All but 4 bowl games with G5 teams are done, Arizona, Independence, Military, and Fiesta Bowl left for G5. Military and Independence Bowls feature a G5 vs P5.
Now most remaining bowl games are P5 vs P5, so I figured we needed a P5 thread.
Minnesota taking it to Georgia Tech in Paul Johnson’s last game 13-3, and in scoring position in the Quick Lane Bowl.
Up after this is the Cheez-It Bowl between TCU and California.

always interesting to see all the players that end up suspended and/or academically ineligible for their team's bowl game.
and then there are those that choose to sit out because they don't want to risk injury or diminish their NFL draft prospects.

34-10 now. Gophers have looked good on both sides of the ball today. Johnson is a really good receiver. And when a Ibrahim gets over 200 yards rushing it gets one sided.

They might schedule NDSU again, NDSU can beat them at their own game, bring 20K to TCF, and NDSU can still get the best recruits in Minnesota who don't want due to not having the #SouthernSpeed that Row-The-Boat U desires for that useless spread offense.

I heard that it was the TCU SID who got run over by the ref on the INT return in OT. What the heck was he doing that far out on the field? He deserved the penalty and I hope he is sore tomorrow.

Temple was wearing the ugliest uniforms that I've seen all year. Their official colors are cherry and white, but they were wearing black helmets, gray jerseys with red numbers and black pants. An announcer's nightmare. I just don't understand why teams wear gray jerseys.

True about the ACC championship.
They're better with their current setup. The ACC simply isn't good enough to go all in on. Being able to play a rotating slate with Clemson, FSU, Syracuse and Virginia Tech while scheduling games with Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, Stanford, USC, Michigan State etc. is far better.
If anyone should move it's Clemson to the SEC. They're so much better than everyone in the ACC it's comical.

Texas took cheap shots and the end on Georgia’s QB and no Georgia players stood up for him. They were beaten physically and mentally by a Texas team that wanted to be there, Georgia was still thinking about missing the playoffs.
Probably true. Was a physical and strong effort by Texas. As sometimes happens in bowl games, one team certainly looks more invested in the outcome than the other.

This kid is on a different level and that includes the freak of nature known as Tebow. If he can shred Alabama apart like this and make them look silly on defense, I don't see a team stopping him at this level of football. Just give him a defense that can hold their opponents under 30 points and I believe he will take care of the rest. There is no way this kid is 19. I wouldn't be surprised if the following teams are looking at Trevor: Every team not named the Kansas City Chiefs. xlolx
In all seriousness though, I wonder if the NFL will try and alter the draft process for the #1 pick just to ensure the product in the NFL does not drop off drastically in 2020 just so teams can try and tank to get him. No team will trade from #1 unless they get another Herschel Walker type of offer and even then, this type of kid comes around 1x in a generation if not less, so I don't know if any team would risk losing him to another team and knowing you have to live with the fact you "traded away Trevor". If I am Goodell, I am already figuring out a plan to sit down with the owners and make it clear that any sort of tanking will be taken as collusion and therefore will be met with severe penalties/forfeited draft picks. 2020 could be some of the worst football seen in the NFL in a long time just for the prospect of getting the franchise player who can make a bad/OK team an immediate playoff contender.

One thing you guys have to understand though, as someone who lives in South Carolina, I hate Clemson worse than Bama. Like, I don't even dislike Bama. On one level, I get tired of their constant success but it's not to the point of being uninteresting. Like, with NDSU, I just get tired that they win a lot. I mean...it kind of has? USC has never been spectacular. From 1980-2015 Clemson was the only team of Clemson/SC to have a national title and they had more wins in the rivalry and no one cares about non-FBS teams (that includes not caring about CCU) so Clemson had more bragging rights.
If Clemson didn't play in the ACC they wouldn't have their last two national championships. Like NDSU, Clemson can recruit/promise to compete for a conference/national title every year and even most of the teams in the SEC can't promise that. They've supplainted the 2000s Ohio State teams has the Saddam Hussein of College Football.

