In a nutshell, they won a NCAA small-college division regional NC over future NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw and his LA Tech Bulldogs 34-14, with a 10-0-1 record.

Why does the title of the thread say NATIONAL championship?

ETSU has never won a national championship in anything to my knowledge. The regional title is probably the closest thing. It would be interesting to see how well ETSU would have fared in a playoff system that year. Both polls in the college division that year had North Dakota State at the top of the pile, who then woodshedded Montana.
