Both the ‘18 and ‘13 teams were undefeated and dominate. Who do you think is better or would win head to head?

I'm plenty confident also but it's a really long off season that starts in 1 week that this question can be debated during if they win next Saturday.

This is fair. I just had the thought and was wondering what others thought.

I can’t wait till this run ends as all great dynasties do. I don’t really dislike the Bison, they’re constant winning just gets old.

Why didn’t you wait until the game was over. The answer to your poll is the 2013 team. Close the thread.

Well IF NDSU beats EWU, and that’s still a big IF because there’s always a chance. I’d say 2013. They just seemed downright unstoppable, I never thought anyone could beat them that year. I can’t say the same about 2018.

The Bison offense is going to push that defense all over the field.

Ok, so now I'm ready to weigh in on this. Going through it position group by position group I'd say the 2013 team had the better defense and special teams and the 2018 team had the better offense. Despite not playing an FBS team I think the 2018 team actually had a tougher schedule since the MVFC was better in 2018 than it was in 2013 and the 2018 team played 3 seeded teams in the playoffs compared to the 2013 team only playing 1 (who was the #7 seed).
In the end I'd still give the edge to the 2013 team by a hair but it's really close.

I don't really have stats to back that up but the 2018 team gave up a lot of big plays and our special teams play was very average this year.

If we go with the argument that the schedules strength was similar. I have to vote 2018. 2013 defense was a bit better but 2018 offense was a bit better than 2013. Looking at a lot of the end of season stats only a few thing really jump out as being vastly different and most of those are in favor of 2018
FG % (we are talking about less than 1 FGA per game though 2013 (77%) 2018 (60%)
Red Zone Defense - 2013 (67%) 2018 (52%)
4TH Down Defense - (talking about ~ 2 4D attempts/game) 2013 (44%) 2018 (21%)
Turnover margin - 2013 (+4) 2018 (+19)
With everything else being spooky similar how good 2018 was in the Red Zone on D and the turnover margin is what pushed them over the top for me. Also scoring margin is roughly 1.5 points in 2018 favor

Sagarin has the 2013 team rated about 3 points higher than the 2018 team.

2013 had slightly more star power, especially on defense so I’d go with 2013 in a 1 game matchup. 2018 had much better depth at practically every position, so I’d rather have 2018 team if the season had to start from scratch.
Also, due to the depth that should translate into a pretty good 2019 team. WR is the only concerning area entering next year

Here's how the stats break down between the 2013 and 2018 teams:

Like was said earlier the 2013 defense was statistically better and the 2018 offense was statistically better. But there are a few eye openers like the ridiculously good red zone execution both offensively and defensively for the 2018 team and the stupid good 56% 3rd down conversion rate for the 2013 team. 54 rushing TDs for the 2018 team is just incredible also (19 more than the 2013 juggernaut).
One kind of interesting quirk about that 2013 team is they dominated like they did despite "only" being +4 in turnover margin on the year. The 2018 team was +19.

That opponent interception number sounds really high, where did that come from, also, I thought our red zone "opponent" TD % for 2018 was in the 20's.

Offense - 2018
Defense - 2013
Special Teams - 2013
Depth - 2018
Stars - 2013
Edge goes to 2013 team.

The Bison were ballhawks this year. 15 INTs just from the trio of Cox, Grimsley, and Hendricks.
The opponent redzone TD% was in the 20s until SDSU and EWU went 3 for 3 converting redzone opportunities to TDs against the Bison defense in their last two games. With only 24 redzone opportunities allowed on the year (including those last 3) that was enough to bump it up a good amount.

Opponent interceptions is interceptions thrown by opponents or in other words how many INT did NDSU get. Grimsley (6), Hendricks (5), Cox (4), Bridges, Allison, Tutsie (2), Jordheim & Wimbush (1)
Red zone D was 23 attempts with 4 rush TD, 4 pass Td, 4 FG. could be 9 TD depending on how you classify the fake FG. NCAA stats doesnt count it but NDSU did on their page

The red zone TD number that was in the 20's was talked about during the game and it is amazing how few time opposing teams got in the red zone that the 3 for 3 conversion would move the number that much. I should have known better than to call you out on this, I got owned the last time I did it as well. :D

Now that I look closer at this it sure seems that the style of SS play difference between Colten Heagle (2013) and Robbie Grimsley (2018) could explain a fair amount of the defensive stats. Heagle was a run stopper and pretty fair in pass coverage. Grimsley is the opposite. Both are consensus AAs to my knowledge and shaped each of their teams defense style
