We actually don't know yet. You can be glad that Hodges is gone, just as I am glad that McCaster is gone. I'm actually concerned about Mays. He guided you guys into the 4th quarter tied with the Bison. He looked to be a strong runner who fought for every yard. His deep passing may not be the best around, but on slants and short routes, he looks VERY capable.
I have voted my homer pick and taken Samford. We may actually have a little more depth at places like the O-Line, and our defense has a chance to be really good this year. I can understand why the Penguins are favored, but this is certainly an interesting matchup. It might be like last year when the favored team provided the opponents with enough gifts for the upset. I think both teams have LOTS of question marks, and this early test might be beneficial for both teams. Can't wait. GO DOGS!!!!!

Conditioning will be interesting and may impact the game. This has been a brutally hot August and I would guess temps in the mid-upper 90s would be likely.
I do feel bad for the fans, though. I've sat through a few August games with high heat and humidity and it can be absolutely brutal.

Some clarification here please: Those 2 losses to Dayton were in 1985 and 1986. We were also non-scholly, and had just started football back in 1984. All 4 losses to YSU were there. I really thought the 2016 playoff score was closer than the actual game was. The 2 regular season games at Youngstown were also not very competitive. In the 1991 playoffs, however, we beat New Hampshire and JMU, and went on to play the Penguins up there. I saw that game, and I will always believe if it had been played in anything less than that Artic weather with snow, freezing temp, and windstorms, Samford would have taken it. Terry Bowden had a terrific team with blazing speed that year even though the Penguins went on to be the NCs.
I really don't know what to expect Saturday. I do think it will probably be a competitive game, however.

As I said, horrible defending on that play. The QB is confident in the pocket, but an air raid offense will kill your defense especially against a team that likes to run the ball. Possession is necessary to help the defense stay fresh especially in that #SouthernHeat xwhistlex

Watching to this point, I'm left with three observations:
1. Liam Welch looks good, and will put up big numbers, but isn't quite as crisp or as elusive as Hodges.
2. Samford is struggling with YSU's downhill run. They better figure that out, because the SoCon's got a lot of physical running backs.
3. I know Hatcher likes going fast, but it almost seems like they go way too fast to actually accomplish anything. How is their defense going to hold up for four quarters when the offense holds the ball 2 minutes a quarter?

Well, my prediction is on the mark so far. Solid D. Running O with RB by committee. Short pass game. They are still thin on the OL and Mays is brittle. Not sure how much hitting he will endure. Should open 4-0 but the league will be interesting. Samford is not very good and is in for a long season except they are in the SoCon,lol.

Nice win for YSU. Up next is Howard in 2 weeks, another pass happy O that comes to Ytown. I expect it could get ugly for Howard. The transfers played big today . Jones ( C, WVU) and Velez (Juco) made the OL solid. Jones the transfer S from Vandy had a big day. Getting Reed back at DE ( he had 2 sacks) and Hegedus at S got2 starters back from injury who also played big. They will go 4-0 OOC. THen the fun begins in the MVFC. I got them projected at 7-5. Never know, they might get better to make the playoffs. Onward !

agree but how many teams lost THREE guys to the NFL (like Samford did) ? Samford MAY (little ways to go yet to determine this) be a shell of who they were last year.
It's like Villanova / COlgate. Is Villanova awesome? Not ready to say that by any means yet many here seem ready to think YSU is great. Maybe Samford just stinks.

Right. I don't know that YSU is great.. Samford may well end up a bottom tier SoCon team. Everyone in SoCon has been wondering how it would go when they lost this - Payton award and NFL QB Hodges, NFL WR McKnight, NFL DL Gooden... think about it - even with that they couldn't win the SoCon or be consistent !!!

Wrong. Losing 3 NFL guys make a HUGE difference in FCS. Furman had 2 or 3 in 2004 and 2005 and went to the semi-finals and lost to JMU in 04 by ONE POINT who won the national title with Furman as their closest playoff game BY FAR. those guys graduated and we started going downhill fast. Heck, I saw Furman have ONE NFL Player (on the OL no less) and he basically single-handedly put us in the 2nd round of the playoffs (Dakota Dozier). At FCS NFL guys can't always be replaced w w 'next man up'.
I ask you, (really I wonder) how many FCS teams lost three NFL players last year / or any year? no one seems able to answer that yet
------------------------------------------------------------------
Look let's just focus here, ok? - Samford hasn't been able to win the SoCon with at least 3 NFL players - one at QB as the Payton award winner? I'm not a Samford fan at all. I just see them every year in conference.
It makes you wonder about their coaching when you can't win consistently with that kind of talent. There are several SoCon fans who wonder about coach Hatcher at Samford and if he will be there in 2/3 years now that those guys are gone.
I'm NOT a one-game guy. I'm a long-term guy. that is what matters. And I will be interested to see Samford this year and next without those guys.

