering which schools have built one recently (since 2000)?

What did it cost?

How much does it hold?

Was it paid for by alums (e.g. - G-town & Maine) or the school?

Our Stadium was built in 1986 and originally seated 12,500 plus grass end zones for seating at big games. We've had a couple expansions. End zone seating at both ends was added prior to the 1995 season bringing us to 19,000. Our last expansion added over 4000 permanent seats and we can seat up to 24,000 with portable bleachers. 23,110 is considered a sellout.

Didn't Princeton just build a beautiful new stadium?

Stony Brook's 8,200-seat LaValle Stadium opened in 2002 for $22 million. I don't know how it was financed but it's named for a state senator. :rolleyes:

In 1998 Maine managed to build 10,000-seat Morse Field at Alfond Stadium for $6.1 million, all with private donations, including $3.1 million by the Alfonds and $2.1 million by the Morses.

Princeton's could be the best newer one. Built in 1996-97 for $45M. Actually holds less than their former stadium, but that's a good thing in their case.

Gardner-Webb built a new football center and renovated Spangler Stadium last season. It's really nice inside the football center on all three floors. the new seats, scoreboard, etc. are cool too. Don't have any pics to link.

He didn't ask for renovations he asked who has built a new stadium since 2000, how much does it seat and how much did it cost.

The griz have certainly renovated since, but Ronbo didn't even include a price. :)

OK, OK, I don't know what it cost originally. 5 million? Maybe another fan can help there. It's not stated on the web site. I know the last expansion was as expensive as the orginal stadium I think. Man constuction costs have gone up!

We got a 1 million dollar donation from Billionaire Dennis Washington for the construction of the stadium. Thus Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Geeze your post smacks of Griz envy. Why don't you come on over to the dark side and kill that pain you suffer? We have room for every Montanan in Grizzly land. :)

Robert Morris just opened.
Coastal C is only a few years old as well.

Central Conn. State's Arute field opened in 2000, along with an Upgraded Sacred Heart. Both are nice but small venues

:nod: Brooks Stadium opened for our first year in 2003 and cost around 11M. 6400 seats. Combination of private and public funds. Looking to build a fieldhouse and add some more seats in the near future.

Towson University of the A10 started a renovation which was almost a complete rebuilding of their stadium and the project was completed in 2003 I believe. I could not find any clear pictures of Johnny Unitas Stadium though.

Princeton one looks great!!!
Princeton's stadium is a beauty. great sight lines, close to the field, good amenities, and, get this--no charge for the program! We played there in 2003 but don't return til 2007. To me, it's the best I-AA facility I have been in or seen, and that's coming from one who thinks his school's own facilities are pretty good.

Thanks guys - this is great stuff that helped me out with a thread I started at the Fordham board. There are some dynamics above and beyond the budget that make it unlikely to expect a new football stadium for us anytime soon, but at least this list allowed me to do some homework to see about stadium costs, whether it was privately funded or not, capacity, etc. Thanks again.

Oh, and Ronbo and catbob - good stuff. A little smack is always encouraged in any thread of mine. Kudos!

It would be fitting that they finally agree on one thing together before Pataki's out of there.

Also, interesting that Bruno has some publicly funded minor league/college ballpark named after him but he took such a high and mighty anti-public funding approach with the Jets' Manhattan stadium push ... now, granted, the $'s are clearly different but at least the philosophy should be the same, no?

btw, the more I saw and read about Elon's stadium, the more awesome I realize that place is. I stumbled on the architecht firm's website that provided details about the stadium and, if we ever do get a project like that off the ground at Rose Hill, I'd love it if the firm was the same one or at least one that took the same approach.

Really impressed with Johnny Unitas Stadium, Princeton (obviously) and although it's small - Georgetown's. I thought these ones, along w/Elon, did the best of blending with the existing campus look & feel (at least as far as I know it for each school).
