Hey guys,
I lived in South Dakota for a little but was born in Pittsburgh (currently in the suburbs) and my Father is from here, and always wondered why/how people in states with no pro sports teams picked/were given the teams they rooted for. Also, with all the user bars I am confused as to why someone could be a Cards fan in baseball, but a Chargers fan in football???? So, what I would like to know is simple.

- Where were you born? (Do not care about anything else but place of birth)
- Favorite NFL team? Why if not a home team?
- Favorite MLB team? Why if not a home team?
- Favorite NHL team? Why if not a home team?
- Favorite NBA team? Why if not a home team?

If there is one thing I hate, it is a fair weather/bandwagon fans. I am 26 and anytime I meet someone my age and their favorite teams are Green Bay, Braves, etc..., it ticks me off and I probe to find the answer. Be loyal.

You fit the profile to a T.

a question for you, you say your fav is the Green Bay Packers.... (but) used to like... Bengals/Eagles. I do not understand. How do you switch allegiances? And as far as that goes, why do you like FCS so much? I am a DIII undergrad... did you go to FCS grad program? (sorry if you posted your reason for posting here in a earlier post)

- Where were you born? Michigan
- Favorite NFL team? Bears
- Favorite MLB team? Cubs/Sox
- Favorite NHL team? Red Wings
- Favorite NBA team? Bulls

Used to be Lions, Tigers, Pistons but the media here in Chicago is relentless and the teams won me over. Still a place in my heart for them and the Red Wings will always be my NHL team. I go to maybe two/three pro events a year (as opposed to 14-20 FCS games each Fall).

I liked the Bengals along with 3 of my cousins plus I hated the 49'ers and they played them in 2 super bowls. Eagles I just really like Reggie White and Randall Cunningham a lot. The Switch My Uncle was a Packer fan and they were always a top 3 team for me, he finally turned me. My family all from Reedley (Me Packers, Bro's: Titans, Jets, Cousins: 3 Bengals, Bills, Bears, 49'ers, Uncles: Packers, Bengals

I love to follow FCS and D-II, it all started when I wanted to know every colleges division conference nickname (I have a notebook with all NAIA, D-I,D-II,D-III, NCCAA, USCAA schools conferences and nicknames)

No FCS grad school, my Wife graduated from UC Santa Cruz (D-III)

- Where were you born? Missoula, MT
- Favorite NFL team? Green Bay - have an Aunt & Uncle that live there, my uncle has season tix, been to two games at Lambeau. Been on the waiting list with my dad for tickets for about 20 years now (back when they really stunk).
- Favorite MLB team? St. Louis - have an aunt & uncle that live their also. Saw my first MLB games there (1990ish), been a fan since.
- Favorite NHL team? Couldn't care less, but I do enjoy watching hockey live and the playoffs.
- Favorite NBA team? None.

I'm also 26, but definitely not a bandwagoner.

Where were you born? Rock Hill, SC

- Favorite NFL team? Jacksonville Jaguars (The city was colonized by South Carolinians and Georgians + it's a southern coastal city + I like the colors ;) )

- Favorite MLB team? Braves: If you live in the Deep South, THIS is your home team.

- Favorite NHL team? Thrashers

- Favorite NBA team? Used to be the Hornets. Now it's the Hawks :( I can't pull for the bobcats because the owner didn't deserve to get the Charlotte franchise. Larry Bird worked his ass off to get a team there but his color was the only thing holding him back with the NBA. Actually I don't care about the NBA anymore and hope it goes belly up.

Favorite NFL team? Cowboys
- Favorite MLB team? Angels
- Favorite NHL team? Kings
- Favorite NBA team? Lakers

Lived north of LA (oxnard) until I was six, so most of my favorite sports team are from the LA area, but when the football teams moved I was pissed off, so I picked the best team at the time (cowboys) and stuck with them.

Born in San Luis Obispo, CA. (200 miles north of LA)
MLB Dodgers 1st
Angels 2nd
NFL Chargers (used to be the LA Chargers)
NBA Lakers
NHL Mighty Ducks

I became a Brooklyn Dodgers fan in 1953. They were in the series almost every year against the Yankees and 1953 was the first TV series in San Luis Obispo. I was 11 years old. When they moved to LA it was great. I was a Rams fan until Georgia moved them to St Louis.

