Snitker's move today was reminiscent of Bobby Cox pulling Andruw Jones for not hustling on a fly ball.
I don't really have an opinion on it. Snitker has been in baseball for 40+ years. He's a player's manager. If he pulled his best player in a critical game, I'm sure he had a good reason to do it.

Freakin' Phillies driving me nuts! Sweep the Cubs in monster fashion, take the opener over Padres, then lay two eggs in a row. I cannot see them making the playoffs with this kind of ying/yang play. Got decent pitching today, but only two runs.

Agreed Hoskins a concern. Seems to be trying to yank everything to left. Although hit a monster "out" to deep center yesterday. Maybe a good sign. Can't understand Kapler putting him at leadoff. Nuts. Should be down around 6 right now until he can work out of slump.

Braves make an "all in" move and pick up Billy Hamilton off waivers from KC.
Hamilton apparently won't get ABs, but will be a late-game defensive replacement and speedy pinch runner.

Speed a great asset. Phillies Roman Quinn is a real burner and when in the line up can create havoc on the base paths as well as cover a lot of ground in the OF. Was just on a nice hot streak when he pulled his groin. The guy has had one injury after another over the past three years and just can't seem to stay healthy over a long haul.

It can be. On a playoff roster, though, those guys can be invaluable.

How about the Red Sox running themselves out of the game in the 9th inning last night. Bogarts on second after a double, no out. Next batter hits grounder to SS and Bogarts takes off for 3B right in front of Segura! Thrown out at 3B. Next batter hits liner to 2B and the baserunner at first gets doubled off! Game over. For once the Phillies didn't look like idiots!

I like where Atlanta is right now. They've weathered injuries to Riley, Inciarte, Markakis, Swanson, and now McCann while still maintaining a division lead that has never really shrunk despite a hard charge from Washington and New York. Riley and Swanson are heading to rehab stints, as is Darren O'Day, who has yet to pitch for the Braves (though, if healthy, has been a very good relief pitcher).
Pickups like Hechavarria and Hamilton look like great "win now" moves to shore up the bench, defense, and base runner for late innings. The bullpen additions finally start looking like they have it together. Starting pitching continues to be strong as well.
Atlanta is now in a spot where these players can come back on rehab stints, rosters expand in September, and they can carry a roster full of quality major leaguers with varying useful skill sets through the stretch run.

Agreed. Ridiculous. I am reading a book, now, called The Baseball Codes. I highly recommend for anyone "into" all of the "unwritten rules of the game". Numerous chapters on when and not 'drilling' an opponent is accepted, retaliation, stealing signs, doctoring the ball, etc.

Braves gut out a 14 inning win against Degrom in NY. Interestingly, NY's only run was a Degrom homer in the 6th. Flotynewicz looked great.
Ronald Acuna swiped second to join the 30-30 club. He's the first Brave to do so since 1991 (Ron Gant)

At the end of the year, if the Phillies miss out on the post season, they may need to look no further than their play against the Marlins. The Fish haven't been consistently competitive against any team but the Phillies.

I give the guy a lot of credit for taking that leave for the birth of he and his wife's child. Who the hell wouldn't? Being there with my wife when both our kids were born were the top experiences in my life. Credit the players' union for getting that into their contract. As for being a primadonna--I've very few other athletes in any sport hustle more than Harper. He may be exciteable, and certainly is not the perfect hitter, but he has been quite productive this year and a better defensive player than many expected. If this team had more guys busting tail like Harper they'd in the hunt for the division. Instead, management forgot about the pitching component needed in this game. If the Phils don't right this meandering ship over the next five weeks, I expect the GM and Manager gone.

Phillies continue to tease with a walk off HR win last night, after Neris blew the save in the 9th inning. Vargas did a decent job and is now their second best starter. Unbelieveable how bad they have played the past month, that they are only one game out of the wild card. Says alot about the mediocrity out there. Talent is spread thin under the system they play now.

Ironic that the Phils are 9-5 over past two weeks, but it doesn't feel that way with some of the horrendous ways they have lost. Braves sweep White Sox. Magic No. is 21.
What's strange is the Braves haven't been able to shake loose the Nationals. The lead has been 5 or 6 games for probably two months. That's far enough to be comfortable, but close enough to be a little uncomfortable going into the home stretch.
The Nats are comfortably in control of the first wild card spot.