The Egg Bowl just had one of the most ridiculous endings i've ever seen.
- Ole Miss completes a hail mary on 4th and Biloxi to extend the game.
- Ole Miss scores a TD with 4 seconds left to cut the deficit to 21-20, the player who scored gets down on all 4s like a dog, lifts his leg like he's pissing on the MSU logo. As result there's a 15 yard penalty on the XP. As fate would have it the Rebels kicker missed the lengthy xp....
Chip, were you at this one?!?!
Yes, I was at the Ole Piss and Miss Game. What a ridiculous ending. The funny thing is had the one Ole Miss player not left the bench after the missed extra point (along with about 3/4 of the Mississippi State team leaving their bench), the onsides kick would have been a non-trivial play had Ole Miss recovered; they could have tried a long field goal to win the game in that scenario.
If the Ole Miss receiver had not committed one of the more stupid penalties of all-time, and Ole Miss found a way to win the game, the game would probably have been remembered for the Rebels gaining 57 yards on a 4th and 24 play.

Incidentally, my brother is telling me the scuttlebutt is Joe Moorhead is on his way out at Mississippi State due to mutual dissatisfaction, but Moorhead might fight the Mississippi State brass on the terms of the separation. My brother said Moorhead gets $4 million if he's fired but $9 million if he's bought out.

This is a game where it will never get old telling the story of being there live! Easily one of the most ridiculous rivalry game endings of all time! I'm not too familiar with the sports culture of Mississippi but if it's typical SEC fandom that Ole Miss player might want to go take a vacation to the U.P. of Michigan until the New Year.

"To me it was an exclamation point on the narrative that I'm not the right man for this job or this team, or that I can't coach in this league," Moorhead said. "This is my school, my team, and this is my program. They'll have to drag my Yankee ass out of here."

Having attended three Egg Bowl games (two in Starkville, one in Oxford) and visited my brother at Mississippi State a half dozen times, I can tell you the Mississippi State/Mississippi rivalry is one of the most bitter in college football. Some proof of that extreme bitterness include:
*The phone escort service scandal that brought down former coach Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss was caused in part by Mississippi State über fan Steve Robertson, who discovered the pattern of improper phone calls while doing research on a book examining possible Ole Miss recruiting improprieties under Freeze. (It should be noted Ole Miss fans had disparaged Robertson for many years prior to Freeze scandal, calling him "Rose Bowl" after he predicted Mississippi State would play in the BCS championship game in Pasadena after the 2001 season; Mississippi State finished 3-8 that season.)
*After the 2016 Egg Bowl, when underdog Mississippi State curb stomped Ole Miss 55-20 in Oxford, some stores in Starkville had T-shirts commemorating the big win the very next day. The one I thought was most amusing was one showing Interstate Highway signs for "Interstate 55 Starkville, Interstate 20 Oxford". (That pun works in the case of Mississippi, because Interstates 20 and 55 both travel through Mississippi, intersecting in the Jackson area.)
*Mississippi State fans routinely refer to the University of Mississippi as "Ole Piss" and "that school up north". Ole Miss fans like to disparage Mississippi State's agricultural origins, its cowbell tradition, and the plainness of Starkville.
IMO, much of the bitterness in the rivalry derives from the fact Mississippi is a mostly rural state with a relatively small population (about 3 million); there are no major or even semi-major cities in Mississippi that could even be candidates for a major league pro sports team (unlike say Alabama, which has Birmingham, a city that has hosted teams in upstart "major" pro football leagues that challenged the NFL, including both the WFL in the 1970s and the USFL in the 1980s; Alabama also has over 50% more people than Mississippi). Mississippi's small population and the fact that it has TWO schools that could be considered the state's flagship school makes it hard a college program in the state to be successful at the national level, especially in football, the region's most popular sport and a sport people in Mississippi and the southeast U.S. in general take very, very seriously. Additionally, neither Starkville (Mississippi State) nor Oxford (Ole Miss) are particularly big towns, or at least the kind of towns one would associate with a state flagship university. To me personally, Starkville reminds me A LOT of Indiana, PA where IUP is located; in all honesty Indiana is probably a somewhat nicer town and feels ever so slightly bigger, but the two towns are very comparable in size. (Starkville feels and actually is way, WAY smaller than State College, where Penn State is located and my personal point of reference for a large college town.) Starkville's humble, unspectacular feel is the reason for its ironic nickname "Stark Vegas"; it is about as far from Las Vegas as a large, state flagship college town can be. I'm not as familiar with Oxford, but I know that although it is considered a nicer town than Starkville, it really isn't any larger than Mississippi State's hometown.
Steve Robertson (the Mississippi State fan I mentioned above) actually put it best when describing the Mississippi State/Ole Miss rivalry; he once said of the rivalry "It's the two runt puppies in the SEC West fighting for the hind teat. When you finally get locked on that hind teat, you do whatever you have to do to stay there, even if the other guy has to starve."