We have twice in the past 3 years. Hasn't really affected us.
North Dakota State has several times. Hasn't seemed to phase them.
We will probably send 4 or 5 to the NFL this season.

This game came down to the line play on both sides of the ball. Youngstown was better on both sides. They lined up and telegraphed runs and dared Samford to stop them By doing this they kept their high powered offense off the field. Youngstown's defensive line caused all kinds of problems for Samford's offense. Did Both teams make mistakes? Yes. Youngstown had some blown coverages and sloppy snapping etc. But their defense shut them down. Look at the time of possession stats for the two teams. Samford had no answers because their was a mismatch at the line of scrimmage.

I realize this is a hijack xnodx and I apologize but when people start talking about recruiting etc... this is one thing that does get me is how hard it is for Furman to recruit - there was a listing the other day for SoCon schools and Furman was the HARDEST to get kids in. Heck, i KNOW of a kid whose brother played for us and we weren't allowed to recruit the younger brother until an Ivy-type school offered him first thus proving he was worthy of our academic standards ( proving it to our admissions, our coaches wanted him ). You see, It's not so easy for some schools to do with transfers etc. what OTHER schools do. Like I said, to keep it civil, ours is toughest in the SoCon alone...
Here is the link - no bias here just a report on each school: (I'm not concerned with the other basketball things, I'm focused on the academics - they have a line titled 'ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS')
https://watchstadium.com/news/socon-basketball-coaches-rank-the-best-jobs-in-the-conference-08-15-2019/
Furman, number 10 (meaning HARDEST) in academics - this is from a basketball listing but the same academics clearly apply. So some of us have trouble with what you call 'recruiting' - Our coach doesn't make excuses but honestly I am somewhat shocked we can even compete AT ALL. All he said one day was 'well, we definitely have a smaller pool of candidates to draw from'.. he didn't say more but I have spoken w coaches at Furman. It's tough
Citadel, VMI are tough because they have to convince a kid to agree to do military drills.. Furman and Wofford are tough because they have tough academics
so, FROM A FOOTBALL STANDPOINT ONLY, where you need a ton of great athletes, be thankful you can take those kids you can take. We can't take some of them. that's not smack. it's a fact.
As a matter of fact, to show I am objective, our rival is the Citadel and I will use them as an example.. they have a tremendous uphill battle recruiting to get you to agree to play football AND do military drills and no girls and no weekends your first year. And you have to get inspected for your drill segeant for your bed made etc. By comparison, most schools, JSU and most EVERYONE has it SO EASY. So let's not just say 'it's called recruiting'. There are many other factors at play. Academics, military, etc.

In my opinion, it's probably not quite as hard to recruit at Furman as some would assume.
Yes, there are academic standards. That is going to winnow the pool somewhat. Still, there are a lot of things to sell recruits on that most FCS schools can't offer.
I didn't read the prior posts, but there really isn't an excuse. Wofford, one of the smallest D1 schools in the country, went up to YSU in the post season two years ago in cold weather and probably should have won that game. If Wofford can do it, anyone else can. Samford got outplayed yesterday. No excuses.

Frankly, I was surprised Samford only threw it 32 times. I figured they would have thrown it between 40-55 times. Telling stat is their rushing (24 for 60 yards), that will not get it done versus good teams.
Hodges was a very good player but that did not translate in Samford being a good team.

I went back and looked, that was one of the lowest passing outputs for a Samford team in the last two years. I think they hit similar numbers against Kennesaw State and Georgia (both teams that controlled the ball for long periods of time).
What was most noticeable to me wasn't the passing, but the running. Hodges was not only a great passer, but he was a magician at keeping plays alive with his feet, keeping his eyes downfield, and hitting receivers scrambling open. You are watching him do this currently in the NFL. He's really good at it.
Welch has the passing ability and arm strength, but what I didn't see was Hodge's mobility.

Once again, Samford was Samford when a big opportunity was presented, and that is a hard pill for me to swallow. Can we still have a good season with a QB change? I do hope so. Samford, yesterday, however, should not be taken as a SoCon example. This conference has recruited better in the last few years, and I believe that top to bottom it is good and still improving. First it was the massive pissing fight with ndsu fans about “we have more competition for recruits” and now it’s “well we have higher standards” wah wah wah. Good grief you guys need someone to clean up after a JMU game so you can have enough tissues or what? SoCon? How about the PoorMe conference. Georgia Southern and App St leave and now it’s all whining and excuses. xcoffeexHell, even UNI loses 3 or 4 guys each year that end up in NFL camps.

