He is the only LB they are bringing in as a free agent and they did not drafted another LB so this should be good for him. I think he will make the team as a WILL Linebacker.

Congrats Kyle!!

I was really surprised that Shotwell went undrafted, and am glad to see someone pick him up. I think the Raiders had a pretty good draft overall this year.

Prolly too early to say they wont bring in any other LBs

I heard from an insider out there that they don't plan to. Although you are right, it is still early. They could easily decide to bring in another player. As of now Shotwell is the only LB they have signed.

theres still 3 months til training camp and 4 months til the season starts. Anything can happen in that time including veteran FA LBs coming available and with that nearly $10 million just off there books they have the money to spend on them should any come available

Even if the Raiders brought someone else in, it says something that Shotwell was their first choice out of the free agent pool. I think he has a good chance of making the team. Another thing, Oakland likes speed on defense, so Shotwell would fit in well in the Raider system.

Why did Bain fall out of the draft?

Players like John Bowie and David Jones moving up hurt some. He dropped out totally due to some type of character issue rumor I have heard but not sure what it is exactly and probably won't comment in public when I do unless he does not mind it being said.

I would say so. The other thing could be that nobody has talked to him yet or his agent won't put it out until tomorrow. Ball has agreed to terms with someone, I am almost certain of it.

Harris, Swogger headed to NFL
By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian

They didn't hear their name called on ESPN, but former Montana Grizzly standouts Tuff Harris and Josh Swogger will get an opportunity to make an NFL team.

Harris, a standout return man and cornerback, signed a two-year free agent deal with the Miami Dolphins. Swogger wasn't among the 11 QBs selected in the NFL Draft this weekend, but he is still going to minicamp with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 11.

“I just got off the phone probably 15 minutes ago,” Swogger, who threw for 2,685 yards and 17 touchdowns for UM last fall, said at 6 p.m. Sunday. “I talked to the Jaguars and Vikings, too.

“Everybody wants to get drafted, but I think this is a good situation.”

Kansas City has questions at quarterback, with Trent Green demanding to be traded and rumors of a deal with Miami still swirling. Swogger, who transferred from Washington State last spring and helped UM to a 12-2 mark in 2006, had a total of 10 teams contact him in the weeks leading up to the draft.

“Four teams picked a quarterback,” Swogger said from a restaurant in Youngstown, Ohio, where he watched the draft. “We were just waiting for one of those other teams to contact me. And Kansas City was one of those teams.”

Miami, meanwhile, wasn't one of those teams in heavy contact with Harris, a Colstrip product who excelled as a punt return man with the Griz.

Email from UAlbany athletic director today:

Andre Coleman (6-3, 274) and offensive lineman Jacob Hobbs (6-3, 303) have agreed to terms as free agents with the San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively. Coleman was named to The Sports Network and Football Gazette Mid-Major All-America first-team units. He made his second straight appearance on the All-NEC first team. Coleman totaled 42 tackles and led the team in hits for a loss (13.0) and sacks (6.0). Hobbs, an offensive tackle on the collegiate level, was chosen to the 2006 Football Gazette Mid-Major All-America second team. He earned first-team All-NEC recognition.

Here's a new one...Michael Malone to the Dolphins...

From Bearkat Athletics...

Running back D. D. Terry and wide receiver Michael Malone from Sam Houston State have signed free agent contracts with NFL teams.

Terry has become a Jacksonville Jaguar while Malone has joined the Miami Dolphins.

Malone caught 23 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns last season, starting every game at wide receiver. He came to Sam Houston State as a transfer from Virginia Tech. As a junior in 2005, he caught 15 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown

Thanks! That one had not been reported yet. So far players signing seem to be exactly who was figured to be signed. The only surprise was that WR from SEMO but he had a workout with Detroit just before the draft and they liked him a lot.

Chattanooga's Eldra Buckley signed with the San Diego Chargers...

UTC's Buckley headed to San Diego

Monday, April 30, 2007

By Wesley Rucker
Staff Writer

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga tailback Eldra Buckley agreed Sunday night to sign a free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers after he was not among the 225 players taken in last weekend's NFL draft.

Buckley, who watched all seven rounds of the draft from his aunt's couch in hometown Charleston, Miss., said he will fax his signed contract to the Chargers today when he returns to Chattanooga and then fly to San Diego this weekend.

As Mocs coach Rodney Allison predicted, Buckley and agent James A. "Bus" Cook received calls from several teams immediately after the draft. Buckley said he also seriously considered signing with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.

