Thanks..makes sense, seems to happen every 5 years or so.

Can anyone confirm 2024?

Answering my own question :)....I was too lazy to check earlier, but it probably is 2024 unless the rule changes in the meantime.

2024 is the next calendar year with 13 Saturdays between Labor Day and Thanksgiving

Also I think 2025 will be another 12th game year. It seems to cycle for 2 years consecutively then a 5 year wait.

Just checked, you are correct. Good to know that formula...thanks!

I'm confused by my own words about a cycle.

Several years ago this was a thread here on AGS. Without calendar research, this is what was posted:
2013-2014 then 2019 2024-2025 then 2030-2031 then 2036 then 2041-2042 then 2047
At my age, this is far longer than my eyes will ever watch football.

The “extra” week is based on when Labor Day and Thanksgiving occur in a given year; the week occurs when the former is early and the latter is late. Due to the dates for each holiday (Labor Day is always on the 1st Monday of September, Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thursday of November), the extra week only occurs when the two holidays occur on September 1st/November 27th or September 2nd/November 28th.

You can figure out the dates for both holidays in future years by shifting the date back for each holiday by one day in normal years and two days in leap years, until you reach the beginning of each holiday’s “window”. As an example, here are the dates for the two holidays until 2030:

*2019: Monday 9/2 & Thursday 11/28
*2020: Monday 9/7 & Thursday 11/26
*2021: Monday 9/6 & Thursday 11/25
*2022: Monday 9/5 & Thursday 11/24
*2023: Monday 9/4 & Thursday 11/23
*2024: Monday 9/2 & Thursday 11/28
*2025: Monday 9/1 & Thursday 11/27
*2026: Monday 9/7 & Thursday 11/26
*2027: Monday 9/6 & Thursday 11/25
*2028: Monday 9/4 & Thursday 11/23
*2029: Monday 9/3 & Thursday 11/22
*2030: Monday 9/2 & Thursday 11/28

Assuming the college football schedule does not change, there will be 12 week schedules in 2019, 2024, 2025, and 2030 (and 2031).

One additional note - the absolute end date for the college football regular season is unofficially set by the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which prohibits NFL games from being televised on Friday nights and Saturdays from the second Friday in September until the 2nd Saturday in December if those games are played within 75 miles of a college football or high school football game. The latest the second Saturday in December can fall is on December 14th, which coincides with years in which Thanksgiving falls on November 28th.