In the case of Luke's firing, many Ole Miss players are upset by the decision; a handful of players walked out of the meeting where they were told Luke was let go. Also, the firing was announced when Luke, a former Ole Miss player and assistant coach, was in the middle of a meeting with a recruit.

What’s interesting about your comment Laker is sometimes programs “graduate” from “excited to be there” to “expect to be in a bowl every year or almost every year”. Temple is a good example of this. Ten years ago (2009), the Owls posted their first winning season in 19 years (1990) and were selected to play in a bowl game for the first time in 30 years (1979). Temple fans were thrilled the Owls were playing in a bowl game, even if it was a lower tier game at the time and it wasn’t at a warm weather site. (The 2009 Temple team played in the EagleBank Bowl, now known as the Military Bowl, at RFK Stadium in DC during the bowl’s second year of existence. It was COLD that day, probably in the mid to upper 20s F and windy.) Fast forward 10 years, and Temple is playing in its 5th straight bowl game this season, and has been bowl eligible 6 straight years and 9 of the last 11 seasons. It also won an AAC division championship (2015) and overall AAC league championship (2016) during that time. Now, Temple fans want the Owls to play P5 opponents in bowl games (and beat them), and really want to see the Owls grab an elusive NY6 bowl bid. Appearing in bowl games has become old hat.
At the P5 level, the program that probably best exemplifies this is Northwestern, with the change point occurring in 1995. Northwestern fans probably expect the Wildcats to play in bowl games most seasons, but for many years prior to 1995, Northwestern fans would probably have been thrilled to see their team play in any bowl game.

Notre Dame has turned down bowl invites in the past. I would have been fine with them doing it again. I don't think its worth risking injury or forcing draft eligible players to make a business decision if they should play or not. 10-2 was a darn good year and just move on to 2020.

If I'm Kelly I wouldn't play any of the sure fire NFL guys and would try to rotate a lot of underclassman. Basically use it as a glorified scrimmage. If we win great, if not the goal was to get guys reps and game experience.

DI-A/FBS level college football has the most idiotic postseason in U.S. sports, mainly because most of the postseason is anticlimactic. The NFL proves every year that a regular season can have a lot of meaning with every game or almost every game meaning a lot to playoff contenders (and with all or almost all of those games occurring against teams that can beat them on a given day, which often is not true in college football because of the much greater talent disparity) but have that regular season BUILD towards a postseason that has even bigger games. In DI-A/FBS football, the regular season builds towards...nothing for most teams (except a meaningless bowl game), and the momentum that is built by regular season action peters out.
The DI-A/FBS regular season would become a lot more meaningful IMO if 1) the playoff field was expanded to 12 or 16 teams (though even 8 teams would be an improvement over what exists now, just like the 4 team playoff was an improvement over the lack of a playoff that existed previously) and 2) the higher ranked teams were allowed to host early round playoff games and only the championship game was held at a neutral site (i.e. scrap the long-existing bowl system). The minor bowls could be kept around, and teams eliminated in the earlier rounds of the playoffs could still play in bowl games if they wanted, but using the bowls as part of the playoff system would be eliminated.

If nothing else pair App State or Air Force against Notre Dame and let Wazzu and Iowa State play in one of the true participation bowls.

This is why the FBS should go back to the BCS system. Almost all of the CFP semifinal games have been blowouts since they started the playoffs. Oklahoma vs Georgia in 2017 is the only good semifinal game I can think of, hopefully Ohio State vs Clemson is much better.

