Good to see Towson got into the tourney, despite it's loss to Delaware in the CAA championship...

Hope one of the CAA teams makes it one game further than UMass did last year...

Towson doesn't deserve to be in, they haven't played a complete game yet, and I am not very optimistic with their draw against undefeated Cornell. Only 5 seniors on the team so this could be a good learning year.
And while it IS Delaware, I'm still glad to see 2 CAA teams make the post season.

GO TIGERS!

Yes.
I am pretty sure there are 4 conference champs that get spots. ACC, CAA, AE and Patriot(?). Not sure about that last one. But the ACC, CAA and AE are definate AQ leagues. Maybe Ivy too? I'll do a little research. xcoffeex

Apparently the MAAC gets and AQ as well.

So we have ACC, CAA, AE, PL, IL, MAAC. 6 auto bids.

Not sure about the accuracy of the records stated on the NCAA page. Towson is 9-6, not 8-6. Not that it matters.

BTW, SIX teams from Maryland! xnodx

I'd much rather play the Twerps again. The same revenge factor for the Tigers as the Blue Hens had playing us in the CAA finals.
Undefeated Cornell scares me a bit.

2 AEast teams also. The brackets are a bit wierd this year. Not so sure Albany deserved a #5 seed and I think Cornell deserved higher than a #4. But apparently an upstate NY rep in the Semifinals was what the committee was attempting to do. Who knows.

It's wierd because there is no Syracuse!

I didn't notice the bracketing, it is Baltimore vs Upstate New York for a final four bid!

Seven conferences get autobids:
America East Conference (Albany), Colonial Athletic Association (Delaware), Eastern College Athletic Conference (Georgetown ), Great Western Lacrosse League (Notre Dame), Ivy League (Cornell), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Providence) and Patriot League (Navy).

Here in Baltimore, we get at least on game broadcast on Saturday afternoons sopmetimes one in the evening too if the O's aren't playing. ABC-2 does a very good job promoting the local college sports scene. They usually do the Towson MorganSt football game, local basketball and then go crazy when lacrosse starts up. Hopkins, Maryland, Navy, Towson, Loyola and UMBC all get at least one game on tv over the course of the season.

No problem. I didn't think they'd get far. Cornell was nice ! They have to serious shooters that can flat out launch the ball from 25-30 yards out.

Delaware's win made me smile. I can't stand UVa. Congrats to the "home" victory 89hen! Then UMBC upsets the Twerps! Meaning UD or UMBC will make the final four! Then its just another upset win over Duke/Georgetown to get to the finals. Far fetched? Maybe. But I still remember 1991! xthumbsupx

UD only lost to G'town earlier in the year by a goal - of course, the Hens also got beat pretty handidly by Duke. But at this point, who knows!?!!? A hot team could do it since I don't think there's all that much difference between the top teams in men's lacrosse - nobody is that much better than anyone else at this stage.

Alex Smith might be the best college lacrosse face off man ever. He holds the NCAA record for face offs won and face offs taken. He has won over 73% of his face offs this year. He also leads in ground balls per game this year.

I don't think so. The top 8 teams are given home field advantage in the first round. The second round game is played at a pre-determined location, Princeton and USNA. What use would it be to regionalize it if both teams are traveling in the second round.

Yeah, I'm eating some crow about Delaware. The Cavaliers clearly were not anything close to last year's squad...oh well, that's what happens when you graduate arguably the best attacker, best midfielder, and best defender in the country, as well as a lot of other important players. Not too bad that UVA was given the #2 slot in the tournament considering this fact. Oh well.

This isn't particularly rough for UVA fans, as the men's tennis team (in NCAA semis), the baseball team (maybe this year the squad can get all the way to the CWS), and the women's lacrosse team (in NCAA semis) are still going places.

I'd like either Delaware or Hopkins to win it all.
I'm a homer and we beat both this year.

I'm actually rooting for Duke in both because especially in men, I want them to take the trophy down to the soon ex DA's office and tell him where to stick it.

Also: Did you see Duke's trying to get last year considered a redshirt year for the players? What do you think of that?

seems like a good idea. good to see them come back strong. don't care for duke, or lacrosse, but it's a good story.

Todays total is up over 47,000!
70,000 is a bit out of the question, but I bet it gets up to close to 52-53K. NB for a "niche" sport!
It's supposed to be sunny and low 80's.

The NCAA men's lacrosse championship game was held at Delaware in 1984 (Hopkins 13-10 over Syracuse) and 1986 (North Carolina 10-9 over Virginia).

Edit: the Hen women also won the NCAA National lacrosse championship in 1983.

I don't care if Lacrosse is a "niche" sport, winning a national championship in front of 50K+ people is a fantastic experience.

Couldn't help but feel that a similar weekend for FCS, D-II and D-III Football would be an equally successful endeavor! Sure would make our championship weekend more of a draw for people to make a trip so close to the Holidays.

I had never watched an LAX game prior to today, but I found it quite entertaining. Great game between JHU and Duke. I'm also not much of a Duke fan, but it was inspiring watching them get that far in light of all the crap that the team has gone through.

Congrats JHU! Well done.

Great games this weekend! Delaware played Hopkins tough for all but a 5 goal spree in the 3rd quarter. But scoring in quick bunches is what they do. I was really pulling for Cornell, I liked their team alot. JHU vs Duke! Who to root against? Ugh!

It'll be interesting to see how Boston does with the tournament next year. That's a long way North for the average lax fan. Long Island is going to have to represent strong to get up to Baltimore and Philly's attendance numbers.

I agree with that wholeheartedly... we did the semis in Philly the last 2 years, but the fact that Baltimore was an extra hour or so and required an overnight stay was a deal killer for us. Boston is looking like a no go already...

Boston signed up for it. I don't think they'll come close to 40,000, but who knows?

Phill and Baltimore are nice central locations in the lacrosse region. Maybe even the Meadowlands, but there isn't anything to do there like in Baltimore. Is "The Linc" near Center City in Philly or is it down where The Vet used to be? Baltimore's stadium is within walking distance of the Inner Harbor which is a big pull for between games.

"The Linc" is close to the old Vet, but on the other side of Pattison Avenue from Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia doesn't have attractions within walking distance of the stadium, but there is a subway line nearby.

The Meadowlands is 8 miles from NYC, so there's plenty to do there ...

You can't walk from the Linc to Center City, but its about a 3 minute drive.

Boston I just don't get. Plus its in Foxboro... at least 30 minutes from Boston...

The Linc is where the Vet was, basically, so nothing is within walking distance. But of course, getting in a car isn't that hard to do, so the attendance was pretty good in Philly even without an Inner Harbor.

Boston's going to be tough though - lacrosse just isn't as feverent up there as it is in the Mid-Atlantic region - the further you get away from Maryland the weaker the interest is. It would be good for the tourney if Syracuse returns to form - at least you might get some more New Yorkers then.

Not to derail this thread, but are Baltimore and Philly sharing the Army Navy game? I saw that we have the game down here this fall? I remember going downtown the morning before to see all the Army stuff and Naval ships last time it was down here after the Vet was torn down.

Baltimore gets the game this year and Philly next year - that was part of the 5 year contract that ends in 2008 that saw Philly get 4 games and Baltimore get one. I read somewhere else too that Philly will get the 2009 game. The USNA athletic director has said that going forward he'd like to see Philly remain as the anchor (no pun intended I'm sure) location for the game, but they have looked into even holding it througout the country. The last contract included bids from all over, including Chicago, LA, Boston, and New York. Philly will continue to get the lion share of games, for both history as well as its central location between the two, but it will be spread around every now and then.
