No thread created until now...
We'll see what a fully-rested (but playoff-inexperienced) Aggie team can do damage against a surprise playoff entrant and lucky winner (in the first round) in UNI.
My final margin prediction: UC Davis in a shootout, or maybe at least 1 score.

All depends on which UNI team shows up. Like plenty of others have said, they're really Jekyll and Hyde this year. I've seen a decent number of UNI games this season (watched probably half of them) including yesterday's game and yesterday was the worst I'd seen them play all season. That includes their losses to YSU (watched on TV) and WIU (watched in person). If that's the UNI team that travels to UC Davis, they're going to get steamrolled.
However, I also saw their games against NDSU and SDSU. Outside of the last quarter against NDSU (when NDSU usually takes over after wearing a team down), they played like a team that could pretty much compete with anyone in the FCS. If that team shows up, I think the game will be a close one and UNI could pull out a win. Outside of the Aggies completely falling flat on their faces, I don't see UNI blowing out UC Davis.

This game. Davis has a great offense with Doss and Meier but the JMU O that year was spectacular. I still expect UC Davis to put up a decent number. I don’t know too much about the UNI D. They came up with some big takeaways yesterday. Just slowing up the Davis offense and getting off the field will be helpful.
Davis has no defense. I didn’t see much from the UNI passing game yesterday but the running game looked great. I think they should have just ran the ball all game. I guess it just depends. Like I said, I’ve seen UNI four times this season and they look different depending on the week. Maybe they play to the competition? If so then I guess I should expect their best game come Saturday evening out in California.
You of course know all that stuff as a UNI fan. SHSU sucks, thanks for pointing that out! Looking foward to this game. Best of luck to both teams.

Yeah, they're generally a much stronger passing team, but they just weren't able to get anything going in the passing game. I don't know if it was just because the run game seemed to be working ok, so they stuck with that, or the timing was off, or what. UNI has only had two games previously where they had more rushing yards than passing yards. One was the INSU game, where they shut out the Sycamores and spent a lot of time just running the ball to eat clock. The other was the YSU game where they played like crap.
The game against Lamar was their second lowest yardage through the air this season. They don't have any 1 specific receiver who does really well because they have like 3-4 who are all pretty decent and they usually spread things around a bit, but they didn't seem to do that yesterday. For example, Deion McShane, who's #2 in receiving yards on the team and has some really good speed (as evidenced by kickoff returns of 59 and 47 yards), but was barely in on offense and only had two catches.
It didn't seem like Lamar was doing anything spectacular on defense either, it's just that UNI wasn't even trying to get the receiving game going. I feel like if they'd worked to get that going once they had the run game established, they would have done a much better job at moving the ball and putting up points. Lamar was dead last in the entire FCS in their pass defense going into this game, giving up 311 yards, but UNI only gets 107 yards against Lamar?...they put up 362 yards against NDSU...222 against FBS Iowa...but only 107 against the worst pass defense in the division? That tells me that either something was off or they just weren't even trying with that aspect.
UNI got REALLY lucky with all the turnovers and missed FGs on Lamar's part. They got away with this one, but they won't have that luxury against the Aggies.

UNIs OC was gone yesterday and most of the week from what I hear for to a family death. That could explain a lot.
The passing game was also hurt by drops yesterday. There was one WR in particular that dropped 4 on his own, including one in the end zone where there wasn't a player working 29 yards of him... And the ball was snapped at the like the 9. But I'm not allowed to talk about that with this kid apparently
There was also a really bad OPI penalty that wiped a 40 plus yard to pass off the board.
Uni has struggled with the run all year and Eli had been good through the air. Without an OC and a run game syddenly gashing a defense I don't know that the passing game rhythm ever developed. Eli was off on throws. One of McShane's catches was a full speed dive to ban the ball of the turf. If the ball had been even knee height McShane houses it with his speed. What was a 10ish yard completion becomes 60ish.
He looked like he did against Montana. He rebound fine from that with 222 in 2 quarters at Iowa (who finished with the big 10s best defense)
That's enough serious football talk from me

So, not to disparage Lamar, but was UNI playing down a little or are they just not that good? Only watched one of their games this year. I would think Davis in any event, but seems like it could have been a one score affair, before yesterday. Thinking a bit more now.

UNI threw for 360 yards against NDSU but only 107 against Lamar.
Sure they had the run game going against Lamar but I thought the play calling was ultra conservative and it damn near cost them. I kept waiting for UNI to break the game open but they didn't or couldn't.
The Panthers can play defense though. If they can get some balance offensively this should be a good game. If their offense does what they did against Lamar they will be in trouble.