"I just thought that was the best situation for me," Buckley said. "They didn't draft any running backs, so I thought I had the best chance there. Coach (Norv) Turner said he wanted a young back there.

"It was disappointing at first, because I wanted to get drafted. But more than anything, I just wanted a shot to play in the NFL."

San Diego starting tailback LaDainian Tomlinson is generally regarded as one of the best backs of his or any other generation. But his talented backup, Michael Turner, wants to be the feature back somewhere else and has been involved in several trade rumors.

"Rookies don't look at anybody's starter," Allison said. "You're concerned about the backup guys, because those are the guys you have to beat to make the team.

"I wanted him to sign with Mr. Cook because I knew he would do his homework and fight the right place, and it sounds like he did. That's a good place to be, a good organization."

Buckley said he was "really excited" about playing with Tomlinson.

"Nobody knows if (Michael) Turner is going to be there next year, and he probably won't be there after that, anyway," Buckley said. "If he's there next year, I can still be on the practice squad and then be LT's backup after that. And if he's not there, who knows?"

Starters at DE include Kearse and Howard - Kearse was hurt again most of the year last year and Howard was a bit disappointing. Trent Cole has played well as a backup and Jacqua Thomas hasn't looked bad. Jerome McDougal, a former 1st round pick, is still around but may be released after this year. Oh, and the 2nd round pick from this year, a DE from Notre Dame, is there.

LB's are a weak spot for the Birds and this is where he could stick. They just released Dhani Jones, which is good because he was terrible. Former Cal Poly Chris Gocong is now slated to be one of the starting OLB's with Takeo Spikes the other. The Eagles also use Omar Gathier (rookie last year who looked decent) and they spent a 3rd round pick on a LB from Nebraska, Bradley.

They also have the LB from JMU, Akeem Jordan, signed as a FA so there's competition there - on the plus side, very few things are stable.

Youngstown State's TB Marcus Mason Free Agent Signing Washington Redskins

April 30, 2007
Football: Marcus Mason Inks Free-Agent Deal With Washington Redskins
Youngstown -- Former Youngstown State All-America tailback Marcus Mason (Potomac, Md.) has signed a free-agent deal with the Washington Redskins, the organization announced on Monday.
Mason, who rushed for a school-record 1,847 yards in 12 games as a senior, becomes the first Penguin to sign a contract with the Redskins since Quentin Lowry in 1981. Mason averaged a school-record 153.9 yards rushing per game and scored 23 touchdowns as the program reached the NCAA playoff semifinals for the first time since 1999.

After transferring from Illinois prior to the 2005 campaign, Mason had a memorable two-year career with the Guins. In his two seasons, he played in 21 games rushing for 2,739 yards on 478 carries. He had 31 touchdowns and set a school record with a 95-yard touchdown run at Western Illinois in 2006.

He was a first-team All-America selection by The Associated Press, the Sports Network, the Walter Camp Foundation and the American Football Coaches Association. He was named the 2006 Gateway Offensive Player of the Year and set a school record with 10 100-yard rushing games during the '06 campaign, including six straight at one point.

Washington's backfield is currently one of the most talented in the NFL. Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright and Kerry Carter are all listed as running backs for Washington.

It marks the second straight year the Penguins have a had a free agent signee.
Last year, wide receiver Kyle Smith signed a contact with the Minnesota Vikings. After being released last year, Smith signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January and is currently a member of the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europa

I have heard from a very good personal source that Jim Phalen of YSU has signed with the Cleveland Browns, he's a DT and strong as an oxe...

Also heard that Jason Perry (CB/KR/PR) has signed with Cleveland as well. Most likely as a PR, since Dennis Northcutt has left the browns and Josh Cribbs is terrible at PR.

I've also heard Ryan Jewell has signed, but i dunno who with.

Good review, spots are open for the player who wants to take it. The good thing is the EAGLES don't sign people they don't think can make the team. It will be up to Marques, Bradley, and Jordan to prove themselves.

That must be your personal opinion, because I have never read anything or heard anything from the Boston media along those lines. Do you have a link to back up your statement? It doesn't make any sense at all to have an unproven rookie as the backup when you have Cassell. As a number three, that's a different story.

If I'm Belichek then I'd much rather go to war with Cassell as my backup! It's not like he's killing them on the salary cap!

Aside from adding depth, the Pats may draft someone to develop should they decide to move Cassel, who could hold some trade value provided he has a good training camp.

