View Full Version : Your team's dream schedule

Over on the FB group of FCS fans, there is a new discussion topic about formulating a utopian schedule for your team.

Here's mine I formulated for Harvard, which I posted as a reply to the said topic:

(Original to AGS) Rationale for the utopian schedule: Ivy League teams tend not to play tougher and also given the strict 10 consecutive game week restriction, they have difficulties scheduling teams west of the Alleghenies and south of the Potomac that are scholarship teams. This schedule I formulated respects the Presidents' restrictions but allows more leeway of scheduling tougher competition given the latter teams' longer conference game stretches.

Game 1 (week 3 or 4) - @ NDSU or @ Montana ('nuff said, I have respect for you all but the Ivies are ducking you)
Game 2 - Brown
Game 3 - @ Wofford (ditto in Game 1)
Game 4 - Cornell
Game 5 - @ Kennesaw State (one of the most successful FCS teams ever that have done much in their first 5 years in a football program)
Game 6 - Princeton
Game 7 - Dartmouth
Game 8 - Columbia
Game 9 - Penn
Game 10 - Yale (must not be moved, it's The Game for a reason)

What's your team's dream schedule? You can also include money games against FBS or FCS-FCS or FBS-FCS rivalries that haven't been played for quite some time. But of course, don't include teams who have dropped their football programs. xrulesx

My dream schedule for Portland State

Week 1---Oregon (at Providence Park)
Week 2---Oregon State (at Providence Park)
Week 3---at Northern Iowa (return the favor of playing the playoff game at Providence Park)
Week 4---at NDSU (just for the thrill of playing in a loud, indoor stadium)
Week 5---Montana (at Providence Park)
Week 6---Montana State (at Providence Park)
Week 7---UC Davis (at Providence Park)
Week 8---Idaho State (at Providence Park)
Week 9---Idaho (at Providence Park)
Week 10--at Sacramento State
Week 11--at Cal Poly
Week 12--EWU (at Providence Park)

Ducks and Beavers in Portland for big money payouts. Bobcats and Grizzlies in Portland for the same reason. No conference road games until November when we make trips to California to avoid the rain.
Added Bonus: Play all games at our home stadium downtown (and the Timbers can play in Hillsboro).

I can dream, right?

Anything other than a crappy Pioneer or NEC team.
Playing Ivy teams like Princeton would be fun as well.

In all honesty, we play pretty close to it next year (for me anyway):

Navy
UNH
Yale
Syracuse
Bucknell
Brown
Harvard
Colgate
Lehigh
Lafayette
Fordham
Georgetown

Replace Syracuse with BC and it would probably be perfect. Maybe Dartmouth instead of Brown too.

Holy Cross actually "schedules well"...usually a great mix of Ivy, CAA and FBS games...we just have to improve our actual performance on the field.

In an ideal world, CCSU wouldn't play in the NEC:

Monmouth*
New Hampshire*
Maine*
Albany*
Stony Brook*
Rhode Island*

For me, EWU in 2020/21 gets about as close as we can to a perfect schedule. Money game down at Florida. TwoFBS non-conference games against W. Illinois and N. Arizona. Our conference schedule has Idaho, Montana, Montana St. Weber , UC Davis on. All home games except for Davis. Its a potentially really tough schedule but we''ll be seeing some good football in Cheney that year.

For Dartmouth it would be something like:

I'm being realistic with my "dream" schedule. Sure, I'd prefer to get some sort of game against a bigger peer FBS name like Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Rice or Tulane. (Stanford and Notre Dame are probably too tall an order).

Interesting exercise. I'd probably think about it in terms of "who" for OOC and "when" for League play (given I'm fairly content with Colgate being in the Patriot League).

