Here's this weeks poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-5-top-25-results-2/

A few thoughts:

JSU falling to #26 snapped their 78 week streak in the AGS top 25. The last time they weren't in the top 25 was week 12 of 2013. They missed the top 25 by a single point. Every vote counts!
For all the flack the CAA got for underperforming in the playoffs last year they've got 7 teams in the top 25 right now and looks like they'll get at least 5 bids again.
There was some interesting 2-4 spot movement in the middle of the poll (like Central Arkansas moving up 3 spots on a bye for example) but if you look at the point totals they weren't much different from last week, it's just teams are bunched pretty tightly in that #9-#13 range with only 65 points separating them.
A couple traditional powers are on the rise as Villanova is at their highest ranking since early 2015 and Montana is at their highest ranking since early 2016.
NDSU was #1 for the 21st consecutive poll breaking their own record for most consecutive weeks at #1 set from mid-2012 through the end of 2013 (they were #2 briefly in the 2014 preseason poll before reclaiming the top spot in week 1).

Oh and another interesting note. The AGS #5 team has lost 3 weeks in a row (Maine in week 2, Towson in week 3, and UNI in week 4). Villanova is at William & Mary this Saturday. Will they break the curse?

I can think of a few excuses. Both of their losses are to teams I have ranked higher than them. They beat EWU who made themselves into a half decent win again I thought after dropping UND. Their dominating win over a decent Chatty team is also impressive.

Not saying I'm proud of still having them in my top 25 but it's justifiable IMO.

EWU is not back. UND turned it over 6 times in the snow and were in it til the very end.

Long answer: Bill & Mary lost to Albany this weekend, so #$!! yes.

I didn't watch but judging from the gamecast and stats UND put themselves out of the game early. They got it to within 1 score for a bit in the 4th quarter but it was a multiple score game other than that for pretty much the entire game other than that. You can claim UND shot themselves in the foot but it's fair to point out that EWU didn't turn it over once which impressed me given the conditions.

I still think UND is a decent team, I'm surprised they dropped completely out of the top 40 since Sam Houston is still hanging around in the ORV but I may be too high on EWU (even though I'm lower than the consensus) and if I am my flimsy reasoning for still ranking JSU collapses also.

I think Sam Houston is better than where they are located in this poll. I understand the reticence in voting for them. We won't get any love in the next two weeks no matter what we do (v. SFA, v. Lamar). Our next chance to prove anything will be week 8 versus Nicholls, then week 9 versus UCA. We should be undefeated in conference when we play the Colonels in Huntsville.

Great article again Professor. One little additional piece to add to this "snapping a 78 week streak being in the AGS top 25 dating back to week 13 of 2013" is that it is by ONE point.

Did you watch the game Saturday?

We looked like GARBAGE.

We could have gotten beat by PeeWee Middle School JV or Alabama. We still looked terrible.

Just because the team that stood on our throat is ranked means exactly nothing. We got S-L-A-U-G-H-T-E-R-E-D.

I watched most of the JSU/EWU game. I didn't turn the Austin Peay game on until it was 45-14 so I just saw a bit of garbage time (when JSU looked pretty decent xlolx).

Like I said I'm not proud of still having them in my top 25 but I felt like if I put EWU back in I should probably keep JSU in. It's completely possible I'm too high on both and neither should be in but it's pretty tough to have one without the other right now.

What are your thoughts on Houston Baptist PC?
I mentioned them in the "How they fared" thread. I think they're deserving of consideration. They're amongst 17 other teams on my outside the top 25 watch list but I'd like to see them beat a team with a pulse before putting them in my poll ballot. That said I wouldn't fault anyone for putting them in the #23-#25 range either. There's not a lot of real deserving teams for those spots anyway IMO.

Their turnaround this season is a great story regardless.

I'm not PC, but I have HBU at 24.

If you put their previous seasons in a box and take this season in a vaccum, HBU is having themselves a solid season.

Outsider1
September 30th, 2019, 01:23 PM
HBU is having a good season. They are on my radar, but want to see more. For now, I am leaving UIW, Lamar and HBU out from my home SLC. If HBU does what UIW did last year, then I will be really impressed. I want to see more defense though. They have been doing well recruiting the last couple of years and the coaches are beginning to capitalize on that. All of our teams need more conference play.

