Only about a hundred of the 353 teams have announced their schedules. This makes no sense to me- they want you to buy season tickets even before they announce how many games and who they will be playing. I just saw MSU-Mankato's schedule today.

Schedule for UNI not released yet, but we may actually have a healthy team this year.
Last year we lost the starting center for the year, lost the back up PF for half the year with stress fractures, starting 2 guard (that was the conference FOY the year before) for over half the season, the 2 guard that stepped in had back surgery in the summer before the season and wasn't truly healthy until late January and lost our back up PG to an ACL 13 games into the season. This year the only kids that are having injury issues right now are freshman that were going to redshirt anyway.
Team is currently in Italy playing a series of "All Star" teams. No idea what level of "All Star in "Italy" translates to in America. From what I've heard is it's one of the top two levels in Europe that these guys play in - it's the league/level that most American's play in when going over seas. So it seems like it's pretty good basketball overall

Seems strange to announce now. By announcing now they give up all chances of autobids for the coming year. I guess if that is their announcement they don't have to give them up, the Summit could let them keep them if they earn them, but I can't think of a single example of that happening.
Those announcements tend to happen in May right after softball and baseball conference tournaments.

The timing seems very strange. It can't be just a schedule announcement. I think that the IUPUI announcement was pretty late- like June- and yet the Summit let them go that year for volleyball and whatever. I realize it is a lot easier to move without football but even if it is for 2020-21 it still seems odd.
It has been pretty quiet on the Augie front. The last rumor that I heard was that they were hoping to announce something by December.

Northern Iowa Panthers
2019-2020 Overall Rank: #86
Conference Rank: #1 Missouri Valley
Projection:
AJ Green is coming off a great freshman campaign in which he averaged a team high 15.0 points per game. He is not shy about hoisting up shots from anywhere on the floor and it mostly worked out last year. That year of experience should lead to more consistency shooting the basketball. Trae Berhow, Isaiah Brown, Spencer Haldeman and Tywhon Pickford are all experienced upperclassmen on the perimeter. Berhow and Haldeman are prolific outside shooters, while Pickford is coming off a disappointing sophomore season. Brown is a big, versatile 6-7 guard who can attack the basket and help out in the rebounding department. While Brown is the perimeter player with size, it is Berhow who does a bulk of the work on the glass. Last season he led the team with 6.1 rebounds and his ability to rebound allows the Panthers to play a bit small. Luke McDonnell is often the only forward on the floor. The 6-9 senior is a consistent outside shooter who can stretch the defense. The return of Austin Phyfe, who missed much of last season with an injury, and the addition of freshmen Noah Carter and Cole Henry, will help bolster the frontcourt. Northern Iowa is always going to play tough defense, but they need a couple players to compliment Green in the scoring department. If they can find that, this group has the talent and experience to make a big jump up the MVC standings.

The MVC and OVC have now released their preseason polls.
MVC
1 Missouri St
2 Bradley
3 N Iowa
4 Loyola
5 Drake
6 INST
7 ILST
8 Evansville
9 Valpo
10 S Illinois
OVC
1 Belmont
2 Murray St
3 Jax St
4 Austin Peay
5 UT Martin
6 E Kentucky
7 E Illinois
8 Morehead St
9 TN State
10 SIUE
11 SE MO St
12 TN Tech
IMO any of the top 4 in the MVC could win it and any of the top 5 in the OVC could win it. Both leagues should be fairly wide open this season.
In my personal polls I picked Loyola and Belmont to win the regular season titles. Then I filled out brackets with my picks and have UNI and Murray St advancing to the NCAA tournament.

The MVC has looked pretty bad in most of the exhibition games so far. We'll see how the teams do once the regular season starts, but I'm not too optimistic at this point. Most don't expect much from SIU and Valpo this season. Evansville, Illinois State, and Drake did their best to lose against non-D1 schools. Loyola actually lost to a D2 school and trailed by double digits most of the game. Missouri State (the Valley favorite) only led by 2 at halftime against a D3 school. Indiana State and Northern Iowa don't have exhibition games this year. Bradley actually showed up against their D3 opponent and curb-stomped them.
Meanwhile the OVC has done a little better. APSU and JSU struggled with their opponents which was a little discouraging. However APSU had a second exhibition game last night and won big. EIU struggled with UMSL until late in the second half and went on a 16-0 run to end the game. EKU, Morehead, SEMO, SIUE, UTM, and TTU all destroyed their exhibition opponents. TSU and Belmont don't have any exhibition games, and Murray State plays theirs tomorrow.