So, not to disparage Lamar, but was UNI playing down a little or are they just not that good? Only watched one of their games this year. I would think Davis in any event, but seems like it could have been a one score affair, before yesterday. Thinking a bit more now.A few different things
1. UNIs offense was very uncharacteristicly off. Not having your OC most of the week and on game day will do that. Uni also had a 40 or 50 yard td pass called back on a non existent pick play opi 20 yards down field. Also had another TD dropped while completely wide open on a third down. Also a bunch of drops elsewhere.
B. Lamar had something like 250 of their 417 yards on 6 plays. All 13 of their points came in the first 7 minutes of the game and first two possessions. The first TD was a 73 yard WR screen that was stuffed at the LOS but UNI didn't take an angle to keep edge contain. Then a few plays were the QB ran around for 5 seconds and just chucked is as hard as he could down field. They didn't consistently move the ball. UNI lived in the back field. UNI had 5 sacks and 7 TFL. Even when they didn't get a sack there was probably 12 or 14 other drop backs that uni had a guy with his hands on the QB but not enough to bring him down before he got outside the pocket.
You can say uni was fortunate to get fumbles, but uni is one of the best at forcing them. Uni has forced more than 1 per game. Also have 17 picks on the season. UNIs defense is also 6th in TO machine at plus 13.
Will UNI win? I don't know. I do know Lamar was a hell of an anomaly for the offense. Outside of Lamar he's a 60+% guy that averages like 12 ypc.

It's also worth noting with the OC out and Farley even more in control of the offense uni got even more conservative, somehow, than usual once they got the lead. UNI forced a TO on LUs ensuing possession. Rather than trying to stretch the lead UNI went
rush for 2 yards
rush for 6 yards
rush for 7 yards
rush for 9 yards
rush for 1 yard
rush for 9 yards
rush for 4 yards
pass incomplete
pass incomplete dropped by the same kid that dropped the TD in the first quarter
Punt
To kill 5 minutes in that drive.
Then went and killed 3 more minutes going
rush for 2 yards
rush for 6 yards
LU TO
rush for 5 yards
rush for 1 yard
LU TO
punt with 15 seconds left
UNI didn't try to score at all after that FG. Just end the game as fast as possible

My bad, missed that one, technically yes!
But who is the Aggies best win? I'd say Idaho St. They fed off the average to bad teams in the Big Sky. They lost Big at EWU, which happens.
This is an interesting matchup. UCD, good record, no big wins vs Bipolar UNI. I wouldn't place a bet on either team in this game!

UNI had two backs run for over 100 yards. What they couldn't or wouldn't do is throw the ball. UNI's play calling against Lamar was ultra conservative.
Who knows with UNI? I wouldn't discount them in this game but I also wouldn't be surprised if they laid an egg.

That's the new standard for MVFC teams vs the Southland? You scored 16 ****** points. If there was a dominant push at all they would have blown them out like previous playoff matchups between these conferences. Heard all about them the last 4-5 years.

Lamar averages 3.4 YPC and that includes a 26 yard broken defense run. It was 2.8 you outside of that.
UNI had 5 sacks, 7 TFL, and about 15 pressures.
Lamar had 1 sack, 2 tfl, and only pressured I about 3 other times.
I'd say UNI did just fine up front
Now it's fair to say the passing game needs to find a click this week. Not drop 7 or 8 passes, including TDs. I wouldn't say it's fair to say uni gets no push

If you want to talk points, that's fine. UNI had a TD called back on a horrific OPI call and a other TD pass that was dropped. UNI ran 13 plays in the 4th quarter, 11 of them were runs, 1 was a dropped pass. UNI killed 10 minutes of clock in the 4th with the run game. That's all they tried to do.
All without having an OC for the week

Lamar really generated very little offense after the 1st qtr and most of that was done by their QB after plays had broken down.
I was waiting for UNI to break the game open in the 2nd half but it never materialized. Dropped passes and conservative play calling kept it close. Too close for comfort if I was a Panther fan. Definitely going to need more production out of the passing game this week.

