Lame award of the year.
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, whose coronation as the first European-born Most Valuable Player in NBA history has been expected for weeks, is scheduled to officially receive the MVP trophy at a Tuesday news conference in Dallas, ESPN.com has learned.
The NBA has handed out its past three MVPs -- two straight to Phoenix's Steve Nash after Minnesota's Kevin Garnett won in 2004 -- at the start of the second round. But it's believed the league opted to put some distance between Nowitzki's ceremony and the Mavericks' stunning first-round exit against Golden State.

I agree with Nowitzki being MVP, but I feel certain he'd trade it for the ability to still be playing.

The way these playoffs have gone I say that the voting be after the first round of the playoffs. First of all, if you are a great player but your team isn't in the playoffs then you shouldn't be eligible. Then the players in the playoffs battle it out in the first round for a final say in who deserves it more. Right now, Nash definitely deserves it more but right now it is a "regular season" award...

Please, if nash were in nowitzski's position, I highly doubt you'd be making this argument. xbawlingx

Dirk was the best player this year. Dallas's guards were dominated by their former coach. Dirk was doubled and tripled every time he touched the ball. Yes, he still should have been agressive. Nash is the best player in the NBA by FAR. Not even close. Phoenix beats Detroit in 6.

It's a regular season award. He was the best player on the best team, no surprise

If the writers had bothered to check how Dirk did when playing top opponents, then they wouldn't call him the MVP. He pulled his disapearing act often in the regular season against top teams, just like he did in the playoffs.
And the best team doesn't lose in the first round to a team that didn't clinch a playoff spot until the last game. Best record? yes. Best team? NO.

whoever said nash is the best player in the league is wrong. He is the best point guard and the best teammate in the league, but the best player is kobe bryant. If the MVP were to go to who the best player was, michael jordan would have had at least 10 MVPs and Kobe would have won one by now. It is a regular season award and should stay that way. It's called the most VALUABLE player, and that is what dirk and nash were for their teams.

oh wow field goal percentage, that tells the story of who the best player is. What it tells is that Kobe took more shots and missed more shots than dirk or nash. Which is obvious considering dirk doesnt have to do it all himself he has terry, howard, stackhouse, etc. Nash has two other all stars with him to do the scoring. Kobe has....Odom and Walton, wow. Kobe is the most complete offensive player in the game and was just named first team all defense.