OOC
-FBS: Some combination of historic rivals (Syracuse, Rutgers), service academies, and other academic programs (selfishly I'd love a game against Rice, seeing as I live in Houston)
-Cornell, preferably in early October (just feels right)
-A second Ivy (Dartmouth/Yale/Princeton/Brown probably preferred)
-At least one CAA (W&M, UD, UNH, Nova, Albany, SB probably preferred)
-One other CAA/SoCon/NEC opponent (keeping it relatively close to home; an SLC close to Houston if I can be selfish again)

Patriot League
Lafayette
Fordham
Georgetown
Lehigh (should be in November)
Bucknell
Holy Cross as final weekend "rivalry" game (HC or Bucknell, really, but better long-time rivalry here)

This past season, that might look like:
9/1-at Rice
9/8-Delaware
9/15-at Dartmouth
9/22-at Wofford
9/29-Lafayette
10/6-Cornell
10/13-at Fordham
10/20-Georgetown
10/28-Bye
11/3-at Lehigh
11/10-at Bucknell
11/17-Holy Cross

In my dreams....The SLC would go from 9 to 8 conference games and we would use the extra game in our OOC schedule for Home-away match ups with Schools from other FCS conferences.

A regular Home-away series with in-state SWAC teams for starters, unless Prairie View could be persuaded to join the SLC.

During ACU’s transition from D2 we played Illinois State away. It would be nice to bring the Redbirds to Abilene.

We played Northern Arizona at home. A game in Flag would be great.

I’d love to see us play a game a year against a private from another conference such as Mercer, Furman, Elon Wofford, Charleston Southern, San Diego, or Georgetown.

We would limit money games to one per year, except perhaps in 12 game seasons. Two money games in an eleven game season hurts our chances of going to the playoffs.

11 game season

8 conference games

vs Drake (I want them on a 2/1/1 rotation. So over 4 years twice in CF, once in DSM and one year off. Their off year replace them with Valpo, or another generic NEC, PFL, etc buy game?

Buy game vs a lower to mid end "power conference" team. Say UNC, Idaho State, EIU, etc.

@ Iowa State. Sure see season still playing and FBS? In state. Winnable power 5 game. Pays very well. In theory these games pay for the other home games, at a minimum

In a 12 game season a road game vs a decent opponent isn't a horrible idead, maybe as the front end of a h/h, or another cheaper buy game.

Pretty similar to what I'd want: 3 OOC games
- one home against a midwestern Pioneer League team (Valpo, Butler, Drake, maybe Dayton)
- one at a fairly local FBS...ideally one we have a chance at actually beating every now and then (Illinois, Northwestern, Ball State, Northern Illinois, etc.) but I'm ok getting beat down by a big FBS every now and then (Iowa, Wisconsin, Mizzou, etc.)
- one that is either part of a H&H against a full-scholarship FCS team...EIU, SEMO, Murray State...or another home game against maybe a SWAC team.

We're not really in a position to be buying many home games at this point though...hence all the H&H's on our actual schedule.

Harvard's further utopian schedule (if the Presidents have a more relaxed stance towards football and from your inputs throughout the thread):

My assumptions:
- Long-gone OOCs are resumed (especially in-state)
- Maximum 12 games allowed with byes
- FCS playoffs participation allowed by the Ivy champion

Week 1 (true week 1) - @UMass
Week 2 - @BC

Why would you want to start the season 0-4

The goal of the thread was to put out your dream schedule not a schedule to win the most games. I would rather take a couple bumps playing quality competition and other FCS teams that are challenging for playoff berths. Some years will that mean 0-4? Sure and it probably means we don't have that great of a team anyway that year. But if we want to be a relevant team and a playoff contender we go 2-2 or 3-1.

i just don't have any interest in D-2 games or games with Pioneer or NEC level teams.

Maine has played seven teams more than 50 times: Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The only two playing FCS football are New Hampshire and Rhode Island. That's two.

Teams Maine has played between 30 and 50 times: Boston University, Delaware, Northeastern, and Vermont. The only one still playing FCS football is Delaware. That's three.

20-30 times?: Richmond and Villanova. Five.

10+?: Albany, Harvard, Hofstra, James Madison, Towson, Tufts, and William & Mary. That's ten, if we want to count Harvard who hasn't deigned to play Maine since 1920.

And throw in Stony Brook since they are an all sports conference rival.

