The "keep it close but lose in the end" choice is standard for FCS-FBS matchups due to the difference in scholarships. Depth usually wins in the 4th quarter.

that is pretty amazing considering he is A) on the ROAD and B) AT AN FBS opponent - that's the kicker. Sometimes they give this to someone who lit up an easier FCS opponent. To win the award w 4TDs (and another running TD - so 5 TDs !) and 0 picks etc vs FBS is really something

Gotta feeling #4 is going to have a great career in Purple.

Nah...don’t think we’ll see any more option than we’ve seen to date; possibly less.

So Richmond got the last two in 2016 and 2011, as Pitt was still not in the ACC in 2012

Actually it was 8 years, 1985 through, and including the 1992 season. 12 FCS loses in 8 years...ouch. We had two of those scalps...including...wait for it, one in Charleston. One of the few FBS games played at an FCS school the last 30 some odd years. Pretty good. Also FYI, they lost two more times, in 2003 and 2007 to Delaware. So Delaware has 7 Navy scalps. They have 14 total 1AA/FCS loses since the split. They have obviously stepped up their game since their last loss in 07.
Delaware 1985
Delaware 1986
Lehigh and W&M 1987
The Citadel in Charleston 1988
The Citadel, Delaware, and JMU in 1989 (seriously bad losing to three FCS in one year)
JMU in 1990

though Duke is a totally different animal these days. they just KILLD NC A&T (top 20 FCS team) by about 30. I don't think they would fear anyone except top 5 maybe... Cutcliffe has done very well there.. funny story that UT asked him to come be their coach and he turned UT down to stay at Duke ! Duke just sent their QB to the NFL as the second pick? they are .500 ACC now. they used to be a 2-10 team now they are 6-6 easy

Has nothing to do with this game but George Quarles turned down offer (s) to join UT as well as other FBS schools.
This is another game to see how far Furman has come under CCH.
The offense played well enough to win at GSU, I will add the caveat that on a couple of drives Furman didn't play as big.
To have any chance of winning the DIN offense has to take advantage of every opportunity and grab every point.
I hope we see more from the Furman defense when they're not playing a video game offense.

Personal observations, but the GSU offense was a tough matchup for our defense. Brad Glenn's offenses are usually good, but they are also in hurry up mode for four quarters. That's a tough task when you are at a 20+ scholarship player disadvantage on a hot night. They've just got more bodies than we do.

PaladinFan, your point is a good one in that it's sort of the opposite of Samford right now. Both GSU and Samford play some hurry up or throw some.. so if it's clicking it wears the opposing defense down. GSU wore us down because they sustained those drives. If they miss a few throws or we get that O off the field their D begins to wear down because we run more and have longer TOP. I suspect that has happened to Samford in these first games - well, the YSU one at least.
gofurman
September 12th, 2019, 10:59 AM
Paladin fan knows his stuff and he knows this is why I went into that GSU game 'concerned':
- far more scholarships (as he said)
- in the HEAT.. intereseting note but someone once charted our success in September vs October vs FBS. We were much better in October when heat isn't so brutal on depth
- Western Carolina / GSU offense is a hurry up offense.. more wear on our depth (and this showed in second half)
- Western Carolina themselves shoulda/coulda beat Furman last year - that too was a shootout. And we got a few key turnovers. We just don't do well w mobile QBs and strong WRs. And we were able to hit Tyrie Adams - we couldn't get to the GSU QB. We blitzed very little in 'respect' for his mobility and when we did the GSU OL picked it up. We were able to hit Tyrie Adams but not the GSU QB
Furman strength - and I agree in principal - is running the ball and stopping the run. It works. Bobby Johnson did it and got us to the National Title game.. Hendrix has us improving a lot ! We may have just found a QB where our pass game is strong ... great kicker in All America Atkins. last piece to solve for us is pass D - against most FCS we can get a pass rush to help our CBs. couldn't get that vs GSU

