Assistant Coach (OWR) Leonard Hankerson

Following a two-year stint at UMass where he helped develop one of the nation’s finest receivers, former NFL wide receiver Leonard Hankerson comes to east Texas to serve as SFA’s outside wide receivers coach.

Before joining head coach Colby Carthel’s staff in Nacogdoches, Hankerson was on head coach Mark Whipple’s staff at UMass where he spent the 2017 season as an offensive graduate assistant and served as a wide receivers coach during the 2018 season. A former player under Whipple during his memorable collegiate career at the University of Miami, Hankerson had a hand in prepping Andy Isabella who led the nation in receiving yards per game (141.5) and total reception yards (1,698) throughout his final season in a Minuteman uniform in 2018.

Under Hankerson’s guidance, Isabella finished his collegiate campaign with 3,526 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns on 231 grabs. Those numbers helped Isabella get chosen in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. With his second-round selection, Isabella stands as the highest-drafted UMass player in the program’s FBS era.

On the gridiron, Hankerson was a forced to be reckoned with throughout his collegiate career at Miami. Under the then-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach Whipple at The U in 2009 and 2010, Hankerson latched onto All-ACC First Team accolades as a result of his fine 2010 campaign. That year, Hankerson hauled in 72 receptions for 1,156 yards and 13 touchdowns which resulted in him being picked in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. To this day, Hankerson sits in third place all-time on Miami’s leaderboard with 22 touchdown grabs and in fifth place in both career receptions (134) and career receiving yards (2,160).

The 79th overall selection of that draft, Hankerson parlayed his college numbers into a five-year NFL career with stints on the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins. Through his NFL career, Hankerson amassed 1,408 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 107 receptions.

A graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Hankerson signed with the Hurricanes following a prep career that saw him generate 1,409 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns on 67 catches.

Hankerson is married to Kayla and is the father of five children – Leonard Hankerson III, Kienarria, Lenaris, Zara and Zoe. He resides in Nacogdoches.