Yes, like PC mentioned it is always a good story and I always like when a new team comes in and gains some traction or a formerly very bad team does it.

Currently, 2 of the 6 people who have posted their polls have the Bobcats above Weber State and I'm curious to know the reasoning. Yes BBQ is 2-2 and MSU is 4-1. All losses of the 2 were to FBS, but Weber clearly had better performances losing the 2 games by a combined 12 points. Combined with the win over (at the time) #5 UNI being better than any win for the Bobcats (especially with controlling the game from start to finish), I'd probably have both in the top 10 but I'd put Weber above us (UM also given the resumes as they currently stand).

I feel like some are giving Montana St a lot more credit for the SEMO win than I am. We'll see how that plays out but I think that's a pretty shaky signature win to declare on a top 10 (or top 5 in some cases) resume. I don't even have SEMO included in my poll but there are plenty that do it seems. They'll get a chance to show their stuff this week against a revitalized Tennessee Tech team and the follow it up with games at Austin Peay and Jacksonville St so we'll find out quick how good of a win that SEMO win was.

Wrong.

I still hedge my bets that when it's all said and done JSU will be in the 15-25 range. EWU I think might go on a run given their schedule. They'll work their way back in with strong performance this weekend. Maine is really the only team that has stumbled out of the blocks that I feel might not turn it around.

Nicholls State:
vs. Kansas State: Loss by 35. As expected.
vs. PV A&M: Won by 7. I really thought they would have won by much more.
vs. SFA: Won by 18. Acceptable against a very bad SFA team.
vs. Texas State: Lost by 21. This game should not only have been close but Nicholls really should have had enough to win it.
2-2 overall.

At 186 YPG rushing and 167 YPG receiving..they are in trouble if they get their running game shut down. Though a balance like that tends to win a few more games than they lose.

They'll get a chance to show their stuff this week against a revitalized Tennessee Tech team and the follow it up with games at Austin Peay and Jacksonville St so we'll find out quick how good of a win that SEMO win was.

I would agree on SEMO for the 2 people that put us above Weber, as that had to factor in with their placement. UNI is athe better win for sure. I think our top 10 placement is due more to being one of a small group with 4 or more D-I wins (also no FCS losses). As of today, where you put them in your own poll (#8) seems appropriate. I also wouldn't argue having both Weber and Montana ahead of us in the top 10. This week probably won't tell us much about the pecking order of the Big Sky either, except perhaps the EWU-Sac State game, although there were 2 or 3 surprises last weekend.

I actually moved them down from #7 after the Texas State game -- Everett Withers left a burning tire/dumpster fire combo when they fired him. Still think their upside is as good as UCA's -- anxious to see them in conference play.

Only one team in the AGS Top 40 (Idaho State) that wasn't in my Top 40 (Cal Poly). Was THIIIIISSSS close to a first-time-for-everything moment.

Can you explain the votes for SC State for me, please? I just don't get it at all.

Game 1: They did surprise most people the first week of the season at home against Wofford
Game 2: Shut out D2 Lane
Game 3: Lost by 39 to USF which is USF's only win so far on the year.

Here it is with a few additional thoughts:

Should Dartmouth be getting a bit more consideration (perhaps over Princeton)? My thought process was that they beat Colgate arguably more convincingly and held them to less points than either Villanova or Maine did (with more games under Colgate's belt). Princeton did beat Bucknell by a similar point margin to Villanova, but Princeton gave up the most points to Bucknell in any of their games thus far. I just am not convinced that Princeton is that much better than Dartmouth and decided to give the Big Green some credit.
Tennessee Tech appears to be flying under the radar. Austin Peay is the sexy pick due to their destruction of Jacksonville State. However, if Jacksonville State is not very good (as some of their fans on this board have claimed), then this really should not be enough to overlook the fact that the Governors lost to East Tennessee State just one week prior (and that ETSU had just lost to VMI one week prior to that). It is hard to argue that ETSU is a great win (or loss in the case of Austin Peay), if you also argue that VMI is trash (which was argued as a reason for ETSU to not be considered in a GOTW). This (ETSU) is also the reason I did not move Furman.
Samford appears to be decent, despite opening losses to Youngstown State and Tennessee Tech. Had to give Samford credit for beating The Citadel, which I might remind you beat a P5 team and only lost to Towson and Elon by one score also.
Houston Baptist is on my list after watching Southeast Louisiana play Northwestern State this past weekend (17-17 at the half). The fact that HBU took care of Northwestern State in a comparable (or better fashion) than the Lions did earned stock for me, despite the fact that their last two victories were against teams a combined 0-7 (0-9 after playing them).
Notice, I am only arguing the bottom 5-6 teams. Just wanted to make small cases for teams I feel are in the Top 25, yet overall are just missing that cut. However, I am pretty impressed at the agreement by voters on most of the Top 15.

