Assistant Coach (DT) Caid Faske

Caid Faske begins his time in Nacogdoches as SFA’s defensive ends coach with recruiting responsibilities in the DFW Metroplex area. Arriving at SFA from Texas A&M-Commerce, coach Faske was the defensive line coach for the Lions from 2015-18.

In addition to A&M-Commerce, Faske has made coaching stops at North Texas and West Texas A&M. All-told, Faske has coached 23 all-conference players, six All-Americans, multiple all-region selections and a national defensive player of the year throughout his coaching career. More than eight of Faske’s defensive linemen have gone on to play professionally in the NFL or CFL.

While at A&M-Commerce, Faske’s defensive line units were some of the best in the country in recording sacks and tackles for loss and in rush defense. The Lions averaged 32 sacks per season during Faske’s tenure in Commerce and ranked among the top 20 in the nation in both 2017 and 2018.

During the 2018 season, Faske’s defensive line was one of the top units in the country once again. The Lions made it to the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs and finished 10-3 on the year. A&M-Commerce’s defense finished sixth nationally in tackles for loss, seventh in third-down defense and 20th in total sacks (40). Leading the Lone Star Conference in sacks, the Lions owned the second-best scoring defense, passing defense and total defense in the league while third in rushing defense with only 3.3 yards per carry allowed. A&M-Commerce had five different linemen record at least three sacks, including Michael Onuoha who led the team with 6.5 sacks.

Under Faske’s tutelage, Michael Onuoha was named All-American First Team, second-team all-region and All-Lone Star Conference First Team after recording 6.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, an interception and 42 total tackles. DD Fletcher was tabbed named All-Lone Star Conference Second Team after posting three sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and claiming 37 total tackles, while Pierre Leonard was an All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention selection with four sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 53 tackles.

During the Lions’ 2017 national championship season, Faske’s defensive line was one of the top units in the country. A&M-Commerce owned the best pass defense in the Lone Star Conference and the second-best rush defense, while ranking 26th nationally and tops in the league in total defense. The Lions finished 20th in the nation in red zone defense and held opponents to just 3.1 yards per carry. One of the top teams in the country in terms of sacks, A&M-Commerce had five different linemen record at least three sacks, including three with at least five sacks, as Norman Moimoi’s 6.5 sacks led the way.

In 2017, Faske guided Michael Onuoha to All-Lone Star Conference First Team recognition with Onuoha recording five sacks, 12 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and 56 total tackles. DD Fletcher was named All-Lone Star Conference Second Team after posting three sacks and six tackles for loss, while Peyton Searcy was an All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention pick with four sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

With Faske leading the Lion defensive line in 2016, A&M-Commerce ranked fourth in the Lone Star Conference in rush defense, holding runners to less than four yards per carry, and finished second in the league and 23rd nationally in red zone defense. The Lions were 15th in the nation in scoring defense and second in defensive touchdowns scored as five different linemen recorded at least two sacks, four of which had at least five tackles for loss. Two of Faske’s linemen recorded an interception, helping A&M-Commerce rank fourth nationally in interceptions and lead all of Division II football in takeaways.

Tavita Faaiu led the team with 12 tackles for loss and eight sacks, garnering All-Super Region First Team and All-Lone Star Conference First Team honors under Faske’s coaching. Kieston Carter led the Lone Star Conference and was sixth in the nation with four fumble recoveries en route to all-conference honorable mention acclaim, helping the Lions lead the nation in turnovers. Michael Onuoha and Adam Sagapolu also received all-conference honorable mention recognition in 2016.

Faske helped produce one of the best defensive lines in the country in 2015, aiding A&M-Commerce in having the 23rd-best rush defense in the nation. Under Faske’s direction, the Lions ranked at the top of the Lone Star Conference in rush defense, scoring defense and total defense, while second in the league in sacks. During his first season in Commerce, Faske was instrumental in the development of two All-Lone Star Conference performers in first-team member Toni Pulu and second-team selection Tyree Barton. Pulu also received an All-Region Second Team nod following the 2015 season, while defensive linemen Kieston Carter and Tre’Von Taylor were tabbed All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention.

Prior to his move to Commerce, Faske spent part of the spring of 2015 at FBS North Texas as a defensive assistant, assisting with recruiting and helping coach the defensive line. Before North Texas, Faske spent three seasons at Lone Star Conference rival West Texas A&M where he coached the Buffs' defensive line and recruited in the west Texas area.

Faske joined the coaching staff after playing for the Buffs as his playing career was cut short due to health issues. During his first year on staff, Faske coached three first-team all-conference defensive linemen, including defensive tackle Aaron Wampler and All-American defensive ends Ethan Westbrooks and Tyrell Higgins in 2012.

Under his tutelage in 2012, Faske helped mold Westbrooks into leading the nation with 19.5 sacks on his way to being named Daktronics National Defensive Player of the Year. The West Texas A&M defense accumulated a nation-leading 59 sacks with SFA head coach Colby Carthel serving as defensive coordinator for the Buffs that season. Westbrooks returned to West Texas A&M in 2013 and again was named an All-American as Faske also coached LaPear Willrich and Alex Tucci to All-Lone Star Conference accolades. In 2014, the trio of LaPear Willrich, Alex Tucci and Iosia Iosia were All-Lone Star Conference performers for the Buffs under the guidance of Faske.

Faske graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports exercise science from West Texas A&M in 2014 and earned a Master of Science degree in athletic administration from A&M-Commerce.

Attending Bushland High School, Faske was an all-district offensive and defensive lineman for two-straight seasons and helped lead the team to a 15-1 record and a state championship berth.

A native of Bushland, Texas, Faske is married to the former Shylo Manasco. The two have a daughter, Aniston Renee.