Atlanta's magic number for the division is 19. They finish up with the Blue Jays tonight and then start a 4 game series with Washington over the weekend. With 7 games against the Nats over the next week and a half, the division race will either be put on ice or get uncomfortably close.

The Mets blew a 6 run lead last night in Washington. Atlanta has won six straight and has been on a tear, but they cannot get Washington off their tail. It really is a testament to both teams, frankly. The Nationals must be frustrated because they've been the hottest team in baseball the last two months and haven't gained a single game on the Braves.
With 22 to play, I think the only team that can seriously threaten Atlanta for the NL East crown is Washington. A strong week and it's over.
The Phillies are still 2.5 out of the wild card. They are to the point where they really cannot afford to lose.

Well, we can lose a 'few', but it will be uphill. Cubs opposition the remaining 25 or so games is sub .500 and the Phillies' maybe the highest winning percentage. Moreover, Phils are on the road for 2/3 of their remaining games. But, they've gotten off to a nice start to September and look to a third in a row at the Reds tonight behind Nola. Then it's on the Citi Field where they can bury the Mutts for good before returning to for a four game set with the Braves, likely with Nola beginning things on 9/9. Amazing stretch as they have FIVE straight games in Washington from 9/23-26 including a DH on 9/24!!xholyx

He seemed like a logical candidate given his roots in the area and connection to the Braves' GM. He wasn't great early, but has turned it on the second half. It will be interesting to see if the Braves try to resign him.

Will the Phillies cut it out!!?? Five HRs last night to pull back within two games of second WC. The strip tease continues. Actually felt sorry for Acuna last night (very briefly) as he flipped the ball out of his glove after stealing an over the fence dinger from Kingery, who then circles the bases for his first inside-the-parker!
It looked like a catch but Acuna didn’t do Himself any favors playing umpire while Kingery was circling the bases

I feel like Davey Martinez lost his team last night. Culberson takes a fastball square in the face, he ends up appealing to determine whether Culberson offered at the pitch (not sure how one offers at a pitch thrown at his face).
Fernando Rodney was clearly shaken. He admitted after the game he didn't want to continue. The Braves broke open a 1-1 game into a blowout against Rodney, who clearly didn't want to be out there. At no point did Washington even have a guy start tossing in the bullpen.
What sort of leadership is that?

It's been primarily a starting pitching problem. The bullpen was a MASH unit to begin the season, but somewhat righted itself by midway point. However, starting pitching has been horrid throughout, with exception of Nola, who himself has struggled of late. Management shored up the offense, but ignored the starting pitching passing on Corbin, Keuchel and others "hoping" their young guns of Velazquez, Pivetta, Eickhoff, and Eflin were all going to bloom. Other than an occasional 'quality start' no one stepped up. Of the four, only Eflin showed some sign of a future as a starter. Phils have one nice stud in AA who may join next year, but front office MUST go big in off season for some quality free agents or a deal. At the moment, they are one win short of last year's 80-82, with 7 to play.

But isn't that just a self-perpetuating problem? The roster isn't good, so spend more money?
I look at it this way - talent-wise, the Phillies are lagging behind Atlanta and New York. Atlanta has more elite talent on their MLB roster and a deeper farm system. They are built for a long run. Which players exactly will Philly pick up this offseason that will close that gap? They aren't just one or two players away from contending for a title.

It will depend on what occurs on 9/30...Is McPhail, Klentak, and/or Kapler retained? Phils need to go after the Astros free-agent pitcher (senioritis at the moment) and Rendon of the Nats. 3B a big problem this hear. Franco has been an ongoing project and time to move on. Keuchel hinted in an interview the Phillies were never really involved with him.
The significance of not really pursuing Keuchel suggests, to me, that the Phillies' resources aren't infinite. What other reason would there be not to pursue an available starting pitcher who eventually lands with a rival?
If the Phillies resources are not infinite, the odds of landing multiple top free agents seems unlikely. Even if they did, is Rendon going to cover 17 games in the standings next year?