To be fair to Peay, I honestly think ETSU caught them looking ahead to us.

I don't think ETSU is as bad as their VMI loss. Austin Peay is the real deal. They run the ball and play good defense. If they keep it together and make the playoffs I could see them winning a game or two.

Just ask UCA how good Austin Peay is.

UC-Davis appears torched over losing in their post-NDSU near win. As a team that plays NDSU a lot, there is a frequent hang-over impact in the next game. Hopefully, UC-Davis will get it back together for a decent run forward. Peay totally dominated JSU. 'Cocks looked totally limp, and Peay hosed them down good. The Samford/Citadel game was a slugfest/coin flip. Really can't vote for one without voting for the other in near proximity. Dukes extinguished Phoenix. Doubt we'll see ELON flame up enough to make play-offs. If YSU can go .500 in MVFC play, bet you'll see then in the post-season.

If Peay was looking ahead to JSU that is their own fault and it counts as much as any other game. You want to try to win your conference but if not, get an at-large.. I have no sympathy for the "we were looking ahead' claims. it ain't baseball with 162 games. if you can't get up for only 11 games then you don't deserve anything. Not saying you win all 11 - not at all. But if you can't get pumped for just 11 games after all spring and fall practice and weight lifting I have NO sympathy for 'em. Think of those hundreds of hours of practice. 100s! and for a team to come and 'look ahead'. no excuse for that

Furman > ETSU > APy

despite my SoCon leanings I am serious about the 'looking ahead' stuff. If someone says Furman lost because we were 'looking ahead' we deserve to lose and it counts as much as any other loss. Injuries I will listen to like if you guys lost Cooper at QB and were on QB 3 etc.. etc.. that kills FCS teams as the depth isn't the same as FBS. but looking ahead? NO ONE should do that

I agree. I don't understand the love for MSU. Especially over Weber State.

Eh, their resume isn't really any worse than the other borderline top-25 teams. The Dayton loss was bad, but the EKU win was pretty good… or, at least, EKU is supposed to be a pretty good team.

Yet 98% of teams lay at least one egg each year .. they're called trap games or bad days. They happen to everyone.

Furman beating ETSU by 7 at home does not support your case any futher about being a top 8 seed. In fact, it further supports notion you might again be a bubble team this year. The VA Tech quality win doesn't look as good any more. And The GA St game was one a top 8 seed should win.

Yes, winning is important, but more telling are quality wins and quality losses .. as for last week's win, ETSU is 2-3 against the 71st ranked SOS and they lost to 1-3 VMI, who lost to 1-4 Rob Morris ... both currently winless if not for the win cited, and perenially bad teams.

I said exact same thing for my ISUr after we beat EIU 21-3 two weeks ago .. it was a weak win and did not help our case.. In fact, it hurt our resume.

Yeah, JSU did look like a D2 or worse team against the Govs. Maybe it should be pointed out, however, that they did basically this very same thing last year. It was NCA&T then SEMO. Then they came back and won enough to make to make the Playoffs. I just wonder if they will be able to do the same this year? Are they not about as good a team? Just curious.

I have them at 7 in my poll, but behind both Weber and Montana. My thoughts are pretty simple:
- They've beat the teams they were supposed to beat.
- They are undefeated against FCS play.
- They have won impressively at home (NAU game started out iffy, but they rebounded nicely for a 3 score win).
- They went to a tough place (Macomb is not easy to get to) and won by 2 scores.
- Who else is gonna be above them? Furman almost fits that description. UCA's resume got better after APSU beat JSU, but the 1 point home win against ACU kept them out of the top 10 for me.

Interesting to me is that this needs to be pointed out on a website literally called.... ANY GIVEN SATURDAY.

True. On the same note ETSU beat AustinP who beat JSU and more than that AustinP May be class of OVC.

