34,544 saw NDSU beat Butler at Target Field.

37,355 saw St. Johns play St Thomas at Target Field in 2017. I would have guessed the Bison would have surpassed that. In any event, it's great the twin cities can draw that well at Target Field and I hope to see other big time games there in the future. I will be going to see SJU and UST again this year at Allianz Field, home of Minnesota United where a sold out crowd of over 20k is expected.

They would not open the 3rd deck in the outfield, which hindered the opportunities for that. However, had they played a rival or bigger opponent, I believe it would have passed that number. Then again, this game was more about brand exposure than anything.

I think they would've opened those seats had the demand been there but they were obstructed view so they didn't want to sell them until they needed to. But I agree that putting a higher quality opponent would've bumped it not just from additional Bison fans but from opposing fans as well. That 37.5k for Johnnies/Tommies was a pretty good split in the crowd. This game was not any kind of a split.

I am of the belief that if NDSU and SDSU/GFCC/UNI could do a 1-1-1 at US Bank, it would sell the lower bowl out (curtain off the upper deck) as well as suites.

Yeah that is terrible. Season opener against a big name and good quality opponent.

I wonder how many Grizzlies fans were there?

Dome construction...that's pretty much capacity right now (and for the entirety of the season, I believe). Next year it'll jump back up to around what it had been (~10k).

EDIT - from USD's website: "The seating capacity will go from 5,500 next season to 9,037 in 2020."

So it appears as though they didn't even sell out if the capacity was 5500 if they only got 5139.

Idk...do students get in free? And do they count them if they do? (we don't...not accurately anyway)

I would think they'd be able to get more people than that for a home opener against Montana, which makes me think they were actually at capacity and something is wonky with the counting...maybe?
I don't have any room to criticize (I'd be happy to just average 5k this season), just curious.

according to the stats, WIU only drew 4K when they hosted Montana last year (9/15/18). Maybe it was crappy weather, I can't remember. (or maybe WIU just has crappy attendance.)

As I said, I'd be happy just to average 5K this year. The answer to your query is a bit of both. WIU has really crappy attendance, and it also happened to be crazy hot (for us). Pretty humid, low 90's, sun was still mostly up. I remember specifically because I always sit on the east side stands next to our band. The sun is usually in your face from there, but generally it's not too bad (and it's great in the late season games)....but that game, anyone on the east side was roasting. I sat on the west side for that game.
