CCU signs Bennett to long term contract

CONWAY | David Bennett has the groundwork to remain the football coach at Coastal Carolina for a long time.

On Friday, Bennett signed a 10-year contract that will pay him a base salary of $160,000 annually beginning May 16. That figure does not include bonuses that could reach $54,000 each year, television and radio deals worth $21,000 annually and the profits from his summer football camp.

Additionally, on Jan. 1 of each year beginning in 2008, Bennett will receive an 8 percent raise.

What kind of escape clause does the contract contain? Hopefully David will be around for all 10 of those years and more. One of my favorite coaches to deal with.

Supposedly we'll know more tomorrow, but according to the article if he leaves for another FCS (or lower?) school then he owes 100% of the remaining contract. But he can leave for an FBS school with no penalty. If CCU fires him in years 1-5 then they owe him 100% of remaining contract, years 6-10 then 50% of remaining contract.

Seems that all parties are putting a lot of faith into eachother.

I'm glad it gives him room to grow by not penalizing to go to a FBS program, puts him in a more competitive salary range, should stop him from flirting with FCS programs, and gives the school some leverage which seems to be lacking in many FCS contracts.

Good move. There was always the chance he defects to another FCS program which would not have been good for the chants.

hah! it will be interesting to see how the tape situation is handled this year. We've had a number of our games last year on TV so it wouldn't be hard to get copies anyway.
