University of the Incarnate Word president Louis Agnese will announce today the school is starting a football program, sources told the San Antonio Express-News on Monday.

Sources said (New Orleans Saints owner Tom) Benson, whose business empire is headquartered in San Antonio, is donating money to get the program started. The plans, sources said, call for the school to kick off its first season as early as 2009.

Tentative plans also call for a facility with approximately 3,000 seats to be built on campus on the site of the soccer field, adjacent to the McDermott Center, sources said. Benson's name likely would be attached to the facility.

UIW is a member of the non-football playing, Division II Heartland Conference.

Coastal's strength coach for baseball is a graduate of UIW. I'd never heard of it before I read his bio.

Religious reasons, maybe? xconfusedx

I guess, I wonder if he'll become delusional and try and get them into D-I

Already got this covered on the UTSA thread...

Regardless, I'm not sure Incarnate Word is in position to go into the LSC. They'll stick to the Heartland Conference. It is good to see scholarship football in San Antonio. Perhaps UTSA will take notice!

My first job out of college was at an institution with religious ties that had the mascot of the Blue Devil. There had been several attempts to get rid of it. The only thing they succeeded in was not having a school image with the Blue Devil, but instead heavily pushed just the initials of the school in each image promoting the school...

The existing, non-existent mascot...

soon to have a campus in my town:

(GOODYEAR) – The City of Goodyear has taken a major step toward becoming the home of a private institute of higher learning by agreeing to lease 20 acres of City-owned land to the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) at a cost of $1/year for 30 years. The site is within a 100-acre park site adjacent to Goodyear’s future City Center.

Arizona is strangely absent of private, four-year traditional colleges - Grand Canyon U is about the only one in the state.

I wish I was online to answer the Cardinals question, ask me any college nickname even NCCAA and USCAA and I can tell you. I e-mailed that smargon college nickname website guy and showed him the 20 or so updates he need to put in. He didn't e-mail me back. Only way I wouldn't know is if the school just changed their nickname and I didn't hear about it

A familiar face to those in the SLC is looking at Incarnate Word...
----------------
Incarnate Word football: Looking for a second chance, former Texas State coach Manny Matsakis said he has applied for the UIW job.

Matsakis might be considered a long shot considering he was fired following an investigation that uncovered 12 secondary NCAA violations after one season at Texas State in 2003, when the Bobcats finished 4-8.

Matsakis, 45, lives in Columbus, Ohio, and runs a college football magazine publications firm known as Big Season Sports.

He recruited former Texas State standouts Barrick Nealy and Fred Evans to San Marcos.

UIW interviews former McN asst, SFA head coach...Mike Santiago...

Football: Incarnate Word interviews third finalist

Bobby Keasler hired Mike Santiago to be the offensive coordinator at McNeese State University in 1990.

He never regretted the decision.

"When we got there, McNeese had been down for a number of years," Keasler said. "We wanted to turn that around, and Mike was one of the keys. He was a good recruiter, and he was excellent with kids on the field, a good teacher"

As head coach at McNeese for nine seasons, Keasler — with Santiago by his side — led the Cowboys to four Southland Conference titles and seven trips to the Division I-AA playoffs.

TT, there is talk of C.Oklahoma eventually getting in the the MIAA as a 12th member. This could open a spot for Incarnate Word in the LSC. They could get in anyway since there are 13 FB members in the LSC right now. However it would leave an odd number of 15 for B-Ball if UIW got in. What do you think?

What's wrong with the Heartland Conference? Doesn't have football, but UIW could survive as an independent as they got started up. Enough FB schools in the region.

Mike Santiago, who guided Stephen F. Austin to a Southland Conference football co-championship in 1999, is expected to be named head coach of the inaugural football team at the University of the Incarnate Word.

A news conference to introduce the coach is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at UIW's International Conference Center.

"I would love to talk about it right now," Santiago said. "I'm really in a quandary. All I can say is that I can't confirm it or deny it."

Santiago takes reins as UIW's first football coach

Barely two months after announcing the birth of a college football program, officials at the University of the Incarnate Word have given one man a chance to continue living a coach's dream.

For Mike Santiago, it's not just any dream.

"I've always wanted to coach at a Catholic institution," Santiago said Tuesday at a news conference on the UIW campus. "I've always wanted to start a program from scratch — I think a lot of coaches have."

I hope Tarleton schedules a road game against them the year they get a team. I would rather drive 20 minutes to SA to see a game than 3.5 hours to Stephenville.