I would imagine it is a difficult offense to prepare for. Furman runs the ball as well as the best running teams, and throws it as well as the best throwing teams.
Watching the team play live last week, I was impressed by how the offense operates. There are a lot of personnel changes, dozens of formations, and presnap shifts. The backs are fast physical runners and all of them can catch. It's a touch matchup for a defense.

before anyone takes the transitive property too far.. VT shoulda beat Boston College easily. VT had 5 turnovers and still only lost at BC by one score. Anytime you have 5 turnovers (and a neg 4 to ratio) you should get blown out. But VT stayed in the game anyway. That's remarkable. VT also had a neg 2 turnover ratio against ODU and still won easily as they got up 24-3. IE, they are better than their scores

VT is defending us differently than Georgia State did. State put 11 guys within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage, which allowed Furman to throw downfield.
Tech knows they have an advantage up front, they are dropping their DBs back and taking away the deep ball. Furmans struggling to win at the line of scrimmage. Just look outmanned up there.

Agreed. Incredibly liberal and ACC-friendly interpretation of that rule. Pretty bitter pill to swallow.
VT played well the 2nd half. Furman couldn't hit any of their big plays like they have the last 2 weeks. The few times Furman tried to be aggressive, VT was ready for it. 2 big drops (one of the last drive on the first half and one on an iffy potential PI call) didn't help either.
Tough one. Oh well. I think we got out mostly healthy though. Time to get ready for next week with Mercer. Can't let 2 close, tough losses cost you a 3rd one next week.

The called 5 for the block on 23. Which looking at it again, I guess technically he did, but 23 never even remotely makes a move towards the ball for a recovery. 23's first move is to the inside, away from where the ball is going. Crazy. Either way, that has probably happened on every onside kick since that rule was created. My guess is that's one of the few times it's ever been called.
The overturn aside. That onside kick is nasty. Takes a seriously hard left turn after looking like it's going dead straight 5 yards off the kick.

"The rich man busy dancing while the poor man pays the band".
Calls always heavily skewed to FBS. Will not change until Bernie makes college free.

Do you?
Cmon man. We were supposed to get KILLED - line closed at 24. We led both Georgia State (FBS) and VTech (FBS) at half. BOTH and then depth wore us down. 63 scholarships vs 85. take 15 redshirts and its roughly 70 players vs 50. we just wore down in both games - credit to the FBS GSU and VTech
but if the dam FCS voters (sure AGS guys here know) don't keep us top 15 or move us up they are idiots. 24-17 vs VTech? Hope SIDs don't just see Furman is 1-2 ...

All fair points, but my comment was just about whether you had the better team. I would have kept my mouth shut but FUGameBreaker always likes to troll so....
Also, I am not a poll voter but strong showings should be rewarded (does not however mean you were the better team).

I thought if nothing was called on the field, they could not look at replay and then make a call. You really had to be begging/looking for something to make that call even if it was reviewable which I don't think it was. Besides that the 2 players just sort of ran together there was no block. Even VPI fans said FU got hosed on that one.

better team did win. FUrman should be rewarded in polls for a FINE FINE FINE showing. Vs a 24 point ACC favorite we lost by a score w three freshman making their starts and a R-FR QB. we had freshman everywhere as we were missing a Senior CB.
I am objective - better team won. no doubt. Furman should hold or move up in polls no doubt.

Not a penalty. The VT blocker came out to initiate a block. The Furman player is allowed to attempt to avoid or defend himself from the block. Looks like he tried to avoid. These BS calls always come in as these officials' jobs depend on the good graces of their conference ADs. So letting one of your schools lose to an FCS team is not a good thing, but any complaint by the FCS programs against the FBS officials fall on deaf ears.

Nice game for Furman ... kudos for close VA Tech loss, but no kudos for close Georgia St loss ... they were 2-10 last year and ranked #123 by Massey. Top 20 teams should beat teams like Goergia St. VA Tech was tougher at 6-6 in ACC before losing bowl game to Cincy ... ranked #68 by Massey last year. So a quality loss, but not exactly a good FBS team ... at 6-6 ranked #68 ... that makes them average for FBS.