That 11 is good enough, also we will decline any playoff invitation.

OOC - Top 50 FBS (preferrably a bus ride $$$), Top 25 FCS, Patsy FCS .. our problem with Top 25 FCS is we have our h&h rivalry game with EIU and they are no longer top 25 program. I liked this game better when EIU was tougher.

Conf - play EVERY team in MVFC once, but that ship has sailed

Bye week - love having 1 bye week, somewhere around weeks 4 to 8 .. but we always seem to get stuck around weeks 1 to3.

Biggest scheduling Pet Peeve .. I hate how ISUr senior day game almost always falls on the saturday before thanksgiving when students are gone for thanksgiving break .. this happens at least 80% of the time for ISUr ... it is a dis-service to the Seniors.

For JMU, a reasonably realistic schedule and not a complete pipe dream:

Week 1: home vs Old Dominion University (It really sucks that in their short stint in FCS, we never beat them. I'd love to stomp their asses at home)
Week 2: away at Towson
Week 3: away at Appalachian State University (Former FCS rival of sorts, the most recent poster child for successful FCS to FBS transition)
Week 4: home vs Harvard (I have slight Ivy League envy but also I'd love to play a solid ooc game against a team we've never played instead of a Norfolk State)
Week 4: home vs New Hampshire
Week 5: away at Villanova
Week 6: away at William and Mary
Week 7: home (parents weekend) vs Maine
Week 8: vs Rhode Island
Week 9 home (homecoming) vs Richmond (various expletives about sweater-vests and arachnids)
Week 10: home vs Delaware
Week 11: at University of Virginia (they haven't played us since the early/mid 80's, before I was born, so I want a piece of them. Sidenote, I got my master's from UVa but this is a easy decision to root for JMU)
Week 12: at Albany

FCS playoffs:

First Round Bye
Second Round home vs Sam Houston State (it's almost too easy to hate SHSU)
Quarterfinals home vs Montana (still bitter about 2008)
Semifinals: home vs Richmond (I want to beat them as many times in a season as possible)
Finals vs: NDSU (may as well beat the best?)

Other acceptable ooc fcs games: most Ivy league teams, top tier MVFC teams, top tier Big Sky teams, Charleston Southern (I love the city of Charleston)
Other acceptable ooc fbs games: Any mid-Atlantic ACC team, Navy, Army, most AAC teams (especially East Carolina), Kentucky, Vanderbilt, WVU, Maryland, Rutgers, Georgia Southern.

@ VMI - A great place to start the year off with a win
William & Mary - A better team from Virginia with plenty of academic prowess
@ Rutgers - A legit chance to beat an old rival who happens to be in the Big 10.
@ Youngstown State - Great recruiting area and a chance for a MVFC scalp
Fordham - A fun PL team from the Bronx
@ Montana State - Great cross country trip. Weather would still be nice in Bozeman.
Bucknell - Return back home to beat up on an old foe
Colgate - Lehigh's second biggest rival over the last 20 years
@ ETSU - "Tennessee, Tennessee, ain't no place I rather be". Beautiful area!
Delaware - A rivalry that should be renewed!
Lafayette - The annual slaughtering of the Leopards is a tradition unlike any other....

For Albany, assuming we're still in the CAA, for OOC I'd like
1 - FBS, Army > Boston College > Navy > Maryland >Syracuse
2 - Central Connecticut, or LIU once they get up to speed
3. - One of the Ivies that we haven't played yet - that's H, P, P or D

Even if leagues disappeared, I'd still go for most of the closer CAA teams - Maine, UNH, Stony Brook, Delaware, Villanova - and add Colgate or Cornell, one of the lesser regional FBS like UConn, UMass or Buffalo, and then finally any of the Virginia CAA teams.

For Lafayette a "dream schedule" would be 11 games against D-3 competition, given the current state of the athletic toilet in Easton. But, wait, that's not a dream. It's a preview because that's where this is headed.

That would fit my definition of an ideal regular season: beat Lafayette, go undefeated, Lafayette winless.
