View Full Version : NCAA Recognizes Timing Mistake

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet (I didn't see anything that mentioned it), but the NCAA reverted back to the old timing rules that were in effect prior to the 2006 season where the clock will start on kickoffs once the receiving team touches the ball (instead of when the ball is kicked) and the clock will not start on possession changes until the ball is snapped as opposed to the "ready" whistle.
My question to you is what do you think of the change back?

Nah, you need to give the bands their fair share of time on the field. What about in between the 1st and 2nd quarters?
Honestly though, I don't know WHAT the rules committee was thinking last year when they actually thought it would be a good idea. The rule eliminated one of the most exciting parts of college football: the 2-minute drill. I think that many teams - FBS, FCS or otherwise - would have had different outcomes to their seasons had the rule not been changed. xtwocentsx

College football games should be a 3 hour event.
I felt short-changed at a few games last year. xbawlingx

Hell yea I voted yes. I knew it was being discussed, but didn't know the final outcome. Do you have a quick link to the NCAA decision?
Thanks.

I'll say. the Lehigh-Georgetown game was played in about 2 1/2 hours. Love going back to the prior rules.

Well this was silly. I guess they just couldn't find a compromise between the two extremes and just scrapped the whole thing. So now we're back to loooong games. Psh.

The shorter the games, the more you can watch in one day.
And also I guess they just seem longer when you hardly ever win.

Great to see the NCAA realized the error of their ways - of course, it would've been easier had they just realized that the same time everyone else did, which was about a few seconds right after they made the new rules last year. Seriously, this was a no-brainer that the rules were bad. How they got all the way through the process without that being noticed is a bit distrubing. But hey, at least it's fixed now! :)

Good article from Kolpack on how the Bison feel about it:
http://www.in-forum.com/Sports/articles/162550
I remember this well:
"NDSU took advantage of the old kickoff rule last year at California Davis. After scoring a touchdown with 4 seconds left to take a 28-24 lead, Bison players intentionally went offsides on the ensuing kickoff by at least 10 yards.
It was a 5-yard penalty, but it also ate up the remaining time. NDSU then squibbed a harmless grounder that Davis had no chance of returning.
The Bison coaches got the idea earlier that day when they watched the University of Wisconsin do the same thing on television."

Thank you! This rule was stupid...
..however, I understand the logic of starting the clock when the ball is kicked, and somewhat agree with it.... if the ball is kicked, there is action occuring on the field... therefore clock it..
The change of possesion thing and play-clock rule was just horrible...

Where's the excitement in THAT!!! Plus, you have all these idiots taking dives on the field when it's OBVIOUS they didn't get hurt. Especially when they jump right back on the field 5 minutes later and are running at full-speed! xmadx

The rule change was really stupid. It didn't seem like there was much thought put into how this could impact close games. At least they admitted they made a mistake and reversed it. I do like the new rule about reducing the play clock on TV timeouts from 25 to 15 seconds. The TV timeouts are long enough. I think coaches can get their plays called in that amount of time, except our offense, last year. xoopsx xnonono2x xmadx