That is certainly good to hear. How do you think you'll do against Old Dominion? I saw where they won the CUSA last season. Looks like it should probably be a good game.

Harvard will open the season against MIT once again. The Engineers only have ONE senior as well as ONE junior on the roster this season, with the roster comprising of mostly sophomores and first-year players. Looks like the Engineers' D-III tournament streak will stop this year, and Harvard will roll. (Last season, Harvard had MIT on the ropes, which is quite unusual.)

The Aaron McKie era at Temple begins with a 70-62 win over Philly foe Drexel. We should be in the mix for a NCAA Tourney bid this year given our talented backcourt. Not sure we have enough firepower to seriously threaten Memphis in conference play. The Tigers are loaded. Wichita State is probably Memphis's biggest challenger.
Temple, Cincinnati, UConn and Wichita State should all be pretty good to legitimately good. UCF is the wildcard. The AAC will be anywhere from a 3 to 5 bid league.

F: Nana Antwi-Boasiako 6-9; 225 *** (Rivals)I have some pretty serious questions regarding stars in general (remember, I worked for Rivals for a while), and I take nothing away from these kids...but...these star rankings are garbage
Posey is a classic case of large schools offering 30+ kids with non-committable offers. All 3 of his big offers came within 3 days of each other over a year ago. The offers he picked up since then? Tulsa, UL-L, North Texas, UTA, Troy, ORU, Colorado State. I went and looked at TCU - one of the offers that boosted his ranking. They hTCU has offered 17 players at that poisition in this HS SR class. In this years JR class they have 19 offers open right now at the same position and 12 in the HS sophomore class. TCU has offered at least 17 players at that position in this HS SR class. In this years JR class they have 19 offers open right now at the same position and 12 in the HS sophomore class. His offer from them is like 15 months old. He doesn't have an offer from them. He probably never had an actually committable offer at all.
Heckard is a 3 star somehow and he never even got non-committable offers. His offers were Bethune-Cookman, Coppin State, Drake, Southern and then D2 schools of Lewis, Maryville and Emporia State
Nana Antwi-Boasiako is somehow a 3 star and SFA was literally his only offer.
Maybe they are all diamonds that the big schools completely whiffed on. However, every single year I see SFA signs 4 or 5 kids that are 3* or higher in basketball and...it's just...it's exposing just how dumb star systems are

Well, so long for Montana's run at being a solid mid-major program. They just lost to NAIA Montana Tech. Maybe the football and basketball teams can't both be good in the same season. The year Montana beat Nevada in the NCAA tournament, the football team flamed out in the first round of the playoffs after a sub-par year.
"Hey Griz fan, it's just an exhibition loss." you say? Half false. It was a real regular season game for Montana. Unfortunately for Tech's resume, it was an exhibition game for them, haha. They're still 3-3 on the season.

Lost a ton of focus (as you'd expect) and played three true Freshman, a walk on senior and a senior that won't play much (and had 2 minutes in the season) much of the second half
Cornell throws in a bunch of garbage 3s late
UNI still wins big
You can see the point of "giving up" in the game flow. The final 10 min of the game saw Cornell score 1/3 their points and UNI score just 7

It happens quite a bit - especially at the MM and LM levels when trying to get home games
Especially in a year where you skip exhibition games for closed scrimmages.

But basketball plays alot more games than football in a season, so I suppose it doesn't matter quite as much
Basketball is strange in that computer metrics don't count D2 and lower games
RPI doesn't count them. They don't exist. They don't exist on team sheets come selection Sunday, though I suppose a loss would show up and hurt...though my guess is if you lose to a non-D1 you aren't making the tournament outside of winning a bad/LM conference tournament, at which point you're a 15 or 16 anyway.
So you can buy a SWAC/MEAC/NEC/Big West/SLC/SoCon/etc. team to come in. It is a D1 game so it is "better". However, in all likelihood they going to be a 250-300 or worse RPI team. So in the metrics beating them by 30 actually HURTS your standing in the RPI and other metrics.
Call it a bit of a flaw in the computers but it's better to play a top 150 and lose (closely...or even not closely in the case of a top 50-75) than to play and beat a bottom 100 team by 30.
There are some sites that let you take the current schedule and set the future results (win/loss) and see how it would impact your predicted RPI/SOS, even lets you replace the opponents with another team. I spent a lot of time with it a couple years ago and it's pretty crazy how quickly rankings can shift by simply removing the bottom one or two RPI opponents and leaving it that way (essentially a non D1 game).

