Here's this week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-3-top-25-results-2/
I'm kind of surprised to see Central Arkansas as high as they are. I'm guilty of it too since I had them at #7 last week but I dropped them after a pretty uninspiring win against an ACU team that only garnered 10 votes in this poll yet it didn't seem to hurt them in the consensus.
On the other side of the SLC spectrum I think Southeastern Louisiana is pretty underrated at #19. Have people already forgotten how they dump trucked now #16 ranked JSU in week 1???
I also think Austin Peay should be in the top 25. They're close obviously but I was impressed with their win at Mercer this week and they hung right with Central Arkansas the week before that.

Something else I noticed. 9 of 13 Big Sky teams (or 10 of 14 if you want to include UND since they're still playing a Big Sky schedule) are ranked or in the ORV this week. The Big Sky is shaping up to have some nice depth this year even though it may not be as strong at the top as it was last year.

Great job as usual, voters!
Surprised as a Big Sky person to see all the conference representation. For Portland State and Cal Poly to move up after their "performances" last week is surprising, as well as Montana moving up one spot. Seeing PSU and Poly in ORV make me think Idaho should have received some consideration.
But I am nitpicking. It does look great overall.

Some of those teams at the very bottom of the ORV are just moving up because other teams are falling out I think. In the preseason and week 1 polls a team needed 29 points to crack the ORV, last week it was 16 points, and now this week it's 10 points. So teams like NAU and Cal Poly are probably just popping up because of other teams above them falling off and those votes/points are going to teams further up.

They only lost 4 points from last week. It was just that SELA and YSU picked up about 350 points each to hop over them (and JSU picked up about 650).

Nice. I'd have UCA in the top 15 somewhere. It really doesn't matter. 3-0 with another FBS team on the way so likely a loss. But a solid top 15 anywhere.

Yes - almost by default. NAU is 2-1, with FBS loss, so that is something to consider voting for, given how badly the bottom teams did.
NAU has a chance this Saturday to make noise in the poll, or drop completely, when they travel to Normal to play the Redbirds.

I have yet to vote for my Villanova Wildcats. They are 3-0 with wins over 3 PL teams that have a combined record of 0-9. They beat Towson or play a competitive game then I will move them into the top half if they win & lower half if they play a competitive game.
I voted Delaware in the 20s despite my disdain for their once great program although I don’t believe they will beat Nova this season like 12 of the last 13. xlolxxpeacex

Well A&T did get curb stomped by Duke and squeaked by a weak Charleston Southern team. The voting is not based on just one game, but it is on your completed schedule. Looking at the 3 games A&T have played I am not too surprised that they did drop.
How the teams around you in the rankings perform can also affect your position in the polling.

ACU is definitely a team on the rise. Their last 3 weeks of conference play will tell a lot about them (Nicholls, SHSU, SLU). Glad to see they are receiving votes. They should slide up the rankings until late October/November, and then it all depends what they do against those three teams.
I think SLU is ranked way too low. Of all the teams UCA has left, they scare me the most.
The only thing helping UCA is the win over an FBS (my guess). While we could win this week, it is doubtful. 3-1 heading into the heart of conference play (with a bye week) should help them long term, hopefully starting with the offensive line.

Well, here is my JV Coaches' Poll Caliber Garbage. That said, let's make sure we don't kick ourselves in the a** with our knee-jerk movements of teams up or down (or push in all our chips for this team beat that team, who beat this other team, therefore this team should be ranked above both).
Southeastern Louisiana's victory over Jacksonville State was impressive, but so was Jacksonville State's comeback victory over Eastern Washington and their definitive win over Chattanooga last week. If the Lions had played their second game and had not lost to the team predicted to finish second-to-last in the SEC (only ahead of every AGS member's favorite SEC team, Vanderbilt), I might have had the same (extreme?) knee-jerk, but Southeastern Louisiana will have to wait at least another week to surpass either Jacksonville State or Eastern Washington for this voter. I did, however, move Southeastern Louisiana up as the best Southland team, and I will be curious to see if this will hold true for the remainder of the season.
Enjoy!

