This umpire needs to win some kind of award, this is the best ever....

"I think that's stepping over the line."

-- Padres P David Wells, explaining that umpire Doug Eddings rubbed his belly and called him fat during an argument between the two on Wednesday

Hey Suncoast, is that 'change-up he's throwing? Three fingers on top with thumb on bottom.

yes, also called a "palm ball" because the ball sits in your palm when you grasp it

AppGuy04 is right. That looks like more of a palm ball than the circle change the most major leaguer's throw today. With a circle change, you hold the ball in your last three fingers with your thumb and index ginger forming a circle.

yeah, the cirlce changeup looks much like an "ok" symbol on the side of the ball

the "palm ball" changeup is much easier to control IMO

I agree, the palm ball change is easier to control, but the circle change, if mastered, can be the more effective pitch because it also creates movement.

By the way AppGuy04, I'm glad to see your boy Josh Hamilton knocking the cover off the ball to start the season. It is hard not to root for that guy. xthumbsupx

Yeah, its good to see. Josh was an ass in HS, but what do you expect from an 18 year old kid with a $4 million signing bonus. He seems much more humble from the interviews I've seen

Ofcourse, If you don't have movement, its like throwing BP and asking to get teed off on

For some people, the palm ball is thrown with a modified slider grip, giving the pitch a different type of movement. Jim Konstanty (for all of you suffering Phillies fans out there) and Dave Giusti (former Pirates relief ace) probably had as good a pall balls as anyone.

How fat is Doug Eddings? It would have been funnier if someone like Eric Gregg had been the one telling David Wells he was fat.