Certainly not. However, his is worth a few and with any semblance of an "average" starting rotation, they can easily make up 12 games that gets them into contention. The Phils had indicated that they had the wherewithal to pursue BOTH Harper and Machado, so that tells me the assets are there if they want to pull the trigger. Klentak and/or MacPhail were enamoured with their young arms and put all hope in that basket. Someone was out to lunch on that. I see the everyday lineup as being above average and could be very good, anticipating Hoskins gets straightened out from trying pull too much. The only weak spot is 3B. You are right that the Phils never seriously pursued Keuchel. I think they saw him as too old for serious pursuit of a long term contract and were already locked in with Arrieta. Once into the early 30's 'issues' tend to increase. The main focus is ages 24-32. Corbin is slightly younger, but no major health issues of which I'm aware. Phils offered 5 years, Nats offered 6. Balancing the risk of how many "quality" years are you going to get? Corbin in this year's rotation would have been a significant upgrade over anything, other than Nola, the Phillies had.
Kapler has one more year on his contract. Will be interesting to see if they will give him one more shot. However, if they fire him, then Klentak should be ushered out as well. This was a joint effort. Maybe Joe Maddon will want to come home to PA?

I think the Red Sox will end up moving Betts. He won't sign before free agency - and will command a mega deal that I think is uncomfortable for any team. They could get better value for their money by trading him and getting a haul in return - then have the flexibility to pay other guys in the future (i.e. Devers). They need to also figure out something with the pitching staff - and pray to God that Sale can bounce back from this down year. It's really all about that pitching staff.
I hate to see Betts go, but they have offered him massive extensions already. It is clear he would prefer to get his money and play in a place where there is less buzz around the ebs and flows of the season.

Acuna does the exact same thing on every home run he hits - he claps his hands crossing home and stutter steps around third. Baseball is full of weird quirky things, and that's one of them. It's not like he broke that out just for the playoffs. He hit 40+ homers this year, and I'm pretty sure did the same thing on every one of them.

Schildt's biggest gamble, I think, was leaving Wainwright in as long as he did. It ended up not backfiring, but I do not understand that decision. You've got a pen warm and you're going to let Wainwright face Acuna a fourth time with a 1 run lead?

Not sure if this is what you are referring to, but Grienke has a social anxiety issue. He's sort of always been aloof in interviews.
There's a really good profile from Joe Posnanski done 10 years ago when Grienke was with Kansas City. https://www.si.com/more-sports/2009/04/28/zack-greinke

CX500d,
RE: Dodgers/Nationals NLDS Game 4 attendance:
You have no idea what you are talking about. In most cases people buy MLB playoff tickets days in advance of the game. Because MLB counts attendance based on tickets sold, people who stayed away because of the weather (and quite honestly, the weather forecast wasn’t bad; it ended up being worse weather-wise during the game than predicted) would still have been counted in the attendance. The slightly less than 37K announced attendance included nearly 5K unsold tickets, and that was for a game that started only about 30 minutes earlier than a typical weeknight game in a market that has over 6 million people.
NLDS Game 4, with all those unsold tickets and noticeable number of empty seats in various portions of Nationals Park, was an embarrassing showing by the Nationals’ fanbase.

As much as I like postseason baseball, the thing I don't like is that the managers have to handle the game completely differently than they would over the previous 162+ contests.
Bottom line, the Braves middle of the lineup isn't hitting. Acuna has been on base a dozen times and, I think, the only time he's scored was his solo home run. The runs are out there and the series is there for the winning, just gotta get the big guys going.

Just think if Oakland would lose the Raiders, Warriors and A's?
MLB told the A's they can go to Vegas if the city of Oakland doesn't drop its lawsuit that the county of Alemeda be forced to sell their half of the Coliseum to Oakland instead of the A's who are offering more. Oakland can't match the A's offer of $85 million to buy the portion they don't own (owning half already).

Switching gears a bit but wanted to throw an idea I had out there for MLB's pace of play conundrum. Last night the Astros and Rays played a nearly 4 hour 8.5 inning game. Each team used 6 pitchers. Looking at the box score it looks like 6 of those 12 pitchers started in the middle of an inning. My idea is this, why not eliminate the mound warm-up tosses pitchers get when they're inserted in the middle of an inning? Batters don't get a few swings off a BP pitcher when they pinch hit. These pitchers have a full size mound to warm up on out in the bullpen. I say if they come in mid-inning (unless due to injury) they need to throw live from the get-go. In the case of last night's game I think that would've gotten rid of 6 commercial breaks and probably got the game over with 20+ minutes quicker.

