When former Payton Award winner Ricky Santos was named Associate Head Coach at UNH last March, we all assumed he would eventually end up replacing Coach Mac; unfortunately it is happening, at least on an interim basis, now. It's hard to express how much Coach McDonnell has meant to the entire athletic program, the University and really to all of FCS football. His former assistants and coordinators have gone on to successful careers through all levels of college football and the NFL. Through both his words and actions, the two time Eddie Robinson Award winner has set an outstanding example of integrity and sportsmanship while building ans sustaining a very successful program. But more importantly he has truly loved the University and each and every student athlete who has ever played the game of football for him. He has given up several opportunities to move to head coach positions at FBS programs to stay at his Alma mater.
At this point they have chosen not to announce the reason for his medical leave of absence, and the whole UNH community certainly respects their wishes. However, what ever the ailment, we all wish him a speedy and successful recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the Wildcat's sidelines!

Best wishes to Coach Mac for a speedy recovery and return.

Reading the tea leaves, UNH they made Santos interim coach, I'm guessing that they expect McDonnell to be gone for a while (if not for good). I'd imagine that if it were expected to be temporary, they would have made Lyons interim coach given his previous HC experience.

Earlier this summer UNH announced that former Brown University Head Coach, Phil Estes, joined New Hampshire as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. Estes and Coach Mac were teammates at UNH 1978-80. Just wondering if his involvement was a favor to Mac and his Alma mater in anticipation of this medical leave of absence.

Hopefully things turn out for the best!

As a Lehigh fan I know how tough a situation like this can be on the coach his family along with their extended family (the program, fans and administration).

From one cancer warrior to another -- kick its @$$ Coach Mac! Praying for healing and comfort as you attack this disease as relentlessly as your teams attacked their opponents.