- Favortie NFL team, the Green Bay Packers, I hate our schedule this year though, and it's not gonna be very pretty.

- Favorite MLB team? The Milwaukee Brewers, they got potential this year, the pieces are in place.

- Favorite NHL team? I'd say Toronto. Why them? Well, Wisconsin doesn't have an NHL team, but we have an AHL team.

- My favorite NBA team is again another Wisconsin team, the Milwaukee Bucks ( xlolx ), hope they win the lottery again and get Durant.

It is strange that an area so rich for baseball (the southeast) has one major team. It is ingrained though. Jeff Francoeur (Braves rightfielder and Georgia native) would only sign with Atlanta. He took far less money to play for the Braves than he would have gotten if he signed with Tampa that year. The Braves love to draft players from Georgia, many of whom wish to only play for Atlanta.

oh, yeah
born: southwest GA

MLB: Braves

NFL: Falcons (stressful at best)

NHL: Maple Leafs (I visted Toronto when I was young and got a Leaf's jersey. The Thrashers are good, and if I watched more hockey I'd probably buy into them)

NBA: Hawks (not a huge NBA fan)

Truth be told, Geogia, and much of the southeast, follows college athletics far more heavily than professional sports. The Braves are the only pro team in that I know of down here that get the attention. The Georgia Bulldogs outdraw the Falcons by about 20-30k a game. :)

Okay, here's my teams that are one of the stranger sets, but I'll explain as I go along:

Born: Mt. Kisco, NY (20 miles from NYC)

MLB team: Red Sox (Father, a New England native basically ingrained a hate for the Yankees and to be a fan) Also Braves and Cubs (moved to SC in early 80's, those two were on every day, and they grew on me, especially the announcers).

NFL team: Chiefs (Hated every Sunday with the HORRIBLE Jets and Giants teams on every Sunday as only two games we got in the 70's, then my Dad worked with the Browns from 78-87 and Chiefs 88-96. Art Modell ruined a lot of Cleveland memories, but my Dad always respected*Lamar Hunt, and it was an incredible place to see a game). Also, Green Bay loved our visit there, and their backup QB is a Furman guy, also their 1970's QB, David Whitehurst was also a Furman alum).

NBA team: Celtics (See Red Sox above, but they're pushing my limits right now with the tanking of games and Danny Ainge's GM skills). Also: Spurs (Two of all-time favorite athletes both on and off the court have been The Admiral and Tim Duncan, besides have to root for one good team).

NHL team: Went to Islanders games from expansion season through the first two Stanley Cups, still root for them, though harder now. Also, living in Raleigh, do have a liking for the Hurricanes.

Also, an exception is I'll root for anybody who has a former Paladin, NC State football player (Dad worked their since '96, but in the future that will stop, because of the unjust firing), and Duke basketball player (parents have season tickets there). Well, maybe the player, not necessarily the team.

How's that for an iconic list?

I completely agree that ga is much more of a college town but currently the falcons have a waiting list for season tix and they are in a dome so they cant expand so it's sort of hard to say uga gets 20-30 more... sure they do but the falcons would sell more tix if they could xtwocentsx

- Favorite MLB team? Why if not a home team? Chicago Cubs
- Favorite NHL team? Why if not a home team? Pittsburgh Penguins
- Favorite NBA team? Why if not a home team? New Orleans Hornets

Yeah, I know, liking the Saints and Cubs is pretty much torture in any given year (last year was a big exception).
The Penguins were really the first NHL team I ever watched on TV and I continued to follow them for years after that.
I don't really follow the NBA too much except for the Hornets. But you HAVE to pull for the hometown team, right?!

Also, I have a favorite AL team in baseball...the Baltimore Orioles. Followed them ever since Cal Ripken Jr played. He's my favortie player of all time. So, add them with the Saints and Cubs, I've suffered almost as much as any sports fan in the history of sports! :D

Favorite NHL team? Don't really watch hockey, but if I do, I go for the Dallas Stars
Favorite NBA team? Dallas Mavericks (when I was about 9, I got to meet Jason Kidd at a Mavs game at Reunion Arena, so I have stuck with them)

I guess you can say I'm a homer for the DFW teams. I follow the Rangers more than any of the others though. I love baseball.

I was born in Louisville, KY.