I gave the Griz credit for a comfortable win over USD in Vermillion in week 1 but that has since turned out to be fairly unimpressive now that it looks like USD may go 0-12 this season so I haven't given them much traction to move up in my ballot.

You might be.
This appears to be an example of Montana > North Alabama > Western Illinois <= Montana State? If Montana had beaten somebody thus far (South Dakota does not count much due to loss by Houston Baptist and North Alabama does not count much due to loss to Alabama A&M), I could get on board. A win over Monmouth will probably not tip the scale for me, unless Montana State takes a dump against Norfolk State.

Then again, as I told ursus when I submitted my poll preseason I probably am higher on Montana than anyone else coming into the season
They haven't really don much to "move up" but they haven't done anything to make me rethink them either.
I'd have to go back and look but I think you had UM the highest of all voters.

Three teams I am a bit leery of right now based on results are South Dakota State, Montana and Davis. SDSU has not looked very good at all vs their two FCS doormats and Davis hasn't lived up to the hype, either. Should've lost to San Diego.
Montana beat a now-terrible USD team 31-17 and then was down by 1 at half with UNA at home before blowing it open. Need to see more from all three.

I do not vote, but I see UM as possibly being better then Montana State. I have no problem with that assessment. UM has looked pretty good thus far and MSU struggled in its win against W. Ill. and the game against Texas Tech does not look as good now that TT lost to Arizona

It's early in the year, so there's room for movement, but both Griz wins are losing their luster. Then again, the same can be said for the Bobcats. We know tUNA and USD are bad and we know WUI is bad. SEMO, a playoff team from last year, is currently just outside the top 25. Since they're playing down this week, it'll be at least 2 weeks before we learn anything new about them, and possibly not for 3 when they play what appears to be a good Austin Peay team on the road. I will admit I came away impressed with the Griz's performance against the Ducks, so I wouldn't have an issue with them currently being ranked above MSU. If I did a poll, I'd have us slightly ahead of them, but not in the top 10 where they ended up. (Voters really hammered Maine for getting doubled up by a top 10 Towson!)

The third worst team in the best division in college football is still better than most FCS teams not named North Dakota State.

BTW, to me UM and MSU are looking very equivalent as a product on the field with several key differences that could make either one superior at any time but they really do very even to me. Both teams have done some good work on the lines and that should make them both better throughout season.

Very cool to see. I'm preaching to the choir but seeing more and more people come around to opinions like these just underscores how critical discussion improves polls. We get that here whereas I don't think coach's poll voters or (most) STATS poll voters get that. I don't think we're any more knowledgeable than those guys are but when you're forced to rationalize your placement of teams week in week out the curtains get pulled back on your personal tendencies and biases allowing voters to lessen or eliminate them making the consensus the best it can be.

You beat me to it. We do a solid job of ensuring those who vote and post their polls, defend their position as to why they had a team where they did. We all make mistakes (and generally they are offset by the group as a whole) but when it becomes repeated mistakes, the biases are called out for what they are. I know I have had teams "out of place" but if I refuse to either defend or admit it was an oversight, I deserve to be called out for it.

So moral victory then? (sarcasm)
Here's a more serious question: You clearly think Southeastern Louisiana is better than the Gamecocks, but are the Gamecocks truly better than Eastern Washington? Was it a lucky win against EWU? If so, how does EWU matchup with the Lions? Are the Lions a seed, because that is what you seem to indicate with your original statement and follow-ups. I don't think I am ready to "crown their a**es" just yet.
I don't think it is anywhere near definitive that Southeastern Louisiana is better than Eastern Washington, and I am not even sure Jacksonville State is better than Eastern Washington (although I did vote that way...barely). If all are within a few spots of one another near the mid-to-upper end of the poll, than that is probably about the best one can do, IMO. Order at this point seems pretty arbitrary with only 2-3 games played.

Take away JSU's special team mistakes in Q1 and I think JSU wins that game in a much more convincing fashion.
I think if EWU and JSU play 10 times you'd probably see one team or the other win 6 of 10 at most. That's why I have them so close in my poll.
EWU is a secondary away from being a title threat.
As far as SELA is concerned, they got talent and the coaches got them looking pretty good, especially on defense.
Worthy of Note: SELA threw 3 picks and a fumble against Ole Miss. Take away 2 of those and SELA probably gets out of Oxford with a dub.