Congrats to YSU - they just whipped our butts. Samford was not ready to play and the Guins were. Now, I will get back to my morning mourning.
I had the feeling that the 'Dogs would have a hard time replacing a talent like Hodges. That doesn't mean you wont, but it will take some time for someone to fill those shoes. Personally I think for Samford to get over the hump from good team to title contender, Hatcher is going to have to create a more balanced attack. It always seems that the Hatch Attach air raid is either on or it's off. I think that's led to some of the inconsistency that we've seen out of the Bulldogs. Samford has athletes on both sides of the ball.

Well when you only have the ball like 17 minutes you probably don't get to throw as much.
A lot of that was Samford's fault too. The Bulldogs were moving as fast as I'd ever seen them early in the game. It's one thing to hurry up, but they seemed like they were trying to break records out there for snaps. Oddly, YSU, who moved much slower, ran, what, 30 more plays?
I'm not sure I get the point of spreading a team out and then moving at lightening speed but never seeming to audible out of the call. I mean, what's the benefit?

Off topic: but I'd like to commend you for being the most tolerable Furman fan.

I think Samford has athletes on defense, but are hamstrung in a couple of ways: The hurry up offense asks them to be on the field a lot. It's hard for any D to be effective when their offense can't stay on the field. Secondly, playing against that style of offense in practice doesn't get them ready for physical games. I think Samford will be back to being a good but not great team once they get their QB situation sorted out. They have too many talented athletes not to win games.

If we're being real though, Hatcher isn't known for his stout defenses.
A hurry up is fine if you can keep the offense on the field. JSU is a 'fast' offense but we can get off the field on 3rd down.

I don’t think there was much to figure out when it came to that game. YSU kept their offense off the field by controlling the clock. A one point they had a 75 yard 8 min drive and ran every single play. Samford has remarkable skill players but they don’t have the horses on either side of the line or at line backer. They will win games, but if you can’t run between the tackles you won’t make it to the title game. And when you have to play a team like NDSU they can shut you down in both pass and run and they keep giving the ball back to their efficient but not flashy offense. That the formula and it hasn’t changed in decades. What I likes to see is that YSU went back to the I formation, something that NDSU has never abandoned. How many teams with Air Raid offenses have won a title at any level? I can’t think of one.

YSU has the offense and defense to do this. Mays is not a great passer but can get it done.
Run the ball and play good defense. YSU is going to be tough this year.

Samford has athletes on their defense. For instance, their linebacker, Laguins, was a four-star transfer from UGA. They don't lack for talent on that side of the ball.
I was actually impressed with how much of a fight the Bulldog defense put up considering YSU ran 80+ plays and held the ball for nearly 42 minutes. YSU's offense had to punt 5 times and benefitted from some costly turnovers. Their offense really didnt' take over until late in the 4th quarter when Samford's defense just didn't have anything left in the tank.

IMO, the same thing is going to happen when UC Davis comes to Fargo. They will try to throw it all over the field and score quickly. Maier is a good QB but if he is on the sideline, their offense will not score.
The Davis defense is pretty average so the Bison running game should wear that defense down in the 2nd half. Same formula for the Bison. Plus, the Bison OL is going to be really good. Lean on them a lot with the new RFR QB this year.

Over the years following Chris Hatcher's career, I have come to a few conclusions:
1. The air raid is, in fact, a "ball control" offense. The offense just controls the ball by throwing, not running. I think it is a mistake to say "well, they don't pound the run game and therefore do not control the clock." Samford is about league average in the SoCon for TOP. They'll throw a ton of short routes and move the ball just like a running game would. Saturday they just weren't completing their passes at a high enough rate.
2. The offense is designed to really score from distance. In the red zone, it is much harder to spread teams out and throw because there are more defenders in a small space and you take away the stable o fthe offense - four vertical routes.
3. I was surprised by this, but Samford scored 16 rushing touchdowns last season in the redzone (conference play). That's right in line with Wofford and the Citadel, two offenses that almost exclusively run the ball. A lot of that was Devlin Hodges running ability, of course, but for a team that throws as much as they do, you would think that number would be lower. Again, that piggy backs on point 2 - it's harder to run their passing attack in the red zone.
The air raid really uses two route concepts as bread and butter - four verts and the inside mesh (the flankers crossing the formation and running so close together that it is difficult for a defender to follow them). What I noticed Saturday was that YSU was able to jump the mesh route (leading to at least one big INT). My guess is Welch, being a new starter in week 0, got too predictable and telegraphed his throws. I mean, every team that plays Samford knows what they want to do, it's just a matter of stopping it.