100%. We were all convinced UNI was going to lose because of the typical Farley play not to lose and not play to win mentality
They had 150 yards of offense in the first 7 minutes...had 200 for the first half. Their offense was entirely play action, QB runs for his life for 5 seconds and chucks the ball up and hope 5 seconds was enough for a WR to find a hole in a coverage.
Eli had 13 incompletions Saturday. 7 or 8 of them were drops. That'll kill your passing yard number real...real..fast. It will also kill drives/points real fast. Even if there is zero YAC. Part of it was drops, and part of it was just Eli was just a bit off. As I've said we had WR's having to make full stretch catches on the sideline and toe tap or guys running full speed and diving to pull the ball off the turf. That's very unlike Eli. He had a ton of time too, so something was just off somewhere - once again I'll point to the OC being out all week due to a death in the family - and UNI going super extra conservative by even UNI standards.
That needs to get correct for UNI to have a chance this weekend.
If Davis wants to use a bunch of 5 or 7 step drops I like our defenses chances. It sounds like their QB isn't quit like the Lamar guy at moving. Ricky and Elerson could have a good day.

I think weather as a factor is being overblown. Davis has a collection of talented rushers this year which has done a lot to balance the attack. If it becomes a grind it out game they've also shown that they can stop a strong run game when it's the focus. Just not excellent at stopping a balanced offense

Hey, you started a thread with a question of how to add a poll so wondering why none on this one yet? I assumed this was the genesis on the other thread on this matter. Please add a poll.

UNI is so bipolar it's extremely hard to pick their games. You just never know which team will show up. I mean look at their fans on here they won't even acknowledge their fandom and some even try to cling on to other teams as a disguise. It's kind of sad.xlolx

I think that bipolarity (is that a word?) is due a lot to where they're playing at. At home they're 5-1 with an average margin of +14 points per game. On the road they're 2-4 with an average margin of -3.5 points per game (-17 ppg in their 4 losses).
I'm not liking their chances on the road out west.

That was a much better team than this year's version of UNI by my estimation. That team gave NDSU their toughest test of the 2015 playoffs while playing on the road for the 2nd straight week. This year's UNI team doesn't have the defense or anywhere near the running game that the 2015 team had although they might throw the ball a bit better with Dunne. But UNI isn't going to beat UC Davis by throwing it all over the place.

So...I watched Davis tape today...then looked at their schedule
Davis's Big Sky schedule
Idaho: Finished 9th in the Big Sky. Didn't beat a team in the top 8 of the Big Sky
NoCo: Finished 11th in the Big Sky. Wins were 8th place NAU and 12th place SUU
Idaho St: Finished 5th in the Big Sky. 5-5 against D1...only wins were bottom 3rd of the Big Sky
Poly: Finished 7th in the Big Sky. Only beat the bottom of the conference
NAU: Finished 10th in the Big Sky
EWU: Got embarrassed
Sac State: Finished last in the Big Sky...Winless...was SUU's only win of the season
I'm not counting San Diego as anyone worth bragging about. It's a non scholarship team.
Sure they have an FBS win but it was SJSU and they were 1-11
Their best win was...Idaho State or a PFL team.
They played 2 good teams and were blown apart both times.
It's still a road game for UNI...but....I mean...

Massey:
UNI: 123
UCD: 144
Massey's average has over 20 spots different in the two in opponent average...and that's with UNI playing Hampton who was 351
Let's check Pugh
UNI: 151
UCD: 164
Sagarin SOS
UNI: 128 (#1 in the FCS)
UCD: 158 (22nd)
I ran UNI through UCD's schedule on a simulator (not perfect I get). Also came out at 9-2.

I don't necessarily disagree but when looking at the computers it is usually best to look at the ratings and not the rankings. There could a large number of teams clumped together separated by tenths of ratings points which would skew the ranking.
Massey has UNI SOS at 44.25 and UCD SOS at 41.34. Not a huge difference. When looking at their FCS SOS rankings they had the #3 and #11 most difficult.

I guess the question is should SOS count when the strong teams on your schedule blew you TF out?
If JSU goes next year for our 12 game year and picks up UGA, tOSU, Alabama, and Clemson should we get a boost for our schedule even when we got absolutely killed in all of them? But hey, we played a tough schedule.
I say that with regards to both teams but when you have teams like Stanford and Iowa on your schedule and you get absolutely killed by them, why should that be a mark in your favor?

So let me get this straight
UCD plays 1 team that finished top 5 in the Big Sky - gets destroyed - and beats the bottom half of the conference is the same as UNI playing
So lets get this straight
Idaho is equal to USD
Northern Coloardo is equal to Missouri State
Idaho State = Western Illinois
Cal Poly = Youngstown State
Montana = South Dakota State
Northern Arizona = Youngstown State
Sacramento State = Indiana State
Eastern Washington = North Dakota State
Got it.

