The Patriots are hoping for a strong performance by backup QB Matt Cassell in training camp so they can deal him before the season. Theres no logic in holding back a QB because you have a Hall of Famer in Tom Brady.
To do this the Patriots will have to add a new young QB to the mix and eventually a solid veteran as insurance much like it has the past few years with Doug Flutie and Vinny Testeverde.
So who could be the lucky young QB?
From todays Boston Globe they have this brief bit labeling Matt Gutierrez as a Patriots type player among a handful of others. Gutierrez was the only FCS player mentioned.
Quarterback
Matt Gutierrez (Idaho State) -- After never losing a game at De La Salle (Calif.) High School, Gutierrez (6 feet 4 inches, 232 pounds) enrolled at Michigan and was the 2004 opening day starter before a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder sidelined him. He gave way to Chad Henne and later transferred to Division 1-AA Idaho State. Projected pick: late rounds/free agent.
