It wasn't his knee- he snapped an Achilles tendon. He's a great athlete and despite the rivalry I do hope he's fully recovered for his senior year.

It's great that you're able to sign so many MT players and win with them.

Obviously ND doesn't have anywhere near the population of MT, but I hope someday NDSU can have 1/4th-1/3rd ND players.

It is a nice luxury to have. As of the current spring roster we have 50 Montanans on the roster. Every year the HS ranks tend to pick it up in terms of proper coaching. Most kids want to play for the GRIZ or CATS, even the better players occasionally turn down bigger schools in favor of instate schools. We also are fortunate that regional players from WA, ID, CO, OR, and CA will at the very least listen when we call.

Ironically enough the out of state kids are sold on the local atmoshere being so above and beyond extreme for the team. By time they get to University, they have been welcomed at the airport, and anywhere they go locally. Then they see the GRIZ HALL of FAME and are pleasantly surprised at that. Recently the new videos are also top notch. Hard to say "no" anymore to the GRIZ. I just hope it lasts regardless of FCS or BCS affiliation. GO GRIZ!

Last fall, while first Reggie Bradshaw and then Thomas Brooks-Fletcher were getting a bulk of the carries for the Grizzly football team, Lex Hilliard and Greg Coleman could only watch.

Well, they didn't just watch.

“We had this contest,” said Hilliard, Montana's leading rusher in 2004-05. “We'd throw the ball up and catch it behind our back. I remember we got up to 70 times in a row. We'd be dancing around the rest of practice, saying we won, just trying to keep our competitive edge.”


Hilliard, a Walter Payton Award candidate heading into last fall, didn't play a down in the 2006 season after tearing his Achilles tendon in fall camp. That appeared to set the stage for Coleman, a 235-pound transfer from Iowa State, to step to the forefront.

Then the junior broke his foot early in UM's second game and sat out most of the season as well.

“It actually happened when my shoe came off against South Dakota State,” Coleman said. “I just made a weird cut.”

Down two big bruisers, Montana kept rolling, throwing in the Louisville transfer, Bradshaw, and redshirt freshman Brooks-Fletcher. The Griz won 12 straight games before a loss to Massachusetts in the D-I Football Championship Subdivision semifinals.

But it wasn't easy for Hilliard and Coleman. Coleman had it tough two ways.

“Coming in and knowing Lex, seeing Lex, and in the fall him getting hurt - it was a big load,” said Coleman. “It was like filling Zeus's shoes. He's really the man around here. It was tough, but things happen.”

Then he ended up standing alongside Hilliard at practice, in sweats.

“It was a good thing that I had him with me, because he kept my head in it,” Coleman said. “I think we kind of fed off each other and made it through the season. But it was a long season for both of us. Real long.”

Coleman has two seasons left. Hilliard, still in pursuit of Yo Humphery's school career rushing mark - at 2,884 yards, he needs 1,187 to get the record - has one.

Right now they're working out the kinks in spring drills, sharing the carries with Bradshaw, Brooks-Fletcher, Brandon Utterback, Andrew Schmidt and Rico Didell.

The 215-pound Bradshaw, the Grizzlies' leading rusher with 572 yards in 2006, has been hampered some by a sore hamstring, but remains a speedy option in Montana's attack. Brooks-Fletcher, 202 pounds, combined strength and speed to average 5.4 yards a carry last fall (he gained 479 yards in 11 games).

Coleman managed 34 yards on 18 carries before his injury, and took his redshirt.

And Hilliard is Hilliard. He hasn't had a scrimmage carry this spring, but then he had only nine carries in last spring's scrimmages. The only slight cause of concern came early in drills, when he took a pass and had his feet go out from under him while he worked up the sideline.

“And everybody went, ‘Whoooa,' ” head coach Bobby Hauck said.

The 237-pounder had only slipped.

“Lex is looking good,” Bradshaw said. “You wouldn't even know he was hurt.”

That leaves the Griz more less where they were last spring, with a full stable of running backs.

What to do? Actually, it's simple. Compete.

“Aw, shoot, I mean, we're still battling right now,” said Hilliard.

“It's all about working, now,” Coleman said. “It's a battle, every day. You can just feel the level - you've got to have it (the intensity). Every time you drop the ball it's like, ‘Damn!' You've got to be on it every day.”

All that talent should bode well for the Griz, who return nearly their entire starting offensive line.

“It helps out everybody,” said Cole Bergquist, the quarterback with the most experience handing off to Hilliard. “I can only speak for myself, but it helps me out a ton, because the better they're running, the more it opens up the passing game.

“Not only can our running backs run, they can block, too. That's a big part of the game.”

You only have to go back to Hilliard's sophomore season to see a team with similar firepower: James Madison rotated three backs during its 2004 title run. The Dukes beat Montana in the championship.

“Either way it's going to work out,” said Coleman. “It's going to work out for the Griz.”

Quarterbacking the 2004 Griz was Craig Ochs, who just returned to UM as an assistant coach.

“I've been thinking about that more now that Craig's here,” Hilliard said. “We've got another chance to go back there. I want to go back and win there, since he's back on the squad.”

Ochs could say the same about Hilliard, who wants nothing more than to return to form - and Chattanooga, Tenn., host of the FCS title game. Like Coleman, Hilliard is coming off the first major injury of his football career.

“I can't complain,” said Hilliard, “Everything happens for a reason. Luckily I have another year and I can finish up next fall, and have my (sociology) degree.”

That said, it's good to be back.

“After coming off an injury, being out here and being able to be in pads - when I was sitting on the sidelines last year, no pads, no jersey,” Hilliard said. “It's a lot better to be out there now.”

Note that U of Montana had running backs by committee. Total 1571 yards, 19 TD's between the three. Kind of interesting considering our 1st and 2nd string RB's were out for the season.