Take away the pick 6 Barriere threw and the punt EWU got blocked giving JSU a 12 yard field and JSU never would've even had a chance to win that game. I think EWU wins 7 times out of 10 times on a neutral field and probably 8 of 10 on the red turf. I could be wrong but I felt like JSU stole that game last Saturday. It proved to me that they were better than the #20-#25 tier I had them at but I still think EWU should be ranked higher of the two.

Beat me to it. Every game has miscues. Thing like KO returns for TD's, fumbles and INTs are one team outperforming the other on that specific play. (Unless you're Kirk Cousins throwing a ****ing INT into triple coverage off your back foot in the end zone on first down. That's cuz you're a dumb ****.) Unforced errors on routine plays, like a punter muffing a clean snap and then not falling on it or kicking it OB have slightly more of a case of "if X didn't happen" but even then, mental miscues are also part of the game and are irrelevant other than for awarding moral victories. This is why the "better team" often loses.

But my point is despite their mistakes in that game SELA still hung with them. That to me is impressive.
In addition to four turnovers, we gave up a kickoff return for a TD and we misfired on three wide open receivers that likely would have gone for touchdowns. Ole Miss rushed for 220 yards on 50 carries, but 133 of the yards came on four carries. The other 46 carries netted 87 yards.

Oh it wouldn't surprise me if they finish top 5. I think EWU is a good team.
But I think it's funny you sit there and preach at me about a game being 4 quarters and then give JSU exactly no credit for playing 4 quarters.

Also, maybe USD is better than anyone is giving them credit for. Sure they lost to UCD by close score, but does this mean that UCD isn't very good or USD is better than anyone is giving them credit? After all, they are picked to win their conference. And, doesn't winning count more than losing a close game?
UCD beat what maybe is a very good USD team.

Looking at the Massey composite nobody is higher on Furman than AGS. I think you can make a solid argument they deserve 20-25 but not as high as they’re getting ranked.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Have you seen them play? Just curious. The Va Tech game is on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3pO_fIHhHc I watched two of their games now and am not looking forward to our game. The plain Massey is a good data point, but it has some inherent flaws early in the season. As do most computer ratings. Actually one in the composite has Furman at 7 another 15 and one at 16. Close.
Some of the ratings that make up the composite are a serious joke. One has Cent Ark 4 while another has them at 40. Another has Montana #2 and another at 28. Another has Princeton #2. Those all might be true but there are weird rankings in there. They get smoothed out by the better polls, but I have never liked the composite.

I do not vote, but I see UM as possibly being better then Montana State. I have no problem with that assessment. UM has looked pretty good thus far and MSU struggled in its win against W. Ill. and the game against Texas Tech does not look as good now that TT lost to Arizona
It's hard to know at this point, I just saw some serious playmakers for Montana vs S Dak, watched a bit of Montana St vs W Illinois and I just didn't see that much in the snapshot I watched.... not fair i know

My apologies for what I am about to point out (as I don't mean this to be malicious in any way, more of a curiosity).
I'll admit that the discussion about Southeastern Louisiana>Jacksonville State>=Eastern Washington, and the implication that others that don't believe this are JV pollsters, stuck in my craw a bit. Then I recalled that the Elon Phoenix beat The Citadel Bulldogs (by the same margin that Towson did, I might add), yet are 10 spots below them at 25 (just cracking the top 25) in your poll.
Kudos for posting your poll (I appreciate it), but I am just wondering how one can vehemently argue for one situation while doing the opposite for the other situation. No worries, just caught my eye.

The jury's still somewhat out for MSU, and pretty much totally out for UM. The Bobcats did better than I expected against SEMO, but they did worse than I expected against Texas Tech. I picked the Griz to go 6-6, and nothing I've seen would change my mind on that so far. Montana's WR corps is deadly, but the RB corps is probably the weakest it's been since the Don Read days. UM's lack of a pass rush also figures to be a huge problem in Big Sky play.

