View Full Version : #1 NDSU versus Missouri State

Bison Fan in NW MN

Can Missouri State come into the FD and pull off a huge upset?

USD just curb stomped them and I think NDSU might be a tad bit better than USD but anything can happen....right?

NDSU is 6-0 2-0
Missouri State is 1-4 1-1

This is a game where the Bison can play a lot of players. Great for game reps for them. Get Trey Lance out of the game early so there is no chance of injury. Noah Sander could QB this team to victory....or James Hendricks (HS QB).

MSU is going to get curb stomped but the score will probably be closer than expected with a lot of young players getting reps. Or maybe Coach Entz keeps the foot on the pedal and beats them by 40+......xdontknowx

For the Bison: Get the game over early and get ready for a huge battle against SDSU.

Yeah, this one could get ugly. Their QB Huslig is a nice player and he's hurt the Bison with his legs before (2 years ago in the dome specifically) but he can't finish drives for them.

Hoping for a clean and injury free game. The Bison got a big down in Brookings a week from Saturday. So I suppose you could call this a trap game but even a sleepwalking Bison team wins easily IMO.

We almost beat Missouri State. This will be ugly. 3rd string by halftime, cheerleaders and band in by the 4th quarter.

If this isn’t over by halftime I’ll be disappointed in NDSU. Of course I know SDSU will find a way to make the Indiana State game a close one so I can’t say much.

On paper this is just a slight mismatch.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48892775713_a03a29711b_c.jpg

Coming into this game Missouri St is 112th in rushing yards allowed per game and 108th in rushing yards allowed per carry. Yikes!

They do appear to have a good punter/punt coverage team though.

Bison Fan in NW MN

MSU gives up 238 rushing yards/game....xeekx and they only convert 26% of their 3rd downs....xsmhx

NDSU could hand off every play and win this game going away.....

The only way this isn't a 4 TD win for Bison, is that it's nothing but the frosh for the Bison (especially on D) the entire 4th quarter, after leading by 35+ at end of 3.

40 is a lot of points. If Entz keeps the foot on the pedal then no problem but the 2nds and 3rds will get a lot of snaps so the press might not get covered.

I'm thinking 40+ is the correct answer based on some quick math of my expected final score:

Difference: > 40 points

If NDSU left the starters in, MSU would not score a point.

NDSU's 2nd string could beat MSU by 30+ points. I think the Bison are going to get into the 50s with MSU getting a garbage time score or 2 on the reserves. But I would like to see a big 0 on the scoreboard for them.

Indiana St winning this weekend would be a pretty big upset. They're 19 point underdogs to SDSU. Missouri St winning would be a historic upset since they're 40 point underdogs.

I never mind seeing SDSU lose especially a game they have no business losing but, selfishly, I'd like to see them roll this week so they're feeling really good about themselves coming into next week's Dakota Marker showdown.

This will be the first home game we get to attend this year and our seats are way "down" in row Q instead of our usual row FF or GG near the top of the end zone. This was probably that last choice for other Team Makers who don't have season tickets and request single-game tickets before the general public.

MSU is not a good team. A lot of "coach speak" during the week which is fine but this game will not be close. Start fast and put this team away early. No injuries. Get the 2nds and 3rds some valuable game reps.

NDSU could hand off and run the ball every play and win going away. The Bison OL will dominate this DL, which is not good.

MSU has no running game.....xsmhx.....take away Huslig (QB) and this will be a rout early.

Might just be a few students and fans gone for the long weekend? I haven't run into any fans, except here, that don't like the uni's.

MSU isn't a big draw, if I wasn't moving on Thursday, I would be there. Pretty much an all day event for me, living 3.5 hours away, soon to be 4 hours. Still a better crowd than what I saw during the early years of DI. First playoff game in DI, was about 12,000 fans.

I think the all green look is going to look bad ass with the harvest helmets. I like how NDSU does it, not over the top and they keep the traditional colors....no color schemes that are not school colors.

NDSU rarely does it so it stays "fresh" so to speak. Now if they did what Oregon does with all kinds of crap combinations and colors then it would get really stale.

FWIW they only sold 1 of the 6 student sections this week to the general public so maybe they did claim most of them. Or maybe they knew demand would be down for this game so they didn't bother to sell any endzone student sections to give students the chance to claim them Friday and this morning still.

Is MoSt playing good or NDSU not playing well?
They showed up to play. Our offensive line has played like complete garbage Hats off to the Bears. Their D is playing well.

Somebody needs to buy 52 a nice steak dinner. NCAA rules be damned. That boy came to play and I imagine that is hard to do on a one win team.

The funny thing is that everyone is complaining about how bad the Bison offense has looked. They have 421 yards of offense right now.

Some thoughts after the game:

Kudos to the MSU defense, they came to play.

MSU's offense is crap. No running game and a lot of 50/50 balls. Not much trouble for the Bison defense. Bison defense played well.

TL seemed off. His stats were good but made some high throws and had open receivers in the middle of the field that he missed. Very athletic and excellent runner. I this is his bad game, I'll take it. Not really a bad game though.

Like Coach Entz said..."win is a win"....

The SDSU game next week will be the FCS game of the year.

Need to be balanced offensively next week. Dakota Marker could determine the conference.