Warriors are moving across the bay. It isn't because they weren't drawing fans in Oakland. Same with the Raiders- the first time to LA, now to Vegas.
How many times have there been rumors of the A's leaving? And remember when the Giants were leaving for Washington DC and then to San Jose?

I never have understood those warmup pitches, that's what they are doing in the fricking pen. So I agree with you but that's not gonna make a huge difference. What they need to do is stop these clowns from having to adjust everything after every damn pitch. Just fricking stay in the damn box and hit FFS. The constant adjusting of their gloves or pads or jersey or helmet is mind numbing.

Yeah, that's annoying too. Robinson Cano was the absolute worst at that. That would be a really tough sell to change though but it wouldn't be outrageous to say that if you don't swing (or at least offer) at the previous pitch the pitcher can throw the next pitch whenever he's ready so step out of the box at your own risk. Of course players could get around that by checking their swing on every pitch so they have to reset. It's difficult to enforce any changes around that.

Some nights you just have a game like that. Unfortunate that it happened in a series clincher.
Bush league for the Cardinals to throw at Acuna with a 12 run lead, too.
Braves are in a fine position going forward. Many fans think that the management has to be more judicious with how they use some of the key players during the season. Freddie Freeman, for instance, hardly ever gets a day off (he never asks for one), but promptly had a dud of a series and wasted one at bat after another with men on base. Bad time to have a slump

That's the ridiculous argument about pace of play - there's a simple solution to that problem and it is almost entirely the length of the commercial breaks.

There is good reason for why this happens
MLB regulates and monitors everything about the mound on the field of play
Some teams will play games with the bullpen mounds, change the height, change the slope, shorten or lengthen the landing area, etc
Its important to allow the guy coming in a chance to get a feel for the mound on the field vs what he was on in the bullpen
In college Bradley was infamous for this, at their old stadium the pens were in foul ground down the foul lines
The visitors didn't have a mound, you had a flat surface that may or may not even have a pitching rubber
They claimed it was for the safety of fielders coming into foul territory to attempt to make a play
But somehow THEIR side of the field always had a mound on it...……………..

Oh my, yes. There is a great book called "The Baseball Code"--the unwritten rules of baseball. There was a section looking back at all the 'groundwork' teams field crews would do to their field to give them an edge or screw with the opposition. I remember the Dodgers, back in the 60's, used to add dirt down the infield baselines to 'tilt' toward the infield so that bunts (what are they anymore?)would stay fair when they had their great base running team with Maury Wills and Co. Screwing with the opponents bullpen mound has long been another 'dirty trick'.

1 guy gets red hot, you hit him
other team retaliates by hitting/throwing at somebody

If you get hit with a fastball, 99% chance that was on purpose
You get hit with a slider or cutter, likely one that got away, missed the release point, whatever

It is the big leagues... if they can monitor the mound on the field I don't think it's too much to ask that they do the same to the two mounds in the visitor's bullpen. If MLB is serious about pace of play improvements it's something easy to look into.
And to add to it... if a manager really wants his new relief pitcher to be able to acclimate to the mound on the playing field wait to put him in until the beginning of the next inning so he can get the normal warm up tosses in while the game is in commercial.

I'd agree with you if the Braves weren't trailing in an elimination game. There's just no reason to be petty in that situation. If this was some Saturday evening in July, then maybe. You aren't going to do that in Game 5 while trailing.
I get why the Cards threw at Acuna. I've seen numerous teams hit Acuna because they can't get him out. The Marlins usually just start throwing at him in the first inning. If this was midseason, they'd have thrown at him several games ago. They waited until they had a big enough lead, which is just weak.
I hate it for Acuna, frankly. Opponents think he showboats, but the kid is a near incomparable talent and just has fun playing the game. He is never in anyone's face. He doesn't talk trash. He's just plays with a lot of energy. If you don't like him watching home runs, then throw something he can't hit to the moon.
All the Cardinals managed to do with that is to ensure one of their star players wears a fastball between the shoulder blades next season.