I am not sure what last year's records have to do with this year ranking or ratings. How each team progresses or regresses, this year, is already worth more after three games now. Georgia State knocked off UT on the road. They are a much better team this year and any reference to last year is pretty pointless. If they lose tonight I will buy it. I don't expect them to. I agree VaTech is an average team this year, so far.

This is a dumb take.
One of Georgia State's two wins last year was against Kennesaw State, the #4 seed in the FCS playoffs. This Georgia State team is better than the one last year.

This. Just facts. GSU won two games last year but when they played vs FCS that was one of the wins vs top 10 and seeded KSU ! So they were a top 5/10 FCS last year easily. They are arguably better this year having beaten Tennessee and Furman. They will probably double the win total of last year and last year they knocked off an FCS top 5 !

Georgia State sucks.
Kennesaw blew the game last year like they blew the Kent game this year.
Even Tennessee freaking State has a GSU scalp.

Too much generalization. Every year is different. Heck every game is different - you of ALL people ought to agree seeing JSU lose first game look bad and then win great today. You can’t generalize too much. If we did then you beat EWU and I guess that means the team that beat y’all first game is top three since JSU beat top 4 EWU and whoever beat y’all first week win by about 20. You just can’t generalize but so much.
GSU ain’t great but I’ve been around FCS since 91. They would be top 5 FCS this year. I mean Citadel is 0-2 in FCS and must suck and was a 33 point underdog to FBS GTech but wait ... they won! I guess we can say FBS is easier than FCS ...
look GSU isn’t a world beater in FBS but I promise you they are top 10 FCS level. Heck they are better than Vegas thought! OU on total season wins was 3.5 for GSU. They will eclipse that likely so even Vegas undervalued them $

Every game is a distinct entity. Georgia State beat Tennessee but was blown out yesterday by mighty Western Michigan 57-10. Syracuse was destroyed by a Maryland team that lost to Temple, but stayed close with Clemson for a half.
I’m not a big NFL fan, but at least they they have a completely objective mechanism for picking playoff participants.

Not a 45-10 clowning. Virginia Tech looks awful! They looked bad when I watched some of their game against ODU. Fuentes's seat has to be getting hot. Beamer and Vick were in the house tonight.

You are right. No one has kicked em like Duke did. Duke would win FCS title I think.
As a guy whose family is in Durham Duke is sooooo different at football than 10 years ago or prior to Cutcliffe. Only Spurrier and Cutcliffe succeeded at Duke. Fuente has to be feeling heat soon. I would think

Clowing in the sense that a team with 8k fans should have beaten the team with 60k fans, I knew Duke would take them down tonight, I also would not be surprised if Fuente is looking for a new job come December

I actually have an interesting question. If an FBS loses to an FCS, or gets a serious scare as in this case, I wonder if and how that affects the FBS team the remainder of the season. VA Tech looked bad and like they were going through the motions.
Look at Michigan in 2007. They fell off a cliff after losing to App. We're they really that bad or did losing contribute to the fall. Is it because scalped FBS were bad to begin with that they lost or does getting humbled by a lowly FCS add to the downfall by any degree. I may have to go look at the data to see if there is a trend. It will hard to determine, if not impossible. But it's got to take it out of the players, coaches and fans. I suspect it impacts P5 more than G5. The shock value is greater. As with all things, it probably lies somewhere in-between. Pretty bad, and shocked just makes it worse. VA Tech didn't lose to Furman, but they should have, and I am pretty sure they know it in Blacksburg.

The Michigan season was far shy of expectations before the App St game, but 9-4 with a bowl win over Florida is far from falling off a cliff. That said, I do know where you are coming from and wonder how much it impacts a team.

Reading their fan forum, most VT fans are down on the team and the state of the program. I think trailing Furman much of the game was a cold glass of water to the face of the fan base (who, pregame, thought they'd beat Furman by 40).