Congrats SFA! What a monumental win... I love seeing Duke lose to anybody but at home to a mid-major is even better. That's just an incredible program they've built at SFA.
The betting line on this game fluctuated from Duke -27.5 to -29 before tip off. I saw that the money line bet on SFA was as high as +9000 ($100 bet on SFA to win netted you $9000). Waiting for some good stories today from the sports books... either about people winning a load of money with a relatively small bet or people losing a load of money on a big bet (that would've won them very little relative to their bet had Duke won).

I would drive to and from Syracuse games (120 miles one way) in gnarly weather. Likewise back and forth from Temple (140 miles one way) through the Pocono Mountains in the winter. To be fair this was before weather apps and what not so you just kind of winged it. Even so, now if there's a threat of more than an inch or two i'll stay home. I attended my first college basketball game of the season today (Saturday 12/7), a somewhat late first game by my standards. La Salle beat host Drexel 71-63 in a Philadelphia City Six matchup. The Explorers never trailed in the game, but the Dragons to their credit never quit after a sloppy first half that left them trailing by 15 points (38-23) at halftime. Drexel pulled within 6 points with about 2 minutes left in regulation, but La Salle was able to hold their city rivals at bay to grab the victory.
My next college basketball game will almost definitely be Penn/Howard on Monday 12/30, followed closely by Lehigh/Navy on Thursday 1/2.
Incidentally, the La Salle/Drexel game was the first half of a college/pro basketball doubleheader for me; in the nightcap the 76ers annihilated the Cavaliers 141-94 in NBA action. The hosts from Philadelphia set an all-time franchise record by enjoying a 41 point halftime lead (77-36), and reached the 100 point mark with 3+ minutes left in the 3rd quarter (which was about the time the starters were pulled from the rest of the game). Ben Simmons had one of the best games of his career, scoring 34 points in less than 3 quarters, and hit the second 3-pointer of his NBA career. (I’ve seen the bad Ben Simmons multiple times in person, so it was good to see the good Ben Simmons in this game.) Eight different 76ers players hit at least one 3 point shot in the game. (FWIW, this was the third NBA game I’ve attended in an 8 day period; I previously attended the Jazz/Grizzlies game in Memphis on Friday 11/29 and the 76ers/Wizards game in Washington on Thursday 12/5.)

In a game I attended tonight (Thursday 1/2) in Annapolis, Navy edged by Lehigh 64-58. The Mountain Hawks played hard, but this is probably the least talented Lehigh team in Brett Reed's decade plus tenure. LU really struggles to get good shots offensively.
There are some BAD Patriot League teams this season. This is definitely the worst Lehigh team I recall since the Sal days of the late 90's. Holy Cross might be one of the 15-20 worst teams in the country. I can't believe how Carmody drove that program into the ground before he quit.
Bucknell seems middling at best and outside Colgate's win over Cincinnati the Raiders have underachieved.

Temple got run out of Tulsa last night by the Golden Hurricanes. There were very few positives to draw from in the 70-44 beatdown. The Owls have stumbled the last 2-3 weeks after a strong start to the season. At 9-4 and 1-1 in the AAC we need to rack up some wins to put ourselves in a good spot come March....
A win against 11-3 Houston Tuesday night in Philly would be the perfect bounce back....

Great win for Temple last night against the 16th ranked Shockers! I've been crazy busy the last week but found enough time to catch most of the game. I'm not totally "Shocked" Temple won given our play the first 6 weeks of the season and the fact Wichita State seemed kind of due for a loss. What surprised me is the fact we out toughed them for the "W". The Owls have been Charmin soft to start conference play. Temple needs to build of this win by going down to the Metroplex and taking care of SMU. If we beat the Mustangs I'm likely headed to Philly next week for our annual rock fight with Cincinnati.
Lehigh lost to Navy 88-83. I also saw Bucknell and Colgate lost in PL play. The Leopards might end up sneaking in stealing the show. The PL winner seems destined for a 16 seed and maybe even a First 4 date.
People need to start paying attention to FCS'er Dayton. The Flyers are REALLY good this year. Toppin reminds me of Blake Griffin at Oklahoma. Dude just runs the show down low....