In that case, coach Bill Belichick (http://www.bostonherald.com/search/?searchSite=true&keyword=Bill+Belichick&mode=score&sorting=pubdate) may opt to sign a veteran quarterback - a la Vinny Testaverde (http://news.bostonherald.com/search/?searchSite=true&keyword=Vinny+Testaverde&mode=all&sorting=pubdate) [stats (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=nfl/teams/077/roster.aspx?id=077)] last year - along with selecting a player in the draft.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Just as the 2007 NFL Draft was coming to a close, Maurice Price’s phone started ringing.

“I had about 15 different teams that called me, wanting to offer a free agent deal, I sat down and decided that Kansas City had the best offer,” said Price, one of the newest Kansas City Chiefs.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the former Buccaneer standout will report to the Chiefs six-week training camp on May 11.

The rookies and veterans will all come together for the camp, with Price having the opportunity to learn from such wide outs as 12-year veteran Eddie Kennison and former Clemson stand out Rod Gardner.

and i thought Bill B. was smart. Matt Gutieriez has done nothing in his college career to prove he could be a backup. i hope he does well, but it upsets me that people like him get a shot just because he went to Michigan, while other guys who have performed well in the FCS won't get the chance.

I dont think Cassel ever played a down at USC playing behind Palmer and Leinert and he used a 6th round pick I believe on him.

I'm a little shocked that no one has signed Alex Miller.

AMHERST, Mass. - Despite not having anyone taken in the 2007 NFL Draft, UMass is piling up players who are agreeing to sign free agent contracts with teams. On Sunday night, wide receiver Brandon London agreed to join the New York Giants, tailback Steve Baylark will be headed to the Arizona Cardinals and guard David Thompson will be off to the St. Louis Rams. On Monday, safety James Ihedigbo was invited to the New York Jets Rookie Mini-Camp which will take place next weekend. He originally agreed to go to the Cincinnati Bengals, but the Jets provided him a better opportunity.

London will be joining former UMass cornerback R.J. Cobbs with the Giants, where Cobbs played in the NFL Playoffs. London was an All-Atlantic 10 performer in 2006 in addition to being named an ECAC I-AA All-Star and Don Hansen All-Northeast Region Honorable Mention. He led UMass in receiving and yards in 2006 with 50 catches for 781 yards. He finished second all-time at UMass in career catches with 150 and third in career receiving yards with 2022. He is also fourth in career TD catches with 15.

Atleast they aren't going to NY or Dallas !!xnonox xnonox

Yep, you got me! xlolx

And yes, go anywhere but Dallas. Ironically, among the Skins picks is a safety with the last name Landry and LB with the first name Dallas. Was this some kind of VP of personnel kind of joke or something? xconfusedx xrotatehx

But I must say, I respect Dallas fans. Philly fans? As Borat would say, "Not so much..." They are a group of thugs and punks that come into a visitor's stadium drunk and looking for fights. And God forbid you got to Philly as a fan of the visiting team. I guess it's all that penned up frustration from being the only team in the NFC to never win the big one! :p

Sadly, long gone are the days of RFK rocking - literally. It's been a tough road for the franchise since Gibbs first left.

Anyway, I digress. I wanted to post that Dhani Jones LB was released this week, so more opportunities for Murrell and Jordan.

Eagles Release Veteran LB Jones

April 30, 2007
By CHRIS McPHERSON

Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said on Sunday that second-year linebacker Chris Gocong is currently No. 1 on the depth chart on the strongside. On Monday, the Eagles released veteran linebacker Dhani Jones.

Jones, originally a sixth-round pick of the Giants in 2000, was signed by the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent in 2004 and started in 47 regular season games over the past three seasons. In his three-year stint, Jones had 288 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. But the Eagles wanted more production from the position, so they drafted Gocong out of Cal-Poly in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Chris Gocong is the starting strongside linebacker
A defensive end in college, Gocong's size (6-foot-2, 263 pounds) and big-play ability (Division 1-AA single-season record 23.5 sacks in 2005) was enticing enough to the Eagles to draft him and move him over to linebacker. Gocong missed this past season with a stinger injury, but the Eagles' desire to utilize bigger linebackers at the strongside spot (Jones is 6-foot-1, 240 pounds) was evident. For the second-straight season they used a third-round pick on a big linebacker, this time it was Nebraska's Stewart Bradley (6-foot-3, 254 pounds).

"We've got pretty good tight ends in this division here, so I think it's important that you cover those players in the pass game, and at the same time, be able to line up on their nose, and be able to sustain the line of scrimmage," said head coach Andy Reid on Saturday night after Bradley was drafted. "Stewart is a true SAM linebacker that can play MIKE and does a nice job over the tight end and will be a nice complement to our linebackers."