I mean, not really. They're blowouts because there are a few elite programs that very few teams can stay on the field with. It doesn't matter if a computer sets the matchup or a selection committee.
Besides, it doesn't matter who played LSU in the semi finals - they were going to get steamrolled. There are probably only three teams in the country that can play with the Tigers - Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State. I'm confident in Alabama, because that was a hard fought game. I'm less confident in the latter two because neither Clemson nor OSU has played a team remotely as good as LSU is. Auburn and Georgia are probable better than both Clemson and OSU.

Ohio State has come out on fire! 10-0 Buckeyes midway through the first quarter....
T Higgins looks like he might have a concussion which is bad news for the Clemson offense.

Georgia's offense is inconsistent and Gus Malzhan team's tend to have a "WTF?" game a little too often. With that said, both are easily in the upper echelon of college football. LSU looked ridiculous today but Oklahoma was a pretty flaky 4th team imo. The Sooners knew they were outmatched and threw in the towel early.

Still blows my mind that Fields is somehow playing for Ohio State right now. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields grew up about 20 miles from one another in North Georgia.

Could be a game changer. Clemson cashes in on that drive with a TD. Ohio State has dominated for the most part but it's only 16-7. I think playing a bunch of middling ACC teams has hurt Clemson to start. As the game wears on I think they'll have adapted. Even so by then it might be too late.

The ACC has stunk for a while and Clemson's still good.
The targeting play was a tough call on Ohio State, but its not "bad officiating," as some argue. It's the rule. It's not really a judgment call.

It really bottomed out this season. Syracuse was legit last season with Dungy at QB. Miami in 2017 had a really good year with NC State and Virginia Tech being solid too. Prior to that there's Top 15 FSU and Louisville teams. As it is, Clemson now is basically what Florida State was to the ACC in the 90's...

The noise and Lawrence's reaction really added to the optics. Relative to the targeting call in the LSU game this was just a bad break for the OSU kid imo. Nothing dirty about it but he did lower his head which led to a pretty nasty collision.

I mean, VT was one of the ACC's better teams and it took everything they had to beat Furman this season.
I give most top 25 FCS programs a punchers chance against the ACC outside of Clemson.

That was one of the worst cheap shots i've seen this year. Burrow was running by him to his left yet all he did was eye up the running back and literally launched himself at his head. That was borderline criminal.
I'm starting to wish there was a targeting rule that just had a 15 yard penalty and one that still had the ejection element for egregious acts.

I just don’t like the playoff system, it’s seriously devalued the NY6 bowls as they’re now seen as consolidation prizes rather than an actual achievement.
Also if they went back to the BCS it’d actually give G5 teams a better shot at making it, UCF never got higher then 8 despite going undefeated for 2 straight seasons. Back in 2007 South Florida jumped all the way to 2, granted they were part of the Big East which was a decent conference. Boise made it all the way to 3 as well.

Boise State might have been #3 in the BCS but they had a great shot to go to the title game in 2010 had they not blown the Nevada game. Their kicker missed two relatively short FGs iirc which cost them. Prior to the Nevada loss there was growing sentiment for the Broncos to get in over either Auburn or Oregon. Their program really hasn't been the same since.

Right, but does it really matter, though?
Do we really need to see Memphis or App State lose by 50 to LSU?

Boise State at that time was considerably better than App State and Memphis in 2019. By 2010 the Broncos had been on the national scene for 6-7 years. Their win over Oklahoma had earned them ton of interest. Plus, the whole blue turf/being from Idaho thing added to their national intrigue. What also helped them was TCU basically playing at a similar/elite level in the Mountain West. Both of them beat P5 teams in the reg and often really good ones on a big stage.
My guesstimate is there's probably 2-3 G5 teams a decade worthy of a title shot. But given how equity is earned this day in age they'll never have the momentum to get there....

It took Boise State years to try and gin up enough interest to even get in the conversation, though.
It's just tough for any "mid-major" program to convince a national audience that a 12-0 G5 team is worthy of a title shot. They just don't play enough nationally relevant games.
