Moon Township, Pa. - In what head coach Joe Walton called a "dead heat", the Robert Morris University football team concluded its 2007 spring practice April 14 as the offense scored 14 points and the defense 14 points in a controlled scrimmage at Joe Walton Stadium. The controlled scrimmage put a cap on the club's 2007 spring practice, which lasted three and-a-half weeks.
On offense, sophomore quarterback Erik Cwalinski (Jacobsburg, Ohio / Shadyside) completed all four of his pass attempts on the afternoon for 69 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the first play from scrimmage Cwalinski dropped back and hit sophomore wide receiver Regis Flowers (Irwin, Pa. / Norwin) for an 18-yard completion, and he also connected on a 44-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Sherrod Evers (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastbaum Area).
"Sherrod was the surprise of camp, without question," Walton said. "He's going to be a good one. He can leap, has good hands, can run after the catch and, probably most important, has really gotten better at running his patterns. All around I was extremely pleased with his performance."
Sophomore Joe DeSanzo (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) came on in relief of Cwalinski and completed four of his six pass attempts for 62 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown pass to Evers. Evers finished the afternoon three catches for 56 yards and a pair of scores. Junior Ron Ball (Caroll, Ohio / Bloom Caroll) and freshman Camdin Crouse (Snow Shoe, Pa. / Bald Eagle) also saw time under center, with Ball completing two of his three pass attempts for 26 yards and Crouse finishing 1-for-6.
"Erik and Joe both had good camps," Walton said. "What I'm hoping is they're able to carry that over into summer workouts and then into training camp. Joe has really improved. He's had some injury issues in the past, but his arm really looked a lot stronger."
The backfield was led by sophomore Karey Murray (New Brighton, Pa. / New Brighton) and junior Rion Listhrop (Miami, Fla. / Felix Varela). Murray finished with eight carries for 24 yards, while Listhrop had four carries for 13 yards. Murray will enter training camp as the starter at halfback, while Listhrop will be looked upon to fill the void of former fullback Vince Magnone (2002-06). Due to the club's depth at linebacker, Robert Morris has also moved freshman Joe Recupero (Mullica HIll, N.J. / Gloucester Catholic) to fullback. He finished with 11 carries for 35 yards, including a long of 10 yards.
"Karey, Rion and Joe are all big, strong runners that will help us in short yardage situations," Walton said. "Karey can play either halfback or fullback, so he has some versatility, and I really think (Listhrop) is ready to step up and have a big year."
The Colonial defense also put a pair of touchdowns on the board in the controlled scrimmage, as sophomore linebacker Shawn Furlong (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) had a forced a fumble that he returned for a touchdown and freshman Michael Landers (Springdale, Pa. / Springdale) picked up a fumble and returned it to paydirt. Junior linebacker Chad Wengert (Kempton, Pa. / Kutztown) paced the defense with eight tackles and an interception, while junior linebacker Jordan Howard (Uniontown, Ohio / Lake) added five tackles.
"Coach Radakovich has a lot of depth at linebacker, and it's certainly going to be an area of strength next year," Walton said. "That's why we moved Recupero to fullback. Chad and Jordan each had solid camps, and Furlong and Lawrence also worked hard in camp and have gotten better."
With spring practice complete, Robert Morris heads into summer workouts before returning to campus for training camp Tuesday, August 7. The Colonials will open training camp with their first practice Wednesday, August 8.
