The inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football is now on. Discuss anything about the new outdoor league here... xcoffeex

Read in the paper today that one of their experimental rules is doing away with all kick offs. Teams start at the 25. However, if after a TD a team wants to go for an "onsides kick", now they will run a play from their own 28 yard line, and it will be effectively "4th down and 12". If they make the first down, they got the ball where downed. If defense holds, they get the ball.

That's a solid twist. That's a solid replacement IMO. I'll be eager to see how it works out.
Is punting remaining unchanged?

Watched a little of the SD at SA game Saturday night. Wasn't the greatest game but kind of liked some of the new ideas they are trying out. The Sky judge was interesting to see how they go thru the review process. Hopefully the games get a little better as they play more.

I watched San Antonio-San Diego Saturday night and Arizona-Salt Lake City last night. Overall, I thought it was a decent product with a lot of familiar names. IMO, football desperately needs a legit feeder/development league outside of college. I actually hope it gains traction.

The one problem I see is the QB position. Let's face it there are not 32 quality QB's for all the NFL teams so the QB play was really pretty bad IMO. I wonder if there would be some way to get some NFL backups into this league. I suppose the risk wouldn't be worth the rewards but if a guy like Philly's Sudfeld played in this league and showed well he might increase his chances of getting a shot to start somewhere in the NFL. Plus Philly could use that to increase his trade value too.

Atlanta's punter may be listed as a Georgia Alum, but he was Wofford's kicker for 3 years.
And I like the league. Don't expect it to be a competitor to the NFL, but a complement. It's basically the minor league. Low stakes, sporadic quality, so-so talent, but entertaining enough to open a cold one on a Saturday afternoon in Spring. Some of the games were not good, but these teams have been together for like a month.
Currently, I'm showing preference for teams based on jerseys and success. Spurrier made me interested in the Apollos (a dumb name), but I like the uniforms for the Birmingham Iron and San Antonio Commanders.
I will be watching these games, whenever I can.

Marvin did the Grad Transfer thing to UGA in 2017 for his final year. He kicked off twice there & was perfect on FG’s...1 for 1, a 19 yarder to close out the scoring in a 41-0 UGa win late in the 4th quarter @ Tennessee.
In an interesting twist, the Punter on the Legends’ Roster is listed as being from Columbia U., but he ‘split time’ as the Punter there. So, he also did the Grad Transfer thing to Georgia, also in 2017...and he was the Dawgs starting Punter with 61 punts for a nice 45.0 yard average.

Getting true backups in the league would help. Assuming most teams have at least two under contract, that 64 or so the AAFL can’t touch. Probably more if you include the taxi squad guys.

Honestly, I don't like the television model. I mentioned the league this weekend a and my kids wanted to check out a game. Paying for Netflix, Hulu and a Comcast subscription at the beach, the best we could have done is drive to my Mom's house to watch the game. So, instead of the AAF capturing the up and coming generation of fans, we found something else to do.

Their end game was to be the minor league equivalent for the NFL. There was no way they would be solvent without that. Because the NFLPA is playing hardball that can't come into fruition.
Between competing with playoff NBA, March Madness and the opening week of MLB, there was no way this business model was going to work by revenue from ticket sales and marketing by itself. They need/needed heavy subsidy from the NFL, which they were kind of getting from owners like Jerry Jones (they moved their championship game from Las Vegas to a nice Cowboys indoor arena that sits about 20k, I think). But the NFLPA isn't budging yet.
Bisonator
March 28th, 2019, 03:03 PM
I don't understand what the NFLPA has to do with not being able to fund your organization. They have players to field teams. They should have had the finances in place to complete a full season at least before even starting this thing. Somebody didn't think this all the way thru or put the cart in front of the horse. Apparently Bill Polian found out he needed more NFL backing then he got.

Exactly. It's a high risk for players to participate. Management loves it and would subsidize it if it developed players (see: Jerry Jones). But the NFLPA isn't about that right now.

imagine that, the NFLPA looking out for the interest of the players instead of the owners/management.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, just that's how it is.
AAF would be really good for quarterback development, but not for many other positions.

Never saw a game. The few times I went looking to watch, it wasn't available without some sort of special paid subscription beyond what I normally pay. Oh well. Never invest in the minor leagues. Even when they survive, they don't make money.

No word yet if they get invited to the White House.

Apparently the long game was to get the AAF to slide in when the NFL renegotiated the CBA in 2020 but some of the league owners wanted to do it sooner (which would weaken their negotiating position) and that disagreement is what dissolved the league.
