In the end, the only difference-making starter on the market was Burnett. Teams scrambled to get him. The Phils, according to sources, offered Vicente Padilla, Kenny Lofton and Urbina for Burnett and centerfielder Juan Pierre.


That slop for Josh Beckett and Juan Pierre??? Wade must think that the Florida GM is an idiot... the Indians got a better deal when they sold Manhattan...

Colon and a minor league pitcher.

Colon had filled in nicely as a starter role in an emergency, but hasn't performed so well from the bullpen. I believe he's 25, and has shown some decent potetnial. The fact was that the Braves had too much starting/middle relief pitching already, and needed somebody for the late innings. Colon was already pushed out of the rotation, and would only be pushed back farther when Hampton and Thompson came back.

I personally think he's reached his full potential, and will never really amount to much as a starting pitcher in Detroit. The Braves got a much needed late-inning reliever for an unneeded player that wasn't going to be a staple in the organization in the process...