NFL-Buffalo Bills

-I latched on to the team during that run of four straight Superbowls...when I was about 7-10 years old...and never let go. Jim Kelly is my all-time favorite NFL player.

MLB-Chicago Cubs

-At one time my childhood obsession with Michael Jordan caused me to love all things Chicago. This is really the only holdover from that period. Why not the Sox? I used to like them, and I even still have a have a hat somewhere, but something about the identity of being a "Cubs Fan" appealed to me, and I have been one for quite a while now.

NBA-San Antonio Spurs

-In my post Jordan disgust with the Bulls franchise I started to root for David Robinson...one of my all time favorite players and a terrific guy as well. This carried over to the Duncan era, and thus I'm now a Spurs fan.

Additionally, I don't like either the Hornets or Grizzlies very much for the fact that BOTH of them left Louisville as their #2 choice when they relocated. I don't know how closely everyone followed it, but in the weeks before it happened it was practically ASSUMED locally that the Grizzlies would be coming to Louisville and playing under the ABA throwback name "Kentucky Colonels."

NHL-New York Rangers

-I don't really care about hockey, but I have an uncle that lives in NYC, and there have been a lot of great players to pass through MSG. But again, hockey really doesn't register on my sports radar.

NFL-New England: Everytime I say this, I get accused of being a bandwagon fan. I guess fact is I am, but I jumped on it over 20 years ago. When I was a kid, the first year I closely followed the NFL was 1985. They were on TV alot that year and made it to the Super Bowl. I loved Tony Eason, Irving Fryar, and Andre Tippet. They were a big underdog that year and fun to watch. I believe they were the first Wild-card team to make it to the Superbowl xconfusedx .

MLB-Twins: "Local" team. Grew up getting to see them win 2 World Series and watch Kirby Puckett

NHL-Winnipeg Jets xbawlingx : "Local" team

NBA-The NBA has sucked for at least 10 years now

I just never really latched onto them, I have nothing against them. They do have kind of a lame name, though. I liked the North Stars when they were there.

But I freely admit to being plain anti-Minnesota college hockey! xnodx

NHL: Carolina Hurricanes- hometown team, been to a bunch of games

-NFL: Carolina Panthers (obviously regional)
-MLB: Atlanta Braves (regional, you'll find a lot of NC'ers root for them)
-NHL: Carolina Hurricanes (again, regional. I didn't follow hockey before they came to Raleigh, but then again, I'm fairly young)
-NBA: Phoenix Suns (here's the strange one. When the Hornets were in Charlotte, I was not really interested in them. MLB: Seattle Mariners. I've always been a Mariners fan.

NBA: Dallas Mavericks. I'm a huge Jason Kidd fan. So, when they had the Three J's (Jamal Mashburn, Jimmy Jackson, Jason Kidd), I was a huge Mavs fan. It was tough through the 90's, but I stuck with them and now they're looking pretty good.

- Where were you born? Hickory, NC, about an hour NW of Charlotte
- Favorite NFL team? Carolina Panthers
- Favorite MLB team? Washington Nationals (in principle) Baltimore Orioles (by precedent)
- Favorite NHL team? Carolina Hurricanes, though I'm not much of a hockey fan
- Favorite NBA team? In theory, I'm a Charlotte Bobcats fan. In practice, I really don't care for the NBA (or indoor sports in general).

I grew up with a deep resentment towards the baseball team that shares a city with the Hawks (ugh) and Falcons (double-ugh), and general confusion as to why North Carolinians should be expected to cheer for said baseball team, particularly when nearly everybody east of Greensboro is closer to Baltimore than Atlanta. The resentment continues to the present day, to the point that I live a few blocks from the home of the Richmond Braves and can't stand to go watch them play. But I'll go to almost a dozen Nats/O's games a year.

- Where were you born? Connecticut (Do not care about anything else but place of birth)
- Favorite NFL team? Raiders Why if not a home team?
- Favorite MLB team? Mets Why if not a home team?
- Favorite NHL team? Islanders Why if not a home team?
- Favorite NBA team? Celtics Why if not a home team?

Raiders are the only team not really a "home" team in CT since you are between NY and Boston. Before the AFL came into existence the Giants would have been the home team but I could not root for ANY team playing in Yankee Stadium.