Ozuna was pegged on purpose
Why?
A) He tore them apart
B) The game was OVER before the first 1/2 of the 1st was over, another baserunner not even another run or another 5 runs were going to impact the outcome
Go look at the statcast on the at bats
Both players were hit with fastballs with almost no movement on them, either down nor across
The bean balls were the straightest pitches thrown in either AB
Both were on purpose
The Braves decided to go first, they did
The Cardinals followed suit, as is expected
Warnings were issued, and it was over
The players do a really good job of policing this themselves
I like the warnings after the retaliation so it doesn't get out of hand, but I also like that the warning *usually* doesn't come after the initial gotcha

Anyone read the book, K -the story of baseball through its 10 pitches? I just started, but I can tell I am going to love it. Similar to the Baseball Codes it gives an a deep inside look at the history of the game through the development of the the 10 pitches used in the game. Many anecdotes and interviews with all the great pitchers and catchers as to "how they did it".

Nats have a 2-0 lead in any postseason series since the Expos of 1981... Cards bats are having difficulties getting through Nats pitching...

Ulysses Samuel Harrison, born March 16, 1892, In Missouri, one of ten children, to parents Robert A. Harrison and Amanda Harrison of Paragould, Arkansas. Ulysses was found homeless living in the stands on the Bennett Park baseball grounds of the Detroit Tiger's baseball club in early July, 1908, by Ty Cobb. Ulysses became the teams "good luck charm" of sorts and traveled with the Tigers. It is known that Ty Cobb shielded Ulysses from racist bullies, and establishments, trains, hotels, ballparks, eateries. Ty Cobb employed Ulysses Harrison during baseball's off seasons of 1908 and 1909 in Augusta, Georgia as a general helper for visitors, one being President William Howard Taft, and a host of friends in baseball and otherwise. Ulysses also worked at his Augusta Hupmobile showroom. After this time he moved on to work for other ball clubs. By 1916, Ulysses was married, and worked as a chauffeur for Detroit construction magnate F.H. Hubbard, of Goddard and Hubbard. It is believed that Ty Cobb helped him get this job. Married to Alice Ellis of Detroit, William Ellis, father, and Mary Ellis, mother, by Joseph M. Evans, Clergyman, on July 3, 1915, witnesses Grace A. Evans and Jesse Bridgeman. A later marriage is found to Gladys Liveretia Coates in Chicago, Illinois, on September 1, 1920, and death 1944 in Knoxville, Iowa. Research inspired by Bob Poet.

I find this quite interesting, as Cobb has been considered one of the worst examples of a human being from other accounts. Where'd you find this?

I'd love to find some examples, but the dickhead who wrote the book about Cobb claiming he was a super racist has pretty much been debunked. The guy was trying to sell more books (surprised) so he turned it into a narrative like Pastor Weems did with George Washington- only the other way.
Update- Al Stump was the author.

As Laker said, Al Stump has his own agenda.

"Turns out, Leerhsen does have a hit on his hands. But not the one he intended. The truth he's helped uncover in his book, "Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty," is changing old assumptions and painting a picture of Cobb that -- get this -- actually makes him appear to be a human being.
A flawed human being. A human being whose life did, indeed, come with its fair share of tussles and tumult. But a human being who was not the racist lunatic so many baseball fans assume him to be.If you buy one version of the image of Ty Cobb," Leerhsen said, "it's so one-dimensional and paper thin that it's almost like a cartoon character. He's always in the same emotional place, just like Bugs Bunny or Wile E. Coyote, always doing the same thing when we check in on them."

The Cardinals scored 10 runs in the first inning of their clinching game over the Braves, then only scored 9 runs after that (3 in the rest of that Braves game, then 6 total in the NLCS against the gNats).
Washington scored 7 runs in the first inning of their clinching game over the Cardinals, and now will only score 6 total runs in the World Series.

The Nats/Cardinals series is about as unpalatable a baseball series as it could get for Atlanta.
Also a lot of chatter about how MLB changed the baseballs from what they were using in the regular season. Seems like the data supports that - balls hit in the playoffs with certain angle and exit velocity are traveling about 30 feet shorter than they were in the regular season.
