I haven't seen a dedicated topic to the horrendous name change that the Mid-Con is going through. If it exists, my apologies. Summit League? Are you kidding me?

I touch on the topic at http://collegesportsinfo.com/blog as well.

I would have loved if they just absorbed the Great West for football and adopted that name. Or made a deal with the trademark holders of the Great Midwest to bring that name back.

Great West doesn't really work for a league with teams in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Louisiana.

Staying away from a Geographical title is good.

Mid-Continent Line-up - 2008
Oral Roberts - OKLAHOMA
Oakland - MICHIGAN
IUPUI - Indiana
IPFW - Indiana
Southern Utah
Mo. Kansas City
Centenary - LOUISIANA
Western Illinois
North Dakota State
South Dakota State

I agree, I just hate the Pat Summit League as a name.

It seems like any change in anything that's done for marketing reasons fails miserably. I don't know the back story on this but it has the ugly stench of a marketing ploy from a mile away.

I don't know about that. I'm not the biggest fan of the Horizon League name change years back (I think they fit a certainly geography in which they could have come up with something more regional sounding) .

That said, I think that while the worst conference in the country is the Atlantic Sun, I think it's a much better name that the old Trans America Athletic Conference, or the TAAC. Just think of the confusion that would have existed is they were still the Trans America when the movie Transamerica (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407265/) came out.

They actually planned on announcing the whole thing on this upcoming Tuesday but IPFW can't keep a secret very well and decided to print that IPFW is a Summit League member in all the Fort Wayne phone books.

The name is stupid. None of these teams really seem to be on a summit, the teams aren't at the Summit (i.e. the top) of any sport, and it's not catchy.

Report: Mid-Con Conference to change name
Confusion, new vision seen as reasons SDSU's future home will alter title to Summit League

By Terry Vandrovec

Published: May 10, 2007

There's nothing middling about this name - other than the way it was made public.

Beginning next season, the Mid-Continent Conference reportedly will become the Summit League. The name and a new logo for South Dakota State's future conference home will likely be unveiled next Tuesday at a news conference, but word of the change leaked early because it was part of an advertisement for incoming member Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne placed in a recently released phonebook in Fort Wayne, Ind.

While Commissioner Tom Douple could not be reached for comment Wednesday, the ABC television affiliate in Fort Wayne reported that it received confirmation from the league.

"I'm told there will be a press conference on May 15," said SDSU marketing and promotion director Micah Grenz, the school's representative on the name and logo committee. "Exactly what will be released at that press conference, I'm not totally sure."

According to Grenz, the league began exploring possible changes for a variety of reasons including: its diverse and expanding geographic footprint, confusion over the full name in light of the frequently used abbreviation (Mid-Con) and the mediocre connotation of the word "mid". In a fall survey of 800 student-athletes, athletic staff members, boosters and media, 91 percent felt that a new name and logo - a rainbow doesn't mean what it used to - would boost perception of the league. . . . Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council Lanuches Summit Plan

Mid-Con becomes The Summit LeagueMay 15, 2007

Elmhurst, IL - The Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council has embraced a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all its student-athletes.

The Summit Plan, which places an emphasis on presidential leadership, seeks to advance the league to one of the premier mid-major conferences in the country. It focuses on student-athlete welfare, academic performance, increased home attendance, and improving the league's rating percentage index (RPI) in all sports.

The league plans to recognize the academic achievements of its student-athletes at every opportunity, while seeking to improve the Academic Progress Report (APR) scores of each team. The marketing efforts will be focused on increasing the home attendance, which helps support the student-athletes and provides additional exposure. In addition, the Summit Plan will include a review of staffing, budgeting, and scheduling by each member institution to be conducted with the goal of improving RPI in all conference sports.

Included in the plan is the creation of a new image with the unveiling of a new name, logo, and Web site. As of June 1, 2007, the conference will be known as The Summit League (www.thesummitleague.org).

"The Summit League provides a mental image to reach for the top, both academically and athletically," Commissioner Tom Douple said. "The new name fits in perfectly with the Presidents Council's vision for the continued improvement and growth of the league."

The name was developed over the last eight months by a conference-wide committee. The logo itself was designed by Nina Schmidt, a graphic designer at South Dakota State University. . . . (read more)

if "Summit League" is the best they could come up with, I'd hate to see what names they rejected...

Other finalists:
Great American Conference (GAC or gaak? - nope)
Big Star Conference (rip off Big Sky and Texas in one easy name)
Vista League (hoping for Microsoft sponsorship?)
Pinnacle League (got nothing funny - still a bad name, though)
Great Plains Conference (good for us(NDSU), not so much for most of the others)
Summit Conference (that's a little redundant redundant)

They didn't go with my suggestion: Super Extreme Action League X.

Not surprising since I wasn't allowed to give my presentation. Stupid restraining orders. I had sketches for action figures representing each conference member.

Or not.
