WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Lee Mazzilli Thursday, deciding to change direction amid the club's free-fall from the top of the standings.

Peter Angelos is your typical lawyer scum. I guess it Mazzilli's fault that Angelos didn't add any pitching, or offense when the Os needed it. Mazzilli's biggest sin was managing so well that he raised Orioles' expectations by having them in first place earlier in the season.

Agreed. I think he's gonna be a very good, possibly great manager someday. hopefully he'll land in the right situation.

Bum rap, if you ask me. The O's overachieved for half a season with their young talent.

Anyone think it could be fallout from the Palmeiro situation? The O's have been sliding for awhile and the Palmeiro thing just broke recently.

I wondered if they might be trying to take some of the attention off of the Palmeiro thing by deciding to fire Mazzilli.

The O's will never win as long as Angelos is in charge. Angelos had a chance to sign as a free agent, a great Cuban pitcher. He refused so as not to tick off Fidel Castro!!. The guy is more interested in being politically correct then bringing a winner to Baltimore. This is a shame because Baltimore is one of the great sports towns in the U.S. The fans will always support the locals.

Camden Yards is one of the great baseball venues and the crab cakes at the "Yard" are exceptional.

For those of us who remember the Brooks Robinson/Frank Robinson O's. This is a very sad decline.

That firing was absolutely stupid! The O's pitching went downhill and they started to lose so if anyone should lose their job it should be the GM for not making the moves they needed to at the trade deadline.

Peter Angelos is not Bill Bidwell. There's no one to compare to Bill Bidwell. The Orioles have won under Angelos...just not recently. Still, Mazzilli did a hell of a job, and should be a top prize manager candidate for other clubs in the league. It's really difficult to understand this. My real question is: why is A.J. Burnett not in an Orioles uniform? I mean, at this point that wouldn't matter. But back when the O's were winning. Burnett has pitched extremely well since the rumor mill started.

Angelos could find the answer to that and many other questions by taking a look in his mirror!!! It puzzles me how a team sitting atop the division right before the all star break makes no move to bolster a young and already depleted pitching staff