The Eagles have changed the look at the linebacker position through the draft and trades in the past 12 months. On the weakside, the Eagles traded for Takeo Spikes in March who will enter the post-draft mini-camp as the starter. He will be backed up by 2006 draft pick Omar Gaither, who was the starter at the end of last season, and 2005 draft pick Matt McCoy. In the middle, Gaither will back up veteran Jeremiah Trotter. And on the strongside, Gocong, Bradley and 2006 rookie free agent Tank Daniels will mix it up for the No. 1 spot.

The Eagles defense will have a very different look in two weeks when the players assemble at the NovaCare Complex, especially at the linebacker spot, with plenty of battles featuring a mix of young, fresh players and Pro Bowl veterans.

I understand the EAGLE fans issue - Some ruin it for many. But there isn't anything wrong with Drexel except they are smart enough to Not have football as a sport.

Being an APP fan and an EAGLE fan has been GREAT, I have always liked Skins fans. I remember the old teams well. I love John Riggins. He has alot of philly in him.

Roster's not very big - I'm not sure there's room for both Murrell and Jordan. Eagles picked up a LB in the draft relatively early so he's likely to be around. Plus they have young LB's in front of them to beat out (Gocong, Gathier, and Daniels). And Takeo Spikes and Trotter are locks for roster spots as well. You could see one of these guys make the roster and the other get a practice sqaud spot. Hard to see them both making it though.

Uh, the Eagles won the NFL Championship in 1948, again in 1949, and in 1960. And actually, there are 4 teams in the NFC that have never won the championship - Saints, Panthers, Falcons, and Seahawks.

They are a group of thugs and punks that come into a visitor's stadium drunk and looking for fights. And God forbid you got to Philly as a fan of the visiting team.
1. Philly fans love that others think that of them.

2. It's complete bulls!t. I've been to many games in Philly and many in DC.. the Skins fans are EVERY bit as bad, if not worse than Philly fans. I've seen fight after fight after fight in RFK and now FedEx for Eagles, Giants, Cowboys... games. It's not the visiting fans, it's the Skins fans. xnodx

ASU's Daniel Bettis is going to go to the Lions Minicamp. Now I just Wiggins would get picked up by someone.

Article here

http://goasu.com/article/10754/
I was in the App State locker room this afternoon and a bunch of the Mountaineers (particularly Corey Lynch) were stunned that Jeremy Wiggins hadn't gotten picked up by anyone. The players were feeling a little under-respected by the NFL teams, considering they are coming off back-to-back national championships.

A couple of other Appalachian notes: The word was going around that WR William Mayfield had signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, joining former teammates Richie Williams and DaVon Fowlkes.

LB Monte Smith said his agent is talking to several CFL teams. At least these great players are getting the chance to continue their careers somewhere.

and i thought Bill B. was smart. Matt Gutieriez has done nothing in his college career to prove he could be a backup. i hope he does well, but it upsets me that people like him get a shot just because he went to Michigan, while other guys who have performed well in the FCS won't get the chance.
Ditto Peems, well said. I was amazed to read Gutieriez's name in Matt Dougherty's top 25 FCS draft picks too. The guy really didn't do anything at all at ISU, or Michigan for that matter. If you can't lead a team to an above .500 record for at least one year, you don't even deserve to be mentioned, let alone drafted by the NFL. Its always good to see the "small guy" from the FCS school do well. But Gutieriez in my mind won't do much at all.

Speaking of QBs, what happened to Jon Grant of UC Davis? It seems like he lost a lot of pro interest that he was generating before the 2006 season. Thought someone might want to give Grant a look.

No doubt that Murrietta was a great college QB (particularly in his freshman and senior years), but his size impacted the interest that NFL teams had in him (I hate the one-size, fits-all mentality of the NFL. He also had a reputation for much of his career for a less-than-stellar work ethic. He was said to have changed that his senior year, but that may have hampered his chances, too.

I'd also like to know why no one has given Chris Hunsaker, LB from NAU a shot. 2nd team All-American who led the nation in TFL and 3rd in sacks. He is bigger, faster and stronger than Pago from ISU and he signed with somebody.

any thoughts?

Just think how many games he could have won if he had come home to California and played for Cal Poly (and with his younger brother who was on the Cal Poly team in 2006) instead of ISU. I know that Cal Poly does not a big passing offense, but he would of had 6'6" Ramses Barden to throw to and James Noble to hand off to not to mention one of the better defenses to get him the ball in good scoring position. That is a position that Cal Poly really struggled at last year and he would have been very welcomed as a Mustang.

