Lulay leads the way

April 14, 2007
NFL Europa

Berlin Thunder 15, Rhein Fire 3
LTU arena, Düsseldorf, Germany

Seattle Seahawks-allocated quarterback Travis Lulay turned in a game-winning performance with his arm and legs as the Berlin Thunder opened the NFL Europa season with a victory for the fourth year in a row.

Lulay completed 22 of 32 passes for 189 yards and put the game out of Rhein's reach with a spectacular 61-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. He ended the day with 72 rushing yards on six carries.

The Montana State product outshone former San Francisco 49ers starter Cody Pickett, who completed eight of 16 passes for 57 yards and one interception on his Rhein Fire debut.

Berlin had a chance to take an early lead as wide receiver Ryan Hoag (Washington Redskins) blocked Danny Baugher's first punt of the contest, allowing the Thunder to take over deep in Rhein territory.

Travis Lulay broke Fire hearts with a 61-yard touchdown run in the fourth period. (City-Press)
But the opportunity was wasted when Lulay fumbled and Fire linebacker Blake Costanzo (New York Jets) recovered at his own 10-yard line.

The Fire opened the scoring midway through the second quarter as Pittsburgh Steelers-allocated kicker Connor Hughes landed a 21-yard field goal. The score was set up by a 30-yard completion from Brett Elliott (San Diego Chargers) to wide receiver P.K. Sam (Miami Dolphins).

Berlin got moving late in the first half as Lulay connected three times with second-year wide receiver Rich Musinksi for a total of 28 yards. He also fired a 12-yard completion to Mexican wideout Alejandro Gamez, setting up a 53-yard field goal by Andrew Jacas with five seconds left in the half.

The kick - worth four points under NFL Europa rules - gave the Thunder a one-point lead heading into the break.

Jacas displayed his strong leg again midway through the third period as he landed a 50-yard field goal to give Berlin an 8-3 lead. The key plays on the scoring drive were Lulay completions of 12 yards to running back Damien Rhodes and 15 yards to wide receiver Carlton Brewster (Green Bay Packers).

Rhein had the opportunity to move in front on the opening play of the fourth quarter but Pickett's pass intended for running back Taurean Henderson (Atlanta Falcons) was intercepted by linebacker Jameel Dumas at Berlin's four-yard line.

The Thunder put the contest beyond the Fire's reach with just over four minutes remaining as Lulay scampered around right end for his long scoring run that silenced the crowd at LTU arena.

That's not low. Pro rating is different from college. 84 is good....100 is exceptional, usually leads the NFL.

Appreciated the info. FYI, it's UC Davis, NEVER Cal-Davis. If you want to irritate Aggie fans, the only way to get under their skin quicker would be to say something nice about Sacramento State.

What's with the 4 point FG???

I don't know the magic number (40, 45, 50?), but the way I understand it FG's over a certain yardage are awarded 4 pts. in NFLE.

The two Thunder FG's Sat. were 53 & 50.

FG of 50+ yards are worth 4 points

Changed to NFL Europa this offseason to give it more of a continnental feel as thats where it's based