My only issue with Elon is the NC A&T loss.
I think El Cid's GT win merits a jumping despite the head to head. I had El Cid just below Elon last week.
Also to set the record straight, I don't have a big issue with EWU being a couple spots ahead of JSU. I do have an issue with EWU being 17 spots ahead of JSU.
I also have issue with JSU being over SELA under any circumstance. Despite what a lot of people think, that game wasn't a fluke. A lot of our issues were directly because SELA was whipping us all over the field.

EWU was in the championship game last year and has the pedigree of finishing the season near the top. A close road loss to another top 25 team is not an unreasonable result for even a top team in the country.
I’ve done the poll long enough that I’ve seen this time and time again where a top team takes a loss they fall imo too far and slowly get worked back up the poll. I’m just not going to drop them as far as the rest do. Imo EWU will slide back up to where I have them. Time will tell.

Yeah some of the puter rankings are suspect . I like to look at Massey, Sagarin, and the composite. If all three have a team higher or lower then me I’ll re-evaluate where I have them. For Furman they are low in Massey but in iirc 20/25 range in the other two. I may consider them for that region but as high as they are in our poll, I think is too high.

Pretty entertaining contest down in Jacksonville...put the game on the red grass and I think EWU holds on to win. The home field effect keeps JSU behind EWU this week; if EWU doesn't do something about their defense, they may struggle to get deep in the playoffs, especially if they have to go on the road.

APSU was my #26 this week.
Re: SELA, they came in at #24 in my poll this week. I don't put too much stock in week 1 results (especially in OOC matchups) because we just don't know enough about the teams. The only thing I've learned about JMU this year is that they've got a really good front seven on D. A&T beat JSU last year in Week 0. Which team, irrespective of playoff performance, was better last year? I think it was JSU. I think JSU is better than SELA this year. I think SELA has some room to grow. The SLC looks storng this year and SELA has plenty opportunity to climb the polls.

Ole Miss right now is kind of like Vandy -- SEC because it's stitched onto their jerseys. Glad they were competitive. I remember once when JMU beat #13 Virginia Tech to go to 2-0. People pumped JMU up as a contender to make a deep run, maybe even make it as far as the championship game. They had to win their last 2 to finish over .500 that year. I choose to let the season play out a bit. If SELA goes on to finish top 2 in the SLC I fully expect I'll rank them higher than where they are now.

I am sure they will be fine because they have a ton of talent but something is off right now when watching them (bits and pieces) and following box scores. To give up 289 yards to Drake is a bit concerning - that is a bad football team. Not having Gibbs and having Eck as the new OC is probably giving them some growing pains.

Something looks pretty off with them right now though. Gibbs may/probably fixes most of it.
Honestly, even that Minnesota win and Gibbs line from that game I've started to wonder as the season has gone on
There was another level of energy from SDSU that night that we haven't seen even half matched. I'm not going to say "super bowl" type game but it's clear they pulled out almost every stop and whatever else on their game plan.
Minnesota has not looked great. Yes they are 3-0 but it's a double OT win over Fresno and a last 30 second win over Georgia Southern. They haven't exactly been amazing
Gibbs also completed just 50% of his passes against Minnesota. He's clearly better than anyone else SDSU has right now but I still have questions as he made some real bad freshman mistakes in that game. He will grow from them but he is still a freshman.
Maybe I'm too harsh. Maybe others are overlooking issues and not being harsh enough because of the name.

SDSU hasn't beaten anybody either, outside of the Gophers, they must have one of the softest OOC schedule here but they are up there in the poll, should we drop their asses as well. They had Drake, some college I have literally never heard of and Southern Utah this weekend. It don't get much better than that.
I don't normally drop teams for their scheduling.
You can only play who is in front of you.
I dropped SDSU a couple of spots this week because of the QB situation.

Then does the MSU-WIU game prove that MSU is on the downswing and WIU on the upswing? It sure as hell didn't indicate that MSU is on the upswing.....
No, you're doing it wrong! You have to jump through enough mental hoops to convince yourself that MSU is doing better than UM, and I have to do the reverse. That is the nature of this rivalry.