What ifff... Sdsu wins this, wins out. JMU wins out and NDSU gets 3 seed? Haha.

NDSU really missed meatstick today.
Alot of penalties and didn't open up playbook. This one was a ho hum win.
Still... it was a 22 point win.

I watched the game again and it wasn't as bad the second time as it was live, MSU has some pretty nice players on D, 52 was everywhere, really quick sideline to sideline and played a great game. NDSU did a couple of fairly stupid things that cost them points in the game, the trip by Watson and the long screen pass play was really dumb and probably cost them 7 points but the interior line and the LB group for MSU played really well. We struggled with them a couple years back in the dome as well. Any way, glad it is over but NDSU needs to step it up big time next weekend in Brookings and I really don't see that happening. Bunnies 28 Bison 24, take it to the bank #BOOKIT

Why was this game called after the first quarter?Seventeen, yes, seventeen punts in that game, 10 by them and 7 by NDSU. It was a mistake filled snooze fest.

Yep... one of the uglier Bison football games I've ever watched. Reminded me of watching a Vikings game and that is definitely not a compliment.

That said, they picked the right team to put up a stinker against I guess. I'm concerned about how poor the O-line played (specifically in run blocking) against a pretty bad front 7 considering they're going up against one of the best front 7s in the FCS next Saturday. Hopefully watching the film of that gives them a kick in the ass this week and they come out focused and motivated to get back on the right foot next Saturday.

IMO, the OL lacked focus. Still ran for well over 200 run it seemed like a struggle. But hats off to the Bears, they schemed up the Bison pretty well. Come hell or high water, they were determined to take away A gap power.

#52 (LB) looked like an AA yesterday.

Offense wasn't sharp for sure but next week should give them all the motivation they need to bring their A game.

Take away Colfield's 58 yard run and our RB's averaged 2.6 ypc. That was the Bears defensive plan, to run blitz and stack the box. I'm surprised we didn't have some big plays off play action but just maybe we were playing conservative and didnt want to show a future opponent too much on tape!

You must have missed the Babich era, argh! Even some of the games during the Bohl era, before he figured things out.

Yep, seemed like the big runs were mostly off of ball carrier effort not particularly good blocking. That big 58 yard run by Cofield was pretty much all him when he spun away from 2 or 3 potential tacklers just past the LOS. Outside of that run Bison RBs had 34 rushes for 71 yards. You could tell that Missouri St had the Bison offense out of stride just because they threw the ball 31 times yesterday. That's the most they've thrown the ball in a single game since the 2016 semifinals against JMU.

Offense wasn't sharp for sure but next week should give them all the motivation they need to bring their A game.A lot of those running yards were on chunk plays, NDSU sustained very little consistency in the run game yesterday. There were a lot of little things that kept the score down, a couple of motion penalties at key times, really poor ball spot on a 3rd down play, tripping penalty which was sort of away from the play. There were several times we had 2nd and short and ended up punting. Just a weird game overall. I have no idea how we ended up with over 400 yards of offense because it sure didn't seem like it.

NDSU couldn't run the ball yesterday for whatever reason and had to go to plan B which didn't really work either.

True, I should've said that was the one of the uglier Bison football games I've watched this decade. Still doesn't come close to that 3-0 debacle (ironically enough also against Missouri St) to close out the 2010 regular season. And there was plenty of frustration before then too.

Yeah, the "going vanilla so they don't show much on tape" comment doesn't hold water. Entz has said a few times when they've run their special teams gimmicks (like the fake XP against Butler) that he wanted to get more stuff on tape for future opponents to have to prepare for. I don't see any reason why this mentality is different for the offensive play calling.

well even the Bison can have a mulligan but if this keeps up next you can bet the JMU drum will be heard beating faintly somewhere over the horizon

I wouldn't be surprised if some "voters" in polls across the FCS landscape drop them, just so they have a reason to pump up a different team.

You didn’t have your best game offensively, but your D picked up the slack and pitched a shutout. That’s what great teams do. Absolutely no reason to drop them.

These days a 22-0 shutout against a MVFC team isnt good enough. Who gets held to a higher standard than NDSU?
Other posts talk about quality losses, but shutout wins are not enough now. Weird.

MSUs head coach is an excellent defensive coach. They schemed us perfectly. I give them alot of credit. I think MSU is only 3-4 players away from being a very good team.

He is but coming into the game they had the 120th ranked (out of 124 teams) scoring defense in the FCS allowing 41.2 points per game. They were 106th in total defense (458.6 yards allowed per game), 112th in rush yards allowed per game (238 yards), and 121st in rush yards allowed per carry (5.48 ypc). NDSU's offense came in under those averages in all those categories.

This was a bad defensive team. Maybe they played a fantastic game on Saturday because they sure didn't look like a bad defense but I have a hard time giving them too much credit given how poor their defense has been to this point in 2019 (and it's not like their schedule has been a murderer's row either).

Like all the coaches say when they are on local radio.....the Bison get everyone's A game and this one was no different.

I went and looked at their defensive stats and they are not good but the played a very good game yesterday. What does that say to me? Actually, nothing. They played way above their heads and the NDSU offense was lethargic. Bison defense was very good.