So maybe Furman beating ETSU is a good win. Hard to,tell. I mean you have to factor in the one thing I always allow for. INJURIES. ETSU was missing 2 of their best 4 D players when they lost to VMI. And they were still out vs Austin Peay yet the OVC list that one. Then these two guys finally get back v Furman (one May play on Sunday). That is a different ETSU D we played.

Anyway, Wofford May beat ETSU but I bet it’s low scoring now

as is usally the case, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle .. but it sure feels like ETSU is closer to bottom than top. ETSU had the weakest 7 wins I've ever seen in FCS just last year ... by weakest I'm referring to FCS teams playing in the non-1 bid conferences.

Nope, in 2017 the highest they got was 28th (3rd in the ORV) in the week 12 (Selection Sunday) poll. That would've put them as the 4th best team out of the playoffs according to AGS. They actually got closer this year getting to 27th in week 3 but then they fell off completely after losing to ETSU only to vault back up after dismantling JSU.

I don't deny that. 6 wins by 16 points total was astounding. they beat VMI by 3.. Furman by 2 (who would later beat VMI by 30+ or something), Chatt by 3.. Citadel by 3 , Western by 2 in OT, Mercer by 3... this was one case where a 'win is a win is a win' BUT maybe... it just didnt' make any sense. I have trouble thinking of another team eeking out so many wins in such a weird fashion. I agree

Redbird, I also agree the answer to most questions is in the middle. You aren't as good as you think you are when you win. you aren't as bad as you think you are when you lose

right, but good teams put away almost all bad teams. Again, my ISUr beat EIU by 18 2 weeks ago .. more than the combined margin on the 6 ETSU games last year. And at the time I said EIU was a weak win, not a quality win ... and so it should have hurt our case for moving up in rankings because we should have won by more than 3 TDs, certainly 4 TDs would have been more appropriate margin for a top 15 team playing EIU .. even on road as it was.

FYI, our QB threw for 31 yards that game (11 passes) against EIU .. a week later, he threw for 415 yards (33 passes) against NAU.

I 100% agree. Perhaps I am missing something but here is the results for Montana State so far.

For people that have MSU ranked in the top 10 or higher what are your thoughts on the Bobcats?

The SEMO win isn't as good as it seemed.

Why isn't the SEMO win as good as it seemed? MSU is 4-1, undefeated against FCS. Their wins haven't really been that close. They were in the playoffs last year and returned something like 18 starters. I was kind of shocked that went down 21-0 to NAU, but then they kicked the snot out of them the rest of the game. I seem to remember NDSU going down 14-0 to UNI last year and still went undefeated. Just from watching them play, I think they are a legit contender.

I'm with you! I think MSU is a legit contender. I never bought in during the Ash years. This new version of the Bobcats seems like they're able to step up and take care of business. 98% of FCS wants no part of going into Bozeman in December and trying to win.

Ash wasn't aware there is more to the game of football than offense. I'm pretty sure he sent out 8 fans from the stands out on defense.

I don't think Montana State's SOS or wins are that different from a number of other teams ranked in the same range. I'm not going to compare and contrast everyone's wins, but I think there are a number of teams you could ask that about.

same w me for Furman. I am fully prepared to lose to Samford and aim for 8-4 or 9-3 and playoffs (which is likely we are 0-2 vs Sam and 2-0 vs Citadel -it's a matchup thing). some of us Furman fans are very fair and logical

MSU and I are on the same page w karma etc. He even told me he was impressed Furman got to playoffs in 2017 in v first year of new coach (coming off a 3-8 2016 campaign that Hendrix inherited!) as it took the MSU coach 3 years to get in playoffs which is great as it is all about trajectory long-term. LONG TERM is all that matters as football is a tough sport to change in a year or two.

You mean the kid who was 16 of 30 for 149 yards and no TD? Yeah, we left him there. But not accidentally. I kid, I kid. Bauman was acceptable as a game manager. He'll get ya 150 yards, no TD but no INT either. Rovig looked good against Norfolk State (not the best measuring stick) and then stunk last week against NAU.

If we had someone who could reliably complete 60% of his passes, we'd be a strong contender for the Big Sky championship and a seed. What's amazing to me is how we rack up 340 yards in a game when the defense KNOWS what's coming. What's flabbergasting to me is that we can't use the fact that we run the ball 80% of the time to sneak in some play-action passes. I'm thinking the receivers are harboring some Adam Thielen-type sentiments toward the QB position....