Votes have been slow to come to UNI this year. That loss to Illinois State really really really hurt UNI in the eyes of voters, and the fact Illinois State is now 1-5 in Valley play isn't helping voters get past it - even though UNI is 16-2 and 5-1
Currently at 29th though. 42 points from being officially ranked.
Another big week for UNI.
SIU on Wednesday in Carbondale. A team down on talent but Brian Mullins (who was the key lead assistant for Loyola during their run) has come home to Carbondale and in his first year has them going the right way. Down on talent and injuries have them down on bodies even. However, he has them playing INSANELY hard. He's going to get that turned around real quick.
Get passed that one and next sunday on ESPNU we will have another first place show down as UNI would be 17-2 6-1 going into a home match up vs Loyola who would be 14-6 6-1.

What an ugly night for college hoops! With football nearing its end this is the time of year ESPN, Fox and CBS really start to ramp of their coverage. What happened tonight in West Lafayette and Lawrence is quite simply sad. The Illinois player literally pulled a Laettner with perhaps a little extra "hot sauce".
The Kansas vs K-State brawl is eerily similar to the Malice in the Palace given the fact the players entered into the crowd and people clearly got physically knocked around. Obviously it wasn't quite to that level but that's about as bad as I've seen in a college bball game. The Cincinnati-Xavier brawl several years ago was also really bad.

JMU and NDSU need to take a page out of the UNI playbook! Panther hoops is a great asset for the school in terms of national respectability and visibility. They're going to be ranked! I know I keep saying it but it's going to happen and when it does it will be during the most important time of the year, February/March.
What's interesting is the fact that UNI is good at 3 of the 6 (Football, M Bball, W Bball, Baseball, M Hockey, Wrestling) or so sports that matter when it comes to fan/alumni support and institutional bragging rights. There's not THAT many (50?) D1 schools who can say that.

UNI’s pretty solid at WBB as well. Not Drake or South Dakota State levels of top 25 caliber yearly. However, they’ve gotten top 25 votes as recently as last season. They’ve gotten at large bids to the NCAA tournament, been in the title game of the conference tournament something like 6 or 7 times in the last 11 years.
Volleyball isn’t always thought as a “big sport (though I'd argue it larger than hockey nationally)” but UNI is consistently a top 15-20 program every single season. Top 10 in attendance almost yearly. Coach is top 10 in NCAA winning percentage and/or wins for a career (I believe). Multiple S16s, NCAA tournament every year, hosting NCAA tournaments, etc.
UNI's ROI on athletics is pretty damn solid. Small fan base completely swallowed by Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin all being less than 4 hours from campus. However, the results we get for the money we spend are as good as anyone nationally I'd guess.

Harvard at Yale was one of the most absurd games I've seen all year! Yale makes a crazy rally the last 3 minutes just to make it interesting. Then with 2.1 seconds left down 4 a Yale player banks in a 3 and gets fouled. Unfortunately, for Yale he missed the foul shot and Harvard hangs on.
I feel bad for the kid who missed the foul shot. He had to wait a few minutes to shoot while the officials d*cked around at the scorers table trying to figure out the clock.

That was absolutely absurd! The ending of regulation and OT were ridiculous!! This is right up there with the 1995 game! The UNC players have to be beyond sick. They played so well but couldn't close the deal.
My one gripe is the refs really f'd up by not calling a foul at the end of OT when Playtek (sp??) was knocked into by a Duke player. I thought the refs might do the "right thing" and award UNC the ball. But they stuck with the ruling on the court, out on UNC. Interesting that sequence happened right in front of the Duke bench....

