Steve McNair of Alcorn State and Gordy Lockbaum of Holy Cross come to mind. McNair was third to Rashaan Salaam and Ki-Jana Carter in 1994. Lockbaum, the two-way star, was fifth when Vinny Testeverde won in 1986 and was third behind Tim Brown and Don McPherson in 1987.

Randy Moss and Chad Pennington were players who started their careers at Marshall as I-AA players and were Heisman Trophy candidates later on.

Didn't Moss bounce around a few schools?

Moss never played ANYWHERE but Marshall. He was released from a scholarship at Notre Dame while he was still in high school and signed with Florida State, but was kicked off the team after a failed drug test.

McQuilken wasn't a top-10 vote-getter in 1973.

...then he was traded to the Raiders and that fell through... :D

Actually, I like the guy. He's just a crazy guy and for some reason I like his craziness. Would never want to play on a team with him, but he makes for great entertainment, both good and bad.

McQuilken wasn't a top-10 vote-getter in 1973.

I think Mark vanEeghen also fell outside the Heisman top 10 in 1973, along with JJ Jennings of Rutgers.

So if Edwards runs for 1000 while throwing for 2000 three straight years, will he be mentioned for the Heisman?

I think the definition of finalist may have changed over the years. I'm going on our Lafayette/Lehigh Legends book which noted that he was the only Heisman finalist to come out of either school. (p. 247-248)xreadx

I am sure that definition has changed over the years... i am sure they have more finalists today than a long time ago because people want people to feel good

not true at all. How many people were actually invited to the ceremony. Quinn, Smith and McFadden. Those were the finalists.

I agree with that. Considering how little national attention Adrian Peterson received after his accomplishments in 98-99, I don't know how anyone from FCS can get folks' attention.
