"We just have to get off to a good start this year, and July and August will take care of themselves." [or mumbled words to that effect]-- Charlie Manuel, 4/4/07 post-game press conference

Well, guess what? The Phuggin' Phils are off to another great start. Just got swept at home by the Braves, with tough road series coming up at Florida and NY. We could be looking at 0-9 real quick. The bullpen has been atrocious, the clutch hitting as bad as last year, the baserunning moronic, the game-day managing execrable. Manuel's press conference last night -- to the limited extent that it was intelligible at all -- was pathetic and uninspired. Why wait until mid-May? FIRE UNCLE CHARLIE TODAY!!! And tell that genius Pat Gillick not to let the clubhouse door hit him in the azz on the way out, either.

Thanks for allowing my rant.

I've been out in the mountains of PA all day and finally got within decent radio signal to hear the final out..To quote Charlie Brown (who's got more brains than the OTHER Chollie) "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGHH!"

I'm glad I was able to sell a bunch of my season tickets that I couldn't use, early..UFR...xsmhx

I'm guessing it's a good thing for the Phils that it doesn't snow during baseball season.:)

On a good note; Coastal alum, Mike Costanzo has been promoted to the AA Reading Phillies.

Gillick needs to read "Money Ball" and learn what a couple of Harvard grads can do for your team (while you spend less money)

Brilliant book...

Settle down folks. The Phillies will be just fine. I can't believe how quickly that Phillies fans are always ready to mutiny. You sound like George Steinbrenner for crying out loud! For a team that has won exactly ONE world championship and has only made it to FOUR World Series in its history, you need to get a grip. When all is said and done, the Phils should be fighting the Mets for first and should also be in the hunt for the wild card. There is a reason why they play 162 games and there are what, 158 left? BTW, Pat Gillick has been pretty successful EVERYWHERE he has been in the past and he already is making strides with building the Phils into a team that can stock itself from within its own farm system. Gillick won back-to-back World Series titles with the Blue Jays and built Seattle into a team that set a record for single-season wins. Neither of those teams have been competitive since Gillick left. Teams that are quick to make irrational changes are the ones who find themselves in the second division, year-in and year-out.

As far as Money Ball is concerned, look at the teams that have used that appproach. Billy Beane wins a few division titles, but always sees his team collapse in the playoffs. What did DePodesta do with the Dodgers? He created chaos, nearly ruined a good team, with an excellent farm system and got fired. Riccardi has done nothing of substance in Toronto. Outside of Theo Epstein's one moment of World Series glory in Boston, the jury is still out on much of the Money Ball approach. I am a member of SABR and like the statistical approach as much as anyone, but everything has to be done within reason and not everything about Money Ball is sound.

Funny enough...it snowed for a bit this afternoon...not sure if any came down at the stadium, but here just outside the city it was sticking a bit to the newly laid mulch...xrotatehx

The first two games the starting pitching was great...obviously today not so much...today would've been easier to take had they got things done in the first two games...really should be 2-1...slow starts always come back to haunt them...xoopsx

Phils announced today the acquisition of Rosario from Toronto for the bullpen. Deal was for cash. Gullick moving quickly based upon the woeful display by the pen in the first three games...xsmhx

One of my biggest memories of Phillies fans was when I saw the Phils and the Giants play back in the 1970s. Mike Schmidt hits THREE consecutive HRs and his fourth at-bat is caught against the fence in his final trip to the plate. The next day, he strikes out four times and the fans are booing the guy. Classy folks back there!

Thanks, Mr.C. I'll take your message to heart and try to remember it in August when the Phils are, oh, 10 games out.xrolleyesx

Mike Costanzo had a home run in his first AA at bat in Reading yesterday and followed it up with another one today. He's 3 for 8 at the plate with a .375BA.

Well, Pat the Bat did what he's supposed to do today. With Phils leading 5-2 in the seventh, the Marlins walked Howard to put men on first and second to pitch to Burrell. He knocked it into the left field seats for a 3-run dinger. If he can do that with some frequency, we may see some positive stuff this year. Moyer went into the 7th inning, also, which was great to see. Final score, 8-2.

Also had a great catch! Looks like 159-3! xrotatehx

Shheeeoooot.... I never thought of it that way before. I'm going to the Phils-D'Backs games at Chase Field next month. Can you and I go over a list of acceptable times to boo my Phillies?
xrolleyesx

If Santa Claus shows up, you can boo him, but Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are off-limits. Pat Burrell is open for debate. It sounds like the Phillies relievers are going to be th bigger targets this season.

Phils now 1-4 with their 8-5 loss to Florida. Pluses: J-Roll's 3-run inside-the-parker and Utley's first RBI of the year. Minuses: Howard 0-5 with 3 more Ks, Myers and Madson (again) shredded, another game with 10+ strikeouts for the Phillie batters.xnonono2x

Flash in the pan alert?? Ryan Howard looks like the white, left-handed version of Pat Burrell.
