Has there ever been a players preseason poll?

I know the Big Sky sends two players from each team, along with coaches and media to a preseason conference event. This is where the preseason coaches poll and media polls are done. Why isn't there a preseason players poll performed at the same time?

I think it would be interesting to see who the players pick as the favorite to win their conference. (They would not be allowed to pick their own team anywhere in the poll.)

What are thoughts on this idea?

I don't think it would have any value. Players don't keep up with what is going on in terms of off-season changes of other teams so much. They just would not have the knowledge to know and would throw darts at the wall even more than some media are accused of doing.

Informational value, maybe...entertainment value, absolutely.

Players have a lot of to offer in terms of knowing team schemes/philosophies and how opponents execute these. Players also know a lot about matchups and who is returning/lost. Where they are in the dark is the same as where we are in the dark...out of conference teams they have not faced and new personnel and how they will perform. I would say during the season, players doing a poll would probably not be useful due to their focus on themselves and the next opponent, but for preseason, what the heck?

I dont see any real purpose much less value in doing a players poll. We got enough bias and representative democracy in most polls as is. Why would a player know about anything outside their conference or schedule ?

They should focus on their football team and classes.

NCAA would probably frown on such, also.

Players ranking Teams for publication would necessitate them to impute some measure of opining on games not involving their Teams, which starts to creep toward them providing (possibly) ‘inside’ information to those that might wager a shekel or 3 on the outcomes of those games, i.e., handicapping those games to some extent.

Just a speculation.

I'm sure the NCAA would probably suspend them for breaking some obscure rule if they did.

Agreed. Players are pretty focused on the team in front of them. Isn’t that the mantra for every team anywhere? Hell even peeking ahead to the next week causes the “trap game” scenario. It would be worse than the coaches poll IMO.

I do like the conference coaches poll .. now that is insightful stuff and way better than any national poll oozing with regional/conference bias

Players should focus on class/graduating and then field/team .. in that order and nothing else oustide of their own personal lives .. family, friends, faith. Keep it simple ... they are supposed to be college students first and foremost. And yes, this is not so veiled reference to other threads about allowing players to market themselves or be paid like employees by university.

They are college students .. leave them alone to be just that and don't glorify them any more than they already are. 98% of the D-I athletes will need to find real jobs when they are done playing the game they love as a college student.

Players should be focused on their own team and development, and maybe even their studies.