Mr. C:

*YSU 1990-1999
-9 Winning seasons
-6 Title Games
-4 National Titles including back-to-back & 3 of 4 years. (should have been 4 straight but that is another issue).
-Obviously many, many All-Americans played during those years & some tremendous talent.

*Only 2 NFL draftees in that period of time 1992 & 1997...one each year. This is I-AA, not Ohio State or Miami (FL)...and I do not mean that to sound degrading to fka-IAA. However, of the 4 Penguins that played multiple years in NFL during that same period of time ... 3 of them were not drafted; they were given a chance though. There is no respect, it is a fact we all have to live with.

Consider a couple of things ...Marcus Mason was a dominant force in I-AA rushing last year, yet I-AA and IA backs were drafted without the rushing backfield talent-level of Mason (in my opinion of course). Why? Most-likely it was because Mason did not return kicks/punts, or catch with any frequency out of the backfield. Also, he did not play in the Penn State game, so scouts could see him against major talent.. Had he been a successful return man, or had great hands at TB, he may have gone late in the draft...maybe not. Had he put up 100+ yards against the Nitany Lions, I feel he would have gone on late day 1 or early day 2. Think about this as well, Kent State led the MAC in the 90's in terms of players in the NFL, yet I don't think they had a winning season the entire time. What does this mean? If you have the talent, they will find you. Players want to go IA/BCS, even if they are on a team with limited success. So, we have to happy with what we can get, and applaud those players that get invites ...at least it is a chance. App State really has no strong historical national reputation in terms of football ...it is those back-to-back titles that are cementing the reputation, and will get those players the pro signings and invites though.

Excactly. He would be HANDING OFF to Noble, in other words somebody else would be winning the game. ISU had enough talent at WR to get something done. It was just that Gutieriez didn't have the game presence (or talent even) to win. You were better off without him.

As a Skins fan here's hoping that Mason proves himself NFL worthy.....

Wuddya know!? Something I can agree on with an App St fan! :D

I think he'll struggle to make the practice squad. The main reason the Skins picked him up is because of his local area ties I think. Mason had a great career at YSU, but I don't think he was the most talented back in I-AA by any means, nor is he the prototype NFL size, etc.

Sorry, just being objective. The same can be said about our beloved QB Justin Rascati and the Chicago Bears in terms of size, etc.

I'll still be rooting for him though! xthumbsupx

Wait, I thought he got drafted in the 4th round? It is a shame these players listen to the wrong people on their draft status. He is a heck of a player who deserves to be in an NFL camp but he was sold a bill of goods by the wrong person and bought it so it seems. Just a shame....
That was really a cheap shot SCFBF. You didn't need to spout that kind of smack on this thread. Hey congratulate the kid on getting a chance to play somewhere. He can play in the CFL and continue to develop. This is a kid with good athletic skill and a big upside. He has only been playing WR for two years and was already the leading receiver on the national championship squad. He has some football lefy in him.

Not meaning to be a cheap shot at the kid. It is a shot at those who try to tell these players the wrong things. People tell players what they want to hear and these players listen to it. Players need to stop listening to fans and listen to those in the know. Most of the things said on message boards such as that he said and she said stuff is not known to be fact and really does need to be kept out of public view.

Mayfield is a very good player who deserves a chance at the next level. I just heard that he listened somewhat to those who told him lies and I hate that he did because they just set him up for a let down. I wish him the best and hope that players don't listen to all that garbage posted on the internet heading into the draft. They need to listen to people who are actually in the know and not those who pretend to be.

Waiting to either hear from the direct source or see an article. As of a few hours ago I saw nothing other than a report on here. I want to make sure each signing is confirmed before I add it to ensure that I don't have to go back and make a change to it later.

Here you go. For future reference, anything posted on the Bison Media Blog is legite. Those are the 2 reporters who cover the Bison, they use that blog to give us Bison fans a heads up on whats going on before the report is in the newspaper or on TV. We didn't post the forum article, because the Media blog had already been posted. We give both equal wait.

Several former Grambling State standouts from the 2006 season participated in NFL rookie mini-camps this weekend. Cornerback Greg Fassitt spent three days with the Chicago Bears while running back Ab Kuuan and safety Bryan Langford practiced with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The duo of linebacker David Hicks and wide receiver Henry Tolbert ventured to Cincinnati , Ohio and worked out with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hey SCFBF, do you have the complete list of FA signings? (even those yucky FBS guys.)

FBS guys aren't yucky, I don't know why anyone would hate them. Now if you just like the FCS better there is nothing wrong with that. Why would anyone hate the FBS players? Many of them end up in the FCS ranks anyway... :)