Doesn't take much for me to think MSU is light years ahead of UM, in more ways than just football. xrulesx Luckily, I read an article where Choate told me that Macomb is IMPOSSIBLE for an OOC to win at (12 years, no home OOC loss I think he said! The Griz would know.... they lost there just last year :D), so the WIU win actually means we're on a YUGE upswing. In fact, we've cancelled the rest of the FCS season and taking the place of the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. The footprint of the Big Sky got a wee bit bigger....

I don't drop for who you play, per se.
I use the hated eye test in those cases.
How do you perform vs how I expect you should perform vs that team
Let's use SDSU for example - since I admitted I dropped them 10 spots the last 2 week after they've won 38-10 and 38-3
Two blow out wins that were never "really" in doubt. How can i move someone down for that?
I expected them to win by that margin, or more. So the size of the win does nothing for me
However, I watch SDSU play and they didn't look like a team where I had them. The scoring margin was "right" but the game didn't "play" the way the score did. As i said, there are reasons for that. Some think because of how out of hand APB got last year that Stig/Eck are intentionally doing the opposite to avoid it this year. They are also missing Gibbs. SDSU without Gibbs is not nearly as good as SDSU with Gibbs. SDSU with Gibbs I had at #1. If SDSU has to continue without him (doesn't sound like that much longer (?) then they will move back up the ratings as my eyes will see what should be a top 3-5 team. I refuse to keep SDSU with my #1 vote, or top of the poll in general, simply because they are SDSU. Sorry, don't vote that way. There's a reason I moved EWU about 15 spots this week. I have had discussions with IBY, Rev, Thumper and Southerner about them and Rev brought up some pretty good points in past weeks, and what I saw during the JSU game when watched through the lens he gave me raised questions that I want to see answers for.
It's also never about just that team when i'm slotting it. Teams don't exist in a vacuum. Sure Team X might have met expectations for what they should have done and *could justify* moving up. But lets say teams in front of them also did the same and then a team behind them all of a sudden jumped out and crushed expectations and teams and looked the part. Sorry Team X, you just got jumped. It's nothing you did, it's what happened around you. I have no fear in moving teams up after a loss or down after a win.
Starting this week UNI is on "watch" with me because I have some real questions that need answered and if they aren't answered but they still win I will probably moved them back.

WIU is a tough place to play from what I've heard and seen out of my team when they've played there. You can't fly into there with a charter plane and there aren't any local hotels the can accommodate a full traveling D1 football team and support staff with the necessary meeting space from what I understand. So teams have to fly into the Quad Cities or Peoria, stay there the night before, and then bus the last hour or two to Macomb the morning of the game. On top of that there usually isn't a ton of energy in the stadium so it all leads to some lackadaisical performances from visiting teams.
You can call these excuses and they absolutely are but that doesn't mean they're not true.

Macomb and Terra Haute are tough places to play.
Not because the teams are overly good or anything
It's because they are middle of no where empty stadium spaces. Hard to get too and completely void of any signs of life during a game.
small town high school football games have more energy and life to feed off of than those two places.

Each of those points were literally brought up by Choate as to why it's a hard place to play. "Planes, trains and automobiles to get there", "Atmosphere's not great" - Choate. Also mentioned the hike to the locker room at half not really allowing time for adjustments.

I guess SDSU should have ran the score up to keep their spot in your poll. xlolx

Our defense ... for sure. Our run game, maybe top 10 or 15. But our pass game right now ... yikes.
I would still have us top 20 just based on our defense and run game. But until our pass game emerges, we are not top 10. Teams who can truly stop our run game will have their way with us as of right now. Maybe it gets better.

I can understand why some people are dropping them like rocks. Gibbs needs to come back. They look like a completely different team without him.
To be fair, some of that is they aren’t playing the style people are used to from SDSU either with Nelson playing qb. They’re using him as a game manager and just leaning on these teams with the run game. That said, I dropped them this week as well. Vanilla scheme or not, the intensity simply has not been there. The defense had it vs LIU, but both sides of the ball were lacking vs Drake. We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks.

I’m not even certain it’s the without Gibbs part. Watching the games I haven’t seen even 25% of the play calls from the Gopher game. Everything has been on autopilot and it needs to stop.
