Assistant Coach (OL) Nathan Young
Nathan Young joined head coach Colby Carthel’s staff as SFA’s offensive line coach in January of 2019 after serving as the offensive coordinator at James Madison High School in San Antonio for two seasons (2017-18). Coach Young returns to the Southland Conference after spending four seasons as fellow league member Abilene Christian’s offensive coordinator from 2013-16.
A former All-American offensive guard for the Wildcats and 2017 ACU Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Young spent a total of nine seasons coaching at ACU (2008-16).
During his time at Class 6A James Madison, Young helped lead the Mavericks to a 13-10 overall record, including a 9-3 mark in 2018 and a University Interscholastic League (UIL) state playoff opening round win.
In his final two seasons coaching in Abilene, Young was responsible for the Wildcats’ tight ends, h-backs and fullbacks in addition to his offensive play-calling duties. He spent three seasons (2012-14) coaching ACU’s running backs and served as the offensive line coach for four years (2008-11) after a successful four-year playing career in Abilene (2004-07). Young worked side-by-side with former ACU head coach Ken Collums (2012-16) while an offensive coordinator after working under lead man Chris Thomsen from 2008-11.
In 2016, despite ACU winning just two games, Young’s offense saw success within the Southland. The Wildcat passing game ranked fourth in the league (278.5 YPG) as ACU’s total offense (391.6 YPG) was sixth and scoring (26.8 PPG) seventh. That season, both redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Riley Mayfield and sophomore offensive lineman Dakota Laws drew All-Southland honorable mention acclaim. Young directed a Wildcat offense that fought through a myriad of injuries in 2015 to average 358.8 yards and 24.7 points per game. ACU had its best offensive output of the year in the season finale at Northern Colorado, racking up 548 yards offense with 218 yards on the ground and 330 through the air. Senior offensive lineman Codey Funk picked up All-Southland Second Team honors, while sophomore running back De’Andre Brown, senior tight end Jamie Walker and senior wide receiver Cedric Gilbert collected All-Southland honorable mention plaudits.
In the Wildcats’ first season as fully-fledged members of the Southland at the FCS level in 2014, Young’s play calling helped lead ACU to a 6-6 overall record and a 4-4 conference mark. The Wildcats finished tied for fifth in the league after a season-ending 37-35 road win in Nacogdoches over the nationally-ranked Lumberjacks. Under Young’s direction, sophomore quarterback Parker McKenzie threw for 3,084 yards and 22 touchdowns, earning honorable mention all-conference honors and becoming the fourth-straight ACU starting quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season. The Wildcats were again one of the best teams in the conference and in the nation in turnover ratio as ACU was plus-nine in that category, while among Southland leaders in points per game (32.7), yards per game (438), passing yards per game (275.3) and rushing yards per game (162.7).
In 2013, the Wildcats’ first year at the FCS level, ACU put one of the nation’s top offensive units on the field. The Wildcats’ 501 points scored were the fourth-most in a season in program history behind 2007 (639 points), 2008 (628 points) and 2010 (520 points). ACU’s 84 points scored against Concordia College (Ala.) in the season-opener were the second-most points scored in a game in program history. The Wildcats scored at least 60 points in four games during the season, hitting the 50-point mark in one other game and the 40-point mark in another, while posting a plus-17 turnover margin for one of the top marks in all of FCS football. For the fifth time since 2007, ACU posted at least 5,300 yards of total offense as the Wildcats finished with 5,359 total yards for an average of 487.2 yards per game.
In charge of the running backs, Young coached senior Charcandrick West to one of the great careers in ACU history. West finished his quietly productive career as the only player in Wildcat football history to finish with at least 2,000 rushing yards, 1,000 receiving yards and 750 kickoff return yards in a career. West claimed 2,058 rushing yards to rank 10th on ACU’s career list, notched 1,007 receiving yards and posted 758 kickoff return yards. His 3,823 career all-purpose yards were fifth on the Wildcats’ all-time list as he finished his career with 35 touchdowns (fourth on the all-time touchdown list) and 210 career points scored (sixth on the all-time career points list).
Under Young’s guidance in 2011, the Wildcat offensive line led an offense that ranked in the top five in the nation in both total offense and passing offense. The offensive line featured two first-team All-Lone Star Conference performers in center Matt Webber and left tackle Neal Tivis, as well as second-teamer Josh Perez and honorable mention selections Blake Spears and Jerod Harrell. With Young’s help in 2010, ACU’s offensive line led an offense that finished second in the nation in scoring, seventh in total offense and ninth in passing. The line paved the way for sophomore quarterback Mitchell Gale to throw a single-season school record 38 touchdowns and become one of eight national finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given annually to the top player in NCAA Division II football. Senior guard Royland Tubbs was voted the co-Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Lone Star Conference South Division, and three-year starter at right tackle, Trevis Turner, signed a free-agent contract with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
The 2009 version of Young’s offensive line blocked for the second-best rushing attack in the Lone Star Conference (170.4 YPG) as junior guard Tubbs and senior tackle Tony Washington picked up All-Lone Star Conference South Division First Team accolades. Washington was tabbed Lone Star Conference South Division Offensive Lineman of the Year, while sophomore center Matt Webber claimed All-Lone Star Conference South Division Second Team honors and senior guard Levi Wolfe and junior tackle Turner earned all-conference honorable mention.
Young’s offensive line in 2008 allowed just eight sacks in 12 games and finished second in the nation in sacks allowed per game (0.67). The ACU offensive line also paved the way for running back Bernard Scott to rush for 2,156 yards on his way to winning the Harlon Hill Trophy. Young also coached his former teammate, Sam Collins, who won the Gene Upshaw Award as the top lineman in Division II and the Dave Rimington Award as the nation’s top center. Collins, senior guard Joseph Thompson and junior tackle Washington each earned All-Lone Star Conference South Division First Team honors and were all named to an All-America team. Sophomores Tubbs and Turner both picked second-team all-conference accolades as well.
After his senior season in 2007, Young was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team selection. A two-time Lone Star Conference South Division Offensive Lineman of the Year in both 2006 and 2007, Young was named NCAA Division II All-America First Team, NCAA All-Southwest Region First Team and All-Lone Star Conference South Division First Team. He was the key cog on an offensive line that allowed the fewest sacks (8) and fewest sacks per game (0.62) in Division II football.
During Young’s playing days, the Wildcat offensive line opened holes for running back Bernard Scott, who set two Division II single-season records - 234 points scored and 39 touchdowns - while rushing for a Lone Star Conference and ACU single-season record 2,165 yards. Scott went on to finish as the runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy. After starting 42 games in four years and helping the Wildcats to back-to-back Division II playoff appearances, Young was selected to play in the 2008 Valero Cactus Bowl in Kingsville, Texas, an all-star showcase for Division II seniors prior to the NFL Draft.
A three-year starter on the offensive line at Plainview High School, Young was team captain and a first-team all-district, Class 4A honorable mention all-state and academic first-team all-state performer.
Young graduated from ACU in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry before acquiring his master’s degree from ACU in 2010.
Coach Young is married to the former Alyson David, a former ACU women’s track and field student-athlete. The couple have two daughters, Saylor and Sloane, in addition to their son, Slade.
