Weird. They want to compare UDM football to a Div III program. Hey guys, non-scholarship Div I schools really have no legitimate chance at a national title like Div III schools do unless they really put together an impressive winning resume OOC against quality FCS competition (ask San Diego).

This is an older article (Jan 29th), but it seems when asking the fans...they did not seem interested in non-scholarship football. They want scholarship football. We shall see. Just thought I'd open up some more football 'expansion' discussion on this board.

Anyone else got some Detroit Mercy stories to share?
-----------
Fans say no to UDM football

DETROIT -- Many faithful Detroit Mercy fans tailgate before basketball games outside Calihan Hall. The cold does not prevent them from unloading tiny grills and crock pots to make burgers and chili.

The question is: Would they tailgate before a UDM football game in the fall?

Last week, UDM's vice president for enrollment, Michael Joseph, said the school wants to bring football to campus. The Titans would play in a 4,000-seat stadium with 100 non-scholarship players in an attempt to make UDM feel more like a traditional college campus on fall weekends.

Damn, I was hoping for a Non-scholly football adding boom in the next few years. Who does that leave that is still looking to add?

Has Ralph even given us feedback from what he knows happened at that meeting that Patty V and company had a few weeks ago? I'd be interested to hear what occurred and which schools were officially in attendance for that one.

Fact of the matter is, FCS needs schools west of the Mississippi - scholarship or otherwise. There's a reason that a lot of FCS schools dropped football between 1995 and 2005 out west (thinking of Cal St Northridge and St Marys' among others) and that's one of them...

I've got nothing from ralph, all of my info was from the D-II board and links from the D-II board. Names I heard where Lipscomb, Detroit, Evansville(eventhough they claim they are not) and Harding from D-II

I went to U of Detroit for my law degree in mid-1970's. They had dropped their historic football program in 1964, as did a lot of urban Catholic universities. When you watch the movies about Knute Rockne, at the end they dedicate the movie to all the football powers in the midwest: Detroit, Chicago, Depauw, etc, in addition to Notre Dame. Gus Dorais is given some of the credit for inventing the forward pass. UD became soley a basketball school (Dick Vitale its coach while I was there), and had only 3 or 4 minor sports to keep NCAA eligibility (fencing--NCAA Champs in early '70's, baseball and Cross-Country). The undergraduate campus really lacked a sense of school spirit and something to rally around. Other than basketball season, there was nothing. I was hoping they might consider coming back with football on a smaller scale--like Villanova did in the 1980's.

no they are the same, they dropped the Mercy for awhile and now it's back but the box scores and the standings have them as Detroit.

Correct. Detroit merged with Mercy College in the early 90's I think. So while the 'official name' is now University of Detroit Mercy, a lot of people still refer to them as U of D. And their still the 'Titans'....Oh yes, don't forget Dave DeBuschere (obviously spelled wrong, but it's too late to look up;) )