I attended two games on Saturday 2/8:
*In the first of the two games, Temple roared back from a 17 point halftime deficit to surprise SMU in overtime, 97-90, in an AAC game. The Mustangs used a 22-5 run in the 1st half to take a 19 point lead, and led 48-31 at the break. However, the Owls gradually climbed back into the game in the latter 2/3 of the 2nd half, and actually took a 3 point lead (80-77) with 25 seconds left in regulation before SMU's Tyson Jolly made 3 clutch free throws with 13 seconds left to tie the game and Temple was unable to get a good shot at the end of regulation. In the overtime, the teams traded baskets for the first couple of minutes before the Owls came up big in the last two minutes to cap their comeback. Quinton Rose scored 25 points and pulled down 8 rebounds for the winners, playing a particularly big role in overtime, and Monty Scott came off the bench to pour in 22 points and hand out a tied for team high 6 assists. Kendrick Davis posted a double-double (23 points, 10 assists) in his team's losing effort.
*In the second of the two games, host La Salle took control early and never was seriously threatened the remainder of the game, beating Philadelphia Big Five and Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's 83-66. The Explorers used hot shooting and tenacious defense (SJU had 17 turnovers in the game) to go on a 15-0 run in the middle of the 1st half to take a 17 point lead. Though the Hawks were able to cut the deficit to 10 points a couple times late in the half, La Salle hit a buzzer beating 3 pointer to that allowed them to enjoy a 14 point halftime lead (43-29). In the 2nd half, St. Joe's shot a little better, but never pulled closer than 9 points for the remainder of the game as the Explorers answered every comeback attempt and kept their long time, Philadelphia rivals at bay. David Beatty led a balanced attack for La Salle, scoring a team leading 18 points as the Explorers had five players reach double figures in scoring. Ed Croswell also played a big role on both ends of the floor in the win and finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds coming off the bench. For St. Joe's, Ryan Daly tried his best to keep the Hawks close, leading all scorers with 26 points (16 in the 1st half) and also pulling down 6 rebounds from the guard spot, though he also had 5 turnovers.

Evansville is still winless in MVC play on both the mens and womens side. Women at 0-11 men are 0-12
Their women will not win a game. They are losing by like 25 PPG.
Their men's team has been playing better but they really have maybe 1 actually winnable game. They have the top 4 teams in the Valley left, 6th place Drake and then 9th place Illinois State
They, in all likelihood, are going to have their mens and womens teams go winless in conference play, 0-36 combined in the same season. That is so impossibly historic it's actually incomprehensible.
In the 117 year history of the MVC there have been 19 winless in conference play seasons on the mens side
10 belong to Drake - though 8 of them shouldn't actually count because of how sports were structured that long ago, but **** Drake it's more fun to say they have 10 winless seasons and more than half of all of them.
Drake 1907-1908
Missouri 1907-1908 - N/S split and Drake and Missouri didn't play
Drake 1909-1910
Drake 1910-1911
Drake 1911-1912
Drake 1912-1913
Drake 1913-1914
Drake 1916-1917
Drake 1917-1918
Grinnell 1928-1929
Tulsa 1942-1943
Tulsa 1948-1949
North Texas 1965-1966
Memphis 1968-1969
SIU 1980-1981
INSU 1988-1989
Drake 1996-1997
Drake 1997-1998
There have been 3 winless seasons for the women's which stated in 82/83
Bradley 1998-1999
SIU 2010-2011
Evansville 2017-2018
Should UE pull the feat off this year it will be the first time in history we've had 2 winless teams in one season, which of course means it's the first time it was the same school to have both.
They wouldn't be the first to have the men's and women's teams to have winless seasons though - SIU has accomplished that.
The combined number of 4 or less win seasons UE has between mens and womens is also insanely stupid to try to comprehend.

The RPI has UNI at like 15

The NET has been designed to make it so little guys can't get ranked

Beat South Carolina
Apparently losing to a team in your conference isn't allowed if you aren't a P5 team anymore. Which is real ironic considering how often Palm, Katz, Bilas, etc. have a come back to people on twitter asking "How could this 8th place team be in your ranking/bracket. They are 4 games under .500 in conference play" and the answer is "Conference record doesn't matter"....

if he took more than 28 seconds, then even if he had made the shot before the MC finished the countdown, it wouldn't have been within the 24 seconds. seems pretty deceptive to me.
Have a visible clock showing the time. And clarify whether the final shot has to be taken within that timeframe (which is how the game of basketball works) or if the shot has to actually go through the hoop before that time expires.