I've noticed piont number 1 also. It's sort of the 'west coast San Fran' offense that throws a bunch of short routes at times and thus can have a decent TOP.
The problem right now is the QB and WRs are not in sync like they were w Hodges and McKnight (both in NFL as I have said) so the danger is if you don't complete those passes at a decent rate youget in real trouble of losing TOP worse than a running team. as long as you complete enough 5 yard passes it's fine. but if you don't you are off the field and back on D real quick. worse than a running team even if both teams go three and out bc at least the running team takes two minutes of clock tick w three or four plays before punting. that's the danger for Samford right now.
Wish Furman played them soon LOL - by the time we play them they will probably have it figured out. ANyway, I still think they beat TTU but I don't know anything about TTU I fully admit other than their reputation. I am sure JSU fan knows a lot more being OVC. While TTU has film on Samford I think it is still in Samford's favor to have played a game already and it be game 1 for TTU. Of course, if TTU can line up and run it will be a long day for Samford. SU just needs to complete a few more passes and keep their D a little more rested

That's a pretty good analysis. I generally hesitate to question officials, but a pass interference call or two would have benefitted Welch, and helped his confidence(interception resulted). Now, NO, the winner would still have been YSU, and I don't want to sour grape anything, but the OVC officials did let some questionable ones go. Also, Liam seemed to stare down his receivers way too much, and YSU also did a really good job of covering them. All in all, Samford has lots of work to do and decisions to make. JSU limped out of this game last year, and went on to the Playoffs. I'm hoping Samford will benefit from the mistakes and have a good season. I would caution our future opponents against using permanent ink to write in that "W" just yet.

I don't put too much emphasis on a "Week 0" game as both teams are going to make a ton of mistakes (they really shouldn't be playing that early in the year, but I digress).
I was a little concerned with Samford's OL later in the game, especially at LT. I don't know if the starter was injured or Hatcher was substituting guys, but they had a freshman out there that looked completely overmatched against YSU's big DE (#9). Samford was having to help him nearly every play by sending the running back that direction to throw an extra body.
I thought the starters looked fine, but if there's a steep drop in the two deep, that may be a cause for concern over a long season.

A Fr. going against a former 3*** player who was #38 recruit in the state of Pennsylvania is obviously at a disadvantage. LOL! Our starter at LT, however, is Nick Nixon, all conference and some speculate a NFL possibility. I think OL is one area that we are deep in. And yes, Hatcher did play a lot of players.

I don't doubt there's competition.
My point is that an offensive line is not just the five starters, but includes the depth and rotation. If backups (not "mop up guys", but No. 2s) are getting shoved around, that's not necessarily a good thing.

SUDOG, I didn't see the game at all. I want to start w that. But what are your concerns w depth - where exactly? It sounds like YSU OL just leaned on Samford after a while though the game was close until late 3rd Q maybe? Was your DL worn down? Obviously what D wouldn't get worn down when the TOP is that different - I think it was about 43/17 in favor of YSU. man. Last year you all could stay on the field on O w Hodges and McKnight doing their thing.

We not only had to replace Gooden, but Horace Roberts was a BIG NG who was tough in that middle. I think we have some good replacements in both positions(DE and NG) but the D-Line depth is my biggest concern. I also thought we opened the 2nd half playing far better, but yeah, YSU did wear us down near the end. IMO, our O-Line is far better off depth wise than the D-Line. Do others agree with my thought that in FCS the one hardest position to recruit to is interior defensive linemen?

agreed .. OL is a much more unnatural physical skill set than DL ... I think OL is harder to play and coach. Having the OL physical attributes help but that don't make a good OL. Just seems like coaching/playing the combination of pass blocking, run blocking, and read option blocking as a unit makes it very tough to find and develop the right guys. The next hardest position after OL is the DB cornerback. Very similar situations for OL and DB corners .. totally at the mercy of whatever the guy in front of you is doing. I would say DT is maybe 3rd hardest .. actually 4th hardest to find and develop after QB position too.
I say this as a pure fan who really appreciates the guys who play thankless positions ... but not as a coach who had to recruit and develop any players ... . So take it with a grain a salt.

Two different things here. I said to recruit not develop. It seems harder to find the 6'+ 300+ pound interior defensive lineman out of high school who can move than any other single position. You see these guys at places like Georgia, Clemson, and Bama. At FCS schools, with few exceptions, however, I don't think so. Just my opinion, others can think differently.

Welp...as an OL Player & Coach for half a century, I’m gonna agree with SU DOG.
Smart, athletic (agile with balance & innate ability to apply leverage), somewhat under-altituded or under-beefy or a little weak or a step (or 2) slow can become OUTSTANDING FCS OLinemen with great technique, applying their smarts, and playing with tremendous effort. Heck, the New England Patriots seem to think they can even do that in the NFL (Andrews, Mason, Wynn).
But, with D-Linemen, it’s much more about the physical tools with which the good Lord has blessed them or not. Physical tools ‘sell’ faster in the FBS Marketplace, so there are fewer of those Cats in FCS. That’s why many (not all, of course) of the best FCS DLmen, historically, are FBS Transfers-in. So, I agree with the person that mentioned CB’s. Same thing applies. Physical tools trump other assets in those 2 positions more than with OL.