Not sure you can call UNIs Iowa game or UCDs game with Stanford blowouts. I usually reserve the term blowouts for 4-5 score games.
Ok, then any bonus someone gets for blowing out the lowliest team on their schedule also gets taken out of their computer rating, right? A teams schedule is a team's schedule. And somewhat tongue in cheek, should we take out SEMO from JSUs SOS because they lost by a bunch to them?

Either team could have named the score. Everyone knew going in that they could name the score.
SOS is a finicky stat because a lot of people use it to show how good or bad a team may be, yet the stat itself is no indication of how good the team is.
SOS by itself means exactly nothing. You have to also consider how that team performed against their schedule.

Intersting stat:
UNI threw for 107 against Lamar.
UNI threw for 362 against NDSU.
The Panthers offensive was very conservative against Lamar. I agree if they play like that they will be in trouble. If they play like they did against SDSU and NDSU they have a great chance for a road win.
The best win for either of these teams is UNI's win over the Jackrabbits.

You had 120 yards in the first half, and just 39 going into the final drive of the half.

The part where we had two interceptions in the first half and it was 10-3 until 3:25 to go in the half. Overall the game was a fairly strong showing by our defense against a PAC 12 opponent, but yes, the offense could not convert on those turnovers, or what were solid drives in the 2nd half (we out-gained them in the second).

Winner of this game could be hosting next week.
Nicholls St was looking to go into halftime up 14-3 or possibly 17-3 over #3 EWU, but the FGA was blocked, with an EWU player somewhat picking up the ball, flipping it forward toward another teammate who was able to pick it up and run it to the house.
Halftime score ends up 14-10

in that situation, it would depend on which team bid (or had the higher bid) to host the quarterfinal round.
if neither team submitted a bid, I believe both schools would be offered a chance to bid.
In any case, since neither team would be seeded in that situation, the record/ranking doesn't matter as far as determining who hosts.

Easy there Herm :D
But yeah, Farley coaching like UNI going to get 6 more possessions this game...
January 1st. It's on David Harris, now.

Oh so you decided this is the ****ty UNI? All week I heard how the hero UNI played the Bison and Bunnies.
No...this is the UNI I know all to well.
The only MVFC teams I will pump up are NDSU and SDSU....everything else is mediocrity this year.

Congrats Ags, best of luck against EWU. Make some adjustments and it should be a fun game. Roos is tough as you well know.
Nice season UNI, tough loss tonight in California. See you next year.

EWU must be watching this game and licking their chops.
Honestly, I’d rather play UNI. Davis is a good team. Yes, we definitely got the better of them the first time we played but I don’t think we got their best game that day.

Does the game clock always start after a false start penalty?
UNI had 2nd and 5, and threw an incomplete pass, stopping the clock at something like 2:20.
Then they line up for the next play, and a false start is called, but the clock operator had started the clock and ran some time off, even though there hadn''t been an actual play due to the false start.
After assessing the penalty, the game clock was started, and UNI ended up having to burn their final timeout.
But since the clock was stopped due to the incomplete pass on the play prior to the false start, why was the clock running?

Just got back from Davis. That was a dog fight. UNI is tough as nails. Those are some BIG boys.
Davis battled adversity all night on offense. To my eye, this was the biggest and toughest D-line they've played all year. Maier was pressured all night.
Playoff football is awesome.

Just got home from the game. What a nailbiter. Great game. Playoff football is the best. Need to button up the RZ offense - can't leave that many points on the board against a team like Eastern.
I have a feeling that it will be much more of game on Saturday as compared to the earlier UCD-EWU matchup....

Davis tried to out Farley us, but failed. Game should have been over in the 3rd quarter. I enjoyed watching the Aggies and would love to see them win in Cheney, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Was impressed with the UNI QB, made some big plays on 3rd down. A couple of NFL Window throws into tight coverage. UNI fought very hard and came up with some huge plays on the road.
Aggies had to earn every inch - and the UNI red zone defense was phenomenal.

But yeah, Farley coaching like UNI going to get 6 more possessions this game...He plays not to lose. He has never once. Never. Coached to win. Never.
He will punt from the plus 31 on 4th and three quarters of an inch.

As I assumed would happen
Defense would do more than enough to give the offense the chance to win
Farley would make damn sure the offense would force the defense to have to win it
Nice win Davis

Sent from my Pixel 3 using TapatalkYou're correct he almost always plays it conservative but to be fair he did go for it on 4th down a couple of times against NDSU this year.
