I'm curious what the Southland people actually think of SLU, I've heard some stuff from SLU fans, but I also heard from MVSU fans last year they would come into our place and kick our **** in. So I'd like to hear some 'less' biased thoughts just to get an idea on how much of what I've heard is reasonable.

I saw quite a few predictions for SLU in the SLC week 1 thread. I'm curious whether that's because SLU is better than their previous season indicates or disdain for JSU.

SELA..... They are a middle of the pack SLC team, so think of them more like a top tier OVC team. Their defense should be improved under Guidry. JSU should have no issues in this one even though SELA seems to play better in bigger games.

Ditto. SLU is a midlevel SLC team. They play fast and the games I've been to they hit hard. Strawberry is typically a tough place to play for any team. Two years ago they hung with just about everybody including their FBS opponents. Last year they hung with their FBS opponent ULM but had trouble throughout the year. They were the bipolar team last year. They return Virgil Chason at QB (unless I missed something) who threw for over 3000 yards last year (59% comp. rate) but also threw 13 picks. Cut off the passing game and follow what Nicholls did in their 44-0 win against SLU and you should be fine. As an SLC fan I hope they recruited talent to help that QB. A run game would be nice to assist.

Let's see what JSU does against a Chatt team rebuilding off a bad year last year (fired the coaches). Chatt looked 'ok'.. EIU looked to be much there equal and is picked to be a bottom OVC team so I am not sure about Chatt. I would say they are middlin' right now which fits - all new coaches, new system takes a year. In watching your game it makes me nervous for our opponent, Sacred Heart a top team in the NEC that we should handle on paper but this is their biggest game of the year and to knock of the #7 team in the country would be huge for their program. I think our guys know this team has weapons, RB was on the top 50 watch list, QB transfer from temple and a very good defense, time will tell.

I was thinking how many times they showed the JSU sideline and hands were thrown up in the air like WHAT am I supposed to do?! Having been on the sidelines in college games, I got to hear the conversations so I look toward that area when adversity hits a team. VERY telling when a head coach is 30 yards down the sideline by himself and the players on the field make a 10 yard catch and slump over like they lost the game. Ouch.

We can definitely run and played fast last night. We controlled both lines of scrimmage and were able to get consistent pressure on their QB with our front four. Our O-line played pretty well also ... didn't allow a sack and they really didn't get close more than a time or two. Ran it good enough and made some plays in the passing game. I thought coming in this would be our best team since 2013-14 and so far so good. We'll need to build on this one and play with consistency but this team has a chance to be pretty good.

If I'm honest, I'm not sure how much of the pressure on Coop was SLU's DL being good vs our OL being god awful.

SLU played well, obviously, but based on what I saw JSU put out last night, if I were you I'd hold off another week on championing the DL, just to be sure.

You could tell Guidry knew what he was doing though. That's for sure.

as I say w everyone - it's just a first game. (this proves it's not a defensive statement as I am NOT a JSU fan). Let's see what JSU does against a Chatt team rebuilding off a bad year last year (fired the coaches). Chatt looked 'ok'.. EIU looked to be much there equal and is picked to be a bottom OVC team so I am not sure about Chatt. I would say they are middlin' right now which fits - all new coaches, new system takes a year. Did JSU have their worst game or is that really who they are? certainly not a good one for JSU - pretty shocking to me and others too

Chatt didn't fire the coaches. Chatt's previous HC, Tom Arth, left for an FBS HC job with Akron in the MAC.

I don't quite know what we are yet, but I do know we're light years better than last year. And I know Lance Guidry can evaluate players and coach defense. Long season ahead.

Lance is a great defensive coordinator!! It was things other than his won/loss record that led to our coaching change.

Don't bet against Hurricane Dorian ... several 10 game seasons last year because of Hurricane.

SELA is at Beth Cook next saturday .. Daytona Beach is in the path ... they could go 4-7 or 7-4, but that game is in jeopardy.

Good point. Reminds me of something I read in a book by Bill James. He said he was a kid in 1962 and his dad said the Mets would have a .250 team. With Bill being a math nerd, he knew it was impossible for a team to go exactly .250 in a 162 game season so he bet his dad that they wouldn’t go .250.

Unfortunately for him, they had two rainouts and finished 40-120.

Actually when my brother and I were in that deck we had KSUPD try to trap us in the deck. The deck is next to the dorms so I'm sure I got some complaints. So we had to slip out a side exit and bolt.
